Longknife, Hi!

I do have to agree. Voice acting is terribly disapointing in Skyrim. As you point out, the inconsistency is on par with amateur work. Of course, there are a few exceptional performances, such as Ulfric's, which is quite simply superb, but the ensemble is a disconnected patchwork.

New Vegas, and even Fallout 3 only have a Fraction of the NPC cast though. It's really unfair to hold Skyrim to the same exacting standard as an expectation. It's like expecting addition to be as painless as calculus (inb4 physicists).

The really big failure of Skyrim VA is the guards. If they would really just cut all non-essential dialog with Guards, and keep a generic greeting pool for the some of the Guards, I think the majority of Skyrim's Dialog assignment issues would be resolved.

I challenge you to name a game that offers you the freedom to be who you want and do what you want while playing how you want and still progressing your character and leveling up? Don't name previous TES games or fallout because they fall under the same family...i mean games that bethesda isn't involved in since your so against them and their creation
Just because no other game supposedly does it (and I could name some that do, albeit very old titles, like Darklands or Wasteland) doesn't mean Bethesda can't do better than what they have been doing for over a decade now. And they have a lot of room for improvement.

But Skyrim, when you think about it, is simply filled with too many characters that don't serve any purpose. Take all those guys in the Thieves Guild, like Cynric, Vipir, and Thrynn...they'll each tell you about themselves and give you their life story, and then...well, that's it. They don't do anything else but make the Guild look like it's populated. Did we really need to have all those lines of dialogue recorded for a bunch of worthless background characters, when more important chaps like Brynjolf or Mercer, or hell, maybe Tullius and Ulfric, could have been given more lines to flesh them out? That's pretty much all that NV did; it gave the important characters with the more prominent voice actors (like House, Caesar, and all the companions, to name a few) the bulk of dialogue.

Hell, I've complained a lot about shallowness, which I think is particularly evident in the quests, guilds, and overall storytelling. Can't comment on books, as I'm not an avid in-game reader. When you say "something was inhibiting their (devs) muscle flexing", what do you mean?

When they Made arena, its original concept was you being apart of a team going across the continent fighting other Teams in Arenas.

Then it became a conspiracy, with a unkown agent being guided by a spirit to uncover a ploy of Jagar tharn who sent Daedric assassins to end him. across the continent they stride diving the deepest darkest most dangerous dungeons. coming to end in a climatic battle involving fire pits, teleportation and what would be one of the most powerful artifacts in Tamriel

-- of course its not nearly as epic as it sounds but it beats their original concept imo--

then from nothing Came Daggerfall, and with their brainstorming erected politicks interplay, factions rivalry and one of the most indepth rpgs of its time conceptually (to me) as the game was buggy as hell lol but AMBITIOUS AND DOESN'T FRAID OF ANYTHING.

Then FROM ONE LINE in the pocket guide of the Empire Morrowind that had NO references, NO guides and NO examples of its existence prior to the Games appearance, they birth one of the more lauded RPG's for its time as well and DID NOT SKIP OUT on the story juice EVEN though it was advancing in Graphicks and Lesser RPG mechanicks.

Then Comes oblivion, Its local that it takes place, HAS MORE DESCRIPTION than -ANY OTHER LOCATION- ever in TES in the pocketguides to le Empires AND IT CRUMBLES, WHY? next to nothing of the descriptions about Cyrodils people, the Imperial City, Factions, Society and Events come to life in the game, NEXT TO NONE, and it had more examples than any other province....and compounding on the fact that it having a described in stone setting to allow for a Story to bear Fruit, its story was one of the most lackluster ever presented in TES (IMO).

Then Comes Skyrim, Skyrim, written about in books aplenty, a society well documented and there for the AGES, is also lacking. why is this, the setting is there. a province up and about centuries before the empire, a province that stood tall during the Alyieds and Dwemer....a Province Steed in history enough to drown you 600 times over, CRUMPLES as well? WHY.

/Mah Opinion

I agree that beth can definitely do alot of things alot better but imo skyrim is still the best game out in its genre...it has its flaws but its still a work of art, just like a picasso painting has body parts in the wrong places but is still beautiful to many

Hello again.

Yes, I do have a problem with it. I have a problem with someone accusing devs he, presumably, does not know at all of being "creatively underdeveloped", especially because he does not need such accusations to prove his point. A lot of other factors could account for a creatively underdeveloped game besides creatively underdeveloped devs.
Oh Hi Press Z,

I think you are taking it way too seriously, he was just stating his opinion, and I think you are being a little harsh.

I agree. But in all honesty, I think many of the things are underdeveloped in Skyrim that needs work. The voice acting was good though. A person would have to be an utter fool to think otherwise.

I agree voice acting was good, in the sense that it was only what five people scatted around with alot of same actors for different characters, its the writing that makes the voice actors even bad sometimes :(

Lulz.
I also don't see what having more NPCs matters? We're talking about the quality of the voice acting, not the diversity of voice actors. The quality is lacking, and I don't see why more NPCs should equal bad voice acting. I mean on the other hand, Fallout New Vegas has more recorded dialog (less NPCs maybe (big maybe, I'm actually not sure how the comparison between FO3 and NV NPC count looks compared to Skyrim) but more dialog to record) and yet the quality of their voice actors is phenominal, and they use many of the exact same actors Skyrim does.

I liked the quality of some of the voice actors, especially the actress that did Aela and Legate.

And yet, despite this long rant, I don't care in the slightest. I don't notice these issues because I don't spend my time looking for flaws. I spend my time enjoying myself.

Let's look at the Greybeards. Delphine. Astrid. Cicero. Aela. Sapphire. Odahviing.

Let's look at the intricately detailed world. The journals, the placement of items to tell stories, the buckets in the corners, the embalming tools.

Let's look at the world. The huge archway that Solitude sits on, the upturned Viking ship of Jorrvaskr, the Skyforge, the word walls, the dungeons, the landscape, the mountains, the aurora.

See! I can do the same thing as you, except with the positive things. Next time, can I ask that you look at the game from a neutral perspective? I think you'll find quite a few things you like.

many people to reply too

Longknife- it inspired me

Someone who said skyrim was my first- Nup. i had a taste of morrowind, oblivion, More morrowind than before, skyrim, a go at daggerfal (which has great ideas that the other games should follow- but has horrible controls and ui that i dislike. )

Solitudal- there are plenty of things i like.. but there are things i don't like. People prefer to remember good than bad. This thread is a nice pointer at what they do wrong

Bigbosbalrog - criticism is a much better creator of improvement than the even more useless (and far less correct) "omg bethesda you so great for making a richly detailed game world"

First off, Skyrim is a truly massize game, with over 120 named NPCs that you can talk to, so naturally, all of these characters are not going to be developed to the level of a great novel character. If you look at games with greatly developed characters, they probably only possess about a dozen characters, that are followed throughout the entire game. In Skyrim, there are few characters like that. Cicero, Arengier, Mjoll, Esbern and such. These characters are notable because you are exposed to them throughout the game, if you choose to play that way. But lets look at the flip side, like characters such as Nazeem. How can you expect the writers to develop a character with one or two lines? What, do you want the next DLC to be the immersive developing story about how nazeem became the brown noser he is today? And then have them release 120 more dlcs for each and every other character with a name in the entire game? Maybe individually named guards also, with each having a unique voice and story that he, for some odd reason, is just going to pour out to you. I, for one, have never seen or played a game that in depth with that many characters.

I, like the rest of us, would have liked some additional depth, such as adding new dialouge and scenery after beating The Civil War, or maybe some effect on the game after beating the Main Quest, which was do-able, but wasnt added. But the extent of story telling some people are expecting would be par to A John Steinbeck novel or to a heavy rain game, which is silly and unrealistic. I mean, seriously, Bethesda spent 6 years developing this game. I don't think they cut corners intentionally. They produced the character development that they could with a game of this scale. Why would they dump dozens of hours into a character you will likely only meet once, and probably murder for his neat armor. It simply doesnt fit the profile of TES.

When you sum the game up, with all of it's cool features, its an outstanding game with so many features, and if it dissapoints you because you can't pick a gaurds brain for what color of hair he likes on his women, you should re-evaluate you expectations and get some help for your strange entitlement issues.

My theory is that Even though Bethesda studios isn't developing it, Zernimax might be considering that if the online TES is a success, that means that the series a whole ought to be as well. Sorry, I git a bad feeling about their motivations for making TES online
yeah but i doubt TESO will be that big a hit it looks like wow with a TES skin on it to me

if you don't get my point, then let me make it clear, Why did Beth do awesome with nothing, and do nothing with Awesome?

They stopped making game they wanted to, and started doing games the mass market wants?

Though one of my dark secrets is, that i quite like the simplistic approach Skyrim takes  Like how i kind of like Supreme Commander 2 better than the first. The first is better, no question, but the second is easier to approach, if you get my meaning.
