Things that you can't suspend your disbelief over?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 3:12 am

One thing that I seriously couldn't suspend my disbelief over was the following:

I robbed Belethor's General Goods in Whiterun. I was 100% sure nobody saw me do it, I was hidden the entire time. Anyway, a while later I get attacked by assassins and after I killed them, I loot the contract from them which says Belethor hired them to kill me for robbing his shop.

I don't know how he knew this (since nobody saw me) but what made it worse was that when I went to confront Belethor about it, there was no dialogue option for "You sent assassins after me!? You jerk!" He just acted like his happy old self, didn't even try to attack me. This totally ruined the immersion for me. I thought I was going to see something dynamic and actually witness the Radiant Story working but nothing happened. Big let down.
Belathor's got a little Oblivion Imperial Guard in him.

Even if seeing you was impossible... HE KNOWS IT WAS YOU :{O~

Well that bit didn't bother me so much but not being able to confront him about it was total bs.

I wasn't gonna post in here. In general I love this game and it's super fun. When someone mentioned "apples" I had to speak up... Something that stands out for me to ruin emersion.....

"Here Dragon Born you must go into this dark cave dungeon that no one has entered in centuries , or ever returned to tell the tale, that.....somehow.... has neatly packed boxes...full of fresh ........market ready....produce.... hey wait a second..." lol

I can't suspend my disbelief over the lack of impetus to do anything.

OMG there are dragons HELP US DOVAHKIIN, whenever you feel like it.
OMG there is a dangerous artifact, HELP US DOVAHKIIN, whenever you feel like it.
OMG something SERIOUS IS GOING DOWN in the hold, HELP US DOVAHKIIN or just walk away from it and maybe come back to it a month later and we'll all wait for you.

I want the game to make me finish quests. I want there to be a chance of failure if I dawdle or simply behave like an idiot. I mean, chance of failure other than me dying. I shouldn't be allowed to faff around while dragons are rising with so little consequence. When the world is at stake, I should be driven to do SOMETHING, or lose my chance of saving the world. There's simply no sense of urgency in Skyrim outside of the self-imposed one.

But the world is static and nothing changes. It's almost like WoW, in a way, and that is BLOODY SAD. Even Guild Wars 2 promises a more dynamic environment than this. And that's a mumorpuger.

It's a cynical thing to say, but I'm a total cynic: Skyrim is almost realistic to our own world because nobody cares about our own problems, and when they are solved by someone, the solver(s) go thankless and it's back to apathy land.

Weeeee.... :[

Games like this do not intend to create a consistent, believable world (as a book or movie would). Yes there are dragons or spaceships, but within the plot, it all hangs together. They're trying to create a world that is fun to play in -- which means lots of adventure, easy to carry loot around, and so on.

Think about Lord of the Rings as it was portrayed in the 3 movies. Really, that is a pretty linear plot in which the number of actual decisions the player makes is relatively limited and much would be boring to experience. The actual "terror" part would be a relatively low number of hours, but the whole "realistic" experience would take a lot longer. Real terror experiences of the duration a RPG character experiences would probably reduce him to a basket case. And Middle Earth looks pretty peaceful when Sauron isn't trying to kill everyone. Didn't you wonder where Aragorn was honing his skills? Who was he fighting? I guess I'm saying that a more believable "plot" and world would probably be a much shorter game and not as much fun. Heck can you imagine what it must be life for Bethesda to write a plot which will be acted out by actors you will never see who will do what they want instead of following the script? It's amazing it's as believable as it is really.

Eventually we may have virtual experiences which are totally realistic (and much shorter). See the book Dream Park for an example. But even a short burst of REALLY walking around Skyrim would be ... really tiring I suspect.

- Every NPC has amnesia. By far, the worst aspect of this game. Flip a bit. I don't want to hear you say that for another 30 days, at least.

-It's not only that they greet you like they've just met you, even 20 seconds later ...I'm actually furious about the 'broken record' NPCs. For the first 50 levels of my first character, I used the blacksmith out front of Warmaiden's and enchanter table in Dragonsreach. Did no play tester actually try such an "unusual thing that they can't test everything thing people do". Because that lady will say the same 3 things to you every few seconds, as long as you are near. YOU WILL want to kill her. In real life, even.

- People start telling you stories as you are running past. You can still hear them going on about something when you are 1/2 mile away. Wow, break the ice first. How about 'HELLO'. Can't NPCs just say HI?

Other than that, this is just the best game.

Seems that way. And to maintain our own sanity, we must have selective amnesia of them in a hopeless attempt to unhear them.

But we never will, will we? :[

There's a strange dichotomy to Skyrim. On one hand, the world revolves around you. Everyone puts their lives on hold and nothing happens in the world until you want it to. Yet at the same time, nothing you do really matters. So it's as if the whole world ignores you.

I just sprint trough towns now, so the only thing i hear are "huh?", "what the?", "watch it!" :hehe:

Where are the pheasants?

That i have wondered myself too. Propably in the same place where iguanas and squirrels are in Fallout when they are not roasted in sticks :hehe:

I honestly thought that they'd go a route similarly to radiation in Fallout 3 by making so the cold could affect you in Skyrim. Would it have been more immersive or more annoying...? I don't know.

But you'd think that if they have enemies named after frostbite (the spiders), frostbite would be an actual issue in that region. There isn't even a single 'shivering' or 'see your breath' animation. People in Skyrim must bathe in horker blubber or something :{o~

Leveling up every half hour and all the stats. Most peomple coplain that there are fewer and fewer numbers each TES game, but I'd like to see everything disappear behind the scenes.

I can carry around 10 Mammoth tusks. No seriously I can. (Items need some kind of encumberance factor)

I can slay a dragon without much problem at all, then get owned by the first saber cat I walk by. (dragon battles need to be much more difficult and epic)

NPC's I injure (like bandits) will forget I'm there if I just stand still long enough. (Once injured an NPC should NEVER lose their high alert status)

Weightless gold coins. (Maybe I couldn't run around with 75K gold coins if they actually weighed something)

Final Boss battle. (Most pathetic boss I have ever seen.)

-That every shopowner and local peasant locks their house at night, but I can walk straight into a palace and into the Jarl's bedroom at night without no one asking any questions or trying to stop me (even visiting Ulfric Stormcloak in his sleep while wearing an imperial armor).
same for me. It takes a little off the fantasy world for me. Getting into places such as the Jarls residence should be difficult.
Getting into his personal quarters should be at the very least taxing.

In Oblivion it was illegal to go into the private parts of palaces. The public parts was public, Kitchen and other utility parts was usual legal but bedrooms for the lord and the higher level advisors was off limit.

Well, for starters it's a game. If you think of it more than a game you have some serious problems.
That's pretty much the way I look at it. I'm a little more forgiving with video games as far as suspension of disbelief goes than I am for books and movies, simply because I understand that there are some compromises that have to be made in a game in order to facilitate game-play, such as the bottomless back-pack and technical limitations such as NPC population levels. If you were to strive for as much realism as you might for a book or movie, the game would end up as more of a simulation than a game, to the point where it's become perhaps more realistic, but much more tedious and a chore and not fun at all. Verisimiltude is fine, absolute slavishness to realism is boring. I have more fun playing games if I don't get real persnickety about realism.

This is actually a key feature in all Bethesda games. They purposefully make it so that you can always (almost always, anyway) do whatever you want, whenever you want.

It wouldn't be Bethesda otherwise.

Sure it can be immersion breaking, but it's not something that going to change in TES- ever.
