Really? No custom Spellmaking?

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 12:08 pm

the custom spellmaking was one of my favorite parts about being a mage. In Oblivion the spells you made could potential be the most powerful in the game. Also making unique and varied spells was awesome. Like adding paralzye for 1 second on a destruction spell to add knockdown, adding soul trao for 1 second for soul stealing destruction, paralysis+destruction spells, etc.

Why do away with it?

No custom spell making. Todd howard said they were sorry to let it go but couldn't keep the graphics on the consoles with the variables that introduced. So, for graphics you lost it.
Don't mourn alone though- there's many other features gone as well, so you are not alone. You have company.

Maybe if enough people mourn together Bethesda will try to bring some virtues back, but I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah I totally miss the "greater-elemental-fireball-with-soul-trap"

30 points of fire damage for 1 seconds,
20 points of frost damage for 2 seconds,
20 points of shock damag for 2 seconds,
3 Seconds soul trap,
Weakness to fire/frost/shock/magic 100% for 3 seconds.

Totally made me feel unique and mage-like.

This. There was a lot of shoehorning going on to fit it on the outdated console hardware. Hopefully you play this on the PC as mods will make it happen. (If they havn't already)

doing stuff like this made me feel like a REAL mage. Like I was actually studying the subject, getting better and stuff. I mean jzargo (spelling?) in winterhold has a quest where you test spells HE made... not fair.....

Pardon my bleeped out French but f*** graphics! I'd prefer spell-crafting.

I couldn't agree more. While I prefer TES series doesn't revert back to Daggerfall or Arena graphics, I play games for fun, not to just look at pretty graphics.

As long as spell-making actually allowed us to make new spells instead of forcing to make more powerful versions of spells we already have in order to survive at higher levels, I'd be all in for it.

However, if it means creating such a ridiculous mish-mash spell like my example, no thanks.

Unfortunately graphics sells games. So, while you and I and others care about gameplay primarily, that doesn't typically lend itself to marketing. A ReAlLy KeWl DrAgOn FiGhT DuZ thO!11! And Kill cams! ANd VoIcE Acting!!!!

The new system could have worked it they had taken it all the way, to something like Spell Combinations. But... instead we were left with a half done system that was rather bland.

Either we do need to go back to Spellcasting (As is said by Gorbad PS3, severely rebalanced), or go forward to something new and better.

Totally. A lot of companies seem to be focusing on the superficial rather than on actual gameplay, which is a shame. Then again I do play on 360 so I guess I don't see the wide range of games out there.

I really wish you were wrong, but I know you're right. All style, no substance. The Call of Duty generation has spoken.

You really shouldn't be able to adjust magnitude of Spells. Spell magnitude should only be affected by itemization and Perk point investment. You should be able to combine spell effects, as a rule their magnitude should be lower than a pure spell. For example, if I have a spell that has Fear + Fire, the Fire and Fear effects should be less than casting either Fear or Fire, or Fear and Fire. The draw should be I have created a spell that does both, not replaces the Base spells. Also, having the possibility of creating entirely NEW spells such as Absorb + Shock might be a Magicka Leech. Depending if you combined it with a single target or AE spell would dictate how that Magicka Leech spell behaves.

Does anyone else find it amusing that people vilify Casual Gamers, like they are some sort of plague predicted by the ancient ones, brought fourth by the hubris of man, to bring about the downfall of society...

When in fact they are like... your mom.

I remember playing Ultima III on an Apple 2E. Nobody cared at all how it looked. It was one of, if not, THE most immersive RPG's ever made. Ahh, Lord British!

Ultima III came out in 1983... It was pretty caught up with the times back then. Skyrim isn't optimized for the latest generation everything, or it wasn't as much prior to the PC HD patch.

They designed the game the way they did on purpose. You may not agree with it, but I don't think they sacrificed a lot of time to prettify everything, vs. the thousands of other things they did. *Shrug*

And okay... thats one person who doesn't. Most do

Haha, yeah. I don't typically like the terms but I get other peoples' frustration at how the industry *seems* to be going.

OK, I have deleted a number of posts, particularly those referring to child harm as it is a topic that is not permitted on these forums.

Stay on the thread topic please or you will see me again. Thanks.

No custom spellmaking is dumb, you'd think with the advancements that Skyrim made with the magic that they would have this feature in but no they had to focus on other shallow crap like Marriage. I'm hopeful that DLC will add it in after modders put it back in their games but I'm not optimistic.

Hopefully a lot of things with be back in the next TES game. By then the next generation consoles should be out and should be powerful enough to have open cities, levitation, spell making, and other things now sadly gone.

Don't miss it. It felt really bland to me and didn't really contribute to my gameplay. If they bring it back in an improved version I would be happy to see this feature return.

There's talk of Spell-Combos (see GameJam) which to me seem quite interesting. I never really got into Mages until Skyrim though so have no idea on what I am missing!?!?
