They fixed all the crappy low res equipment.

This is kinda bogus. My xbox 360 copy looks like the one on the left. I'm looking at it right now.

Wasn't Doom 3 the first game that used this technique?

What technique?

wow 194 people are reading this topic. Anyway, the clothes are the most improved IMO. I dont pay attention to the terrain and i play with AA off, AF x8 on medium texture since i cant really notice the difference between high and medium. But 3gb.....wow my GPU is gonna blow ><

edit: i compared the HD res pack with Skyrim HD 2k/4k textures, IMO the Skyrim HD beats the HD res pack. Any1 noticed that too>?

thanks....But how light gets affected by this?
That is where the Normal part comes in, normals are what decide how specular a material is in model form. The maps take this data and use it to create specular data that the higher polygon models have and transfer it onto the lower models.
Lower res maps will have flatter surfaces through lower amounts of data and the loss of flat reflections seen in the upgrade are purely because these maps now have far superiour detail showing more scratches or holes etc.

Here is an example, my own work.
This first picture is the gun with no normal map. Look closely at the ivory handle, the texture is pretty flat, like the original Skyrim ones.
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v690/pinkypics/?action=view&current=ColtRender1.jpg

This picture shows the same gun with a normal map applied.
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v690/pinkypics/?action=view&current=ColtRender1-1.png

Although exaggerated by going from zero map to actually having a map, it is the same as having a poor one and going to an upgraded version.

What technique?
The "normal map derived from high-poly model pasted on low-poly model"-technique you described in post #89.

Steam Screenshots are compressed JPGs. Problem is the compression is so high that it makes things look worse than they are. It is best to use Print Screen, make a Bit Map, then convert that to a JPG at a lower compression setting (larger file size). I don't know if anyone has done that. The screens I have seen show improvement, but you do not really see the improvement until you look at the game as it is played on the PC.

See my post above. Are you grabbing these from Steam, or are you making a bit map, then converting to jpg?

Really?? My landscape texture mod seems to work fine even now with the hires textures...

Sorry, I should have been more specific.
Landscape texture mods work, but stuff like armor mods don't...I've not check everything so not sure what works and what doesn't...

CCNA, it is NOT jpeg compression that makes that picture blurry. Look at the sleeve on the right; you can see the aliasing. Very sharp image. It's the texture itself that's blurry alright!

Hell, even Oblivion never got an official HQ-texture pack, take a look at Oblivion's vanilla textures as comparison and you'll see what I mean!

Thanks again Bethesda!

Now the question is regarding upcoming DLC/Expansions. Will Bethesda release them with standard Skyrim graphics and then update them to HD, or will HD become mandatory?

Guys please wait up the texture pack and look at the whole not just A post in a town, it really is much better overall.

They're not as good as the texture mods, but noticeably better than vanilla IMO. Plus, on low/mid range PC's like mine, the performance is much, MUCH better than the mods. It's a nice compromise.

Yes, just like any other mod, you are going to have to work with Load Order and Archive Invalidation (if that is even needed/used on Skyrim Mods) to get the textures you want to load in the game. Any ESP sourced Texture Pack is pack is going to use the textures specified in the ESP over any other textures that are just thrown in Data Files. There may be another way to get loose texture files to load instead of specified ones in the esp, but I don't know how to do that.

That was taken with fraps converted to a jpeg with low compression.

This one is the same, no sharpen mod.

Because the modded textures are 2048x2048/4096x4096. Pretty sure the Bethesda's packs are 1024x1024. Modders textures will peg your VRAM as well if you use too many.
