Is Skyrim an RPG?

Not necessairly. If and if being a huge word, they brought back atributes, Strength would determine damage. Training with a sword, is for getting more used to the weapon, hence you would be more acruate with it.

Training with a sword also allows you to learn how to use it better and how to maximize damage with it. Training with a weapon extends FAR beyond just accuracy.

the only things STR should be tied to is how much unarmed damage you do and how much you can carry.

So someone whoes as strong as the hulk, will do less damage on contact, then a homless guy who in his past life, was a master swordsman?

Yes It is. It's the only "real" RPG this year along with the Witcher. Dark souls is an amazing game aswell, but is more a Hack 'n' Slash with RPG elements, everyone might enjoy It, though.

Those saying Skyrim ain't an RPG are just butthurt, you might not like the game, but that Its genre. And It's really good, judging by most feedback, I myself loved It. It'll surely provide for [censored]loads of entertaining, between 120 and 400 hours, I'd say.

Skyrim is definitely an RPG. Looks like the trend is going in the direction of refusing the fact that RPGs have evolved over the years [some of you might feel that they have regressed to an inferior state instead] and some of them have simpler mechanics than what most RPG used to have. Does this really prevent you to enjoy the game as it is?

It doesnt matter how strong you are if you dont know how to hold a weapon or use it properly.

A master swordsman vs a guy 10 times physically strong then he is will win in a sword fight becuase he knows how to use the weapon better and optomize its damage output.

Also why are you bringing past liefs into this? So random

Few games can really live up to legends such as Planescape or Baldur′s Gate...but if he wants to wait for something that can match those titles he might have to wait for a very long time...until Mass Effect 3 is released Skyrim is the best new game you can get involved in if you want a rpg-game.

It's also a hack and slash [well ok, nowadays we're used to call them action-RPGs]. I fail to see how the H&S elements might prevent the game to be qualified as an RPG.

Compare Skyrim's and Dark Soul's degree of freedom and choices aside from those of the spreadsheet. If Skyrim is a hack and slash so is every TES game since Arena. Only Daggerfall had different endings and the only thing lost from other games in terms of RPG-ness is the spreadsheet (maybe the spellmaker), but you can still roleplay in several ways, and new cities and wilderness are surely way more beliavable than those of previous games due to random encounters, NPCs having schedules and working, talking between them about something different than mudcrabs, etc.

I've enjoyed every TES game until now (save for arena, battlespire and redguard, which I haven't played), and Skyrim ain't much different if you don't jump into the nostalgia trend.

I said the guy who was ten times stronger conntected. If your muscular, when you swing a sword, there will be more force in a swing. The dudes homeless, how else would he be a master swordsman?

I don't use nostalgia for judgements, I use gameplay. Sure, you have the illusion of choice in Skyrim, but in all actuality its between yes and no. Compared to Morrowind and Oblvion, Skyrim has no choices at all.

The reason why you would hit someone and it woulden't do anything in Morrowind, is because they either didn't put in a dodge mechanic for weren't able to put it in.

The reason why you would swing your sword in Morrowind and it would not give damage is your Weapon Skill was not high enough to land a hit. The visual of you swinging your weapon was just there for show.

Wasen't that part of the reason as well? Also, didn't fatigue come into play?

And which choices had Oblivion or Morrowind that Skyrim does not, out of curiosity?

In my opinion certainly it's not. The RPG elements are easily outnumbering the hack and slash elements.

Does anyone actually think the OP is going to come back and say "Thanx guyz, I decided I will buy this for my son because it is a real RPG" or "Thanx guyz, I decided I will not buy this for my son because it is not a real RPG, just a dumbed down action adventure game that should have repair hammers"? Just wondering.

All kinds of things came into Play, Fatigue, Skill, Luck, Agility and other factors all went into the equation, for both your character and the enemy. If the equation said you landed a hit, then you did. Then, the calculations on how much damage was done was performed and that is what determined how much the enemy was hit for.

And even though It's not the norm, we have more quests with meaningful choices in Skyrim than we did in Morrowind. In TES III I only recall two big things: choosing between the fighters and thieves guild and killing (or not) vivec.

Here you can decide about Paarthunax and Cicero's fate, choose sides in the civil war or in the Forsworn conspiracy, end one way or another Blood on the Ice, etc.
