Things that you can't suspend your disbelief over?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 5:19 am

For me it would have to be the built enviornment.

I can't suspend my disbelief over the size of the towns and cities. They're just too small. I understand the whole world is scaled, but there is such a thing as scaling too much.

The other thing is the discrepancy between the insides and outsides of many of the buildings. It's like they're completely unrelated.

That is very true, but they still have a long way to go.
Game industry have an immensely long way to go before games actually become aweeesome.

i cannot believe that the game has different voice actors saying the exact same thing.
Its like voice acting has become cheaper than script writing or something.

Tbh there's no need to spend extra for additional scripting. A simple solution would be to allow the voice actors to ad lib their lines a bit. Then again, I suspect that might cause issues with lipsyncing dialogue to facial animations.

I think the main thing that breaks my willing sense of disbelief is loading screens, no matter how brief or pretty. It'd be much better if open world games cached nearby building/cave interiors where memory permits, so that players never see loading screens at all.

You're missing the point.

It's not the fantasy elements, since we're playing a fantasy game, it's lack of certain basic rules and interactions that annoy most.

For me, it was the floating in mid-air and counter-clockwise rotating Imperial Noble on horseback. This happened to me after installing the old 1.1 patch.

Another one was watching a Frost Troll fall through the ground.

Oh, and exiting and re-entering the world space just to see arrows pointed straight up 90 degrees in the ground and floating weapons along the roadside.

I've got two, but I'm sure if I thought for a while there would be a lot more:

- I can fit my entire inventory into a tiny box or sack, including huge bulky armor and weapons.

- In a time of CIVIL WAR, there is NO market active for people who want others to improve or enchant their weapons or armor.

What are some of yours?

If those two things get to you, how do you handle other unbelievable things like dragons, mer, magic, and giants?

The only thing that gets to me and it's not really a biggie, nor does it actually get to me if I'm being honest, but in keeping with the thread - the lack of material on a lot of armours. Hide, steel, most furs etc would result in hypothermia and a quick death if people wore [censored] like that in those conditions.

That's why i tend to keep 3 outfits on my toon at all times. One for conditions described above, another for the warmer areas and another one (usually hooded robes) for when i'm visiting cities and towns.

Half the popluation of Skyrim being immortal kind of ruins it for me. How am I supposed to clear out those camps when all the commanders are immortal?

This is one of the biggest annoyances i have with Skyrim.

They don't even have to be hard and fast rules.

Take for instance that in the Star Wars movies, there is sound in space battles. They had to continue to put sound effects in for space battles once they started because Lucas decided that in his world there was sound in space. Now, missing sound effects in space in the following Star Wars movies would suddenly break this "suspension of disbelief".

It is less about rules and more about being consistant with your themes. :)

Glass is supposedly a raw form of ebony. Though it's difficult to tell anymore with this Malachite [censored]. But, I suppose it makes a pretty big splash when a god's heart hits the ground, and Skyrim is pretty near to (the now-ex) Vvardenfell geographically. So it doesn't seem that weird that you can find at least ebony in Skyrim.
So in theory, could you make light Daedric armor by trapping a daedras soul to Glass Armour?

I have trouble believing that no one suggests making Ulfric High King and the Dovahkiin Emperor. Especially after the DB quests.

I have to agree with a few that have been mentioned... the crazy container capacity (although maybe they found a way to duplicate Hermione's ever-expanding bag :teehee: ), immortal NPCs, etc...
Mine, it has to be the main quest's climix, namely...

Spoiler
Sovngarde. No one living should be able to get there, PERIOD. Add to that the fact that this is specifically a Nord belief, it made me do a :unsure2:, since I traditionally play a Breton who doesn't believe in the afterlife. Yet... Tsun says my character will be welcomed back when he dies! Say what?!

I think the better way to do this would be to have the story end after the battle with Alduin. The dragonborn has to DIE to get to the afterlife, like everyone else, no dodgy magic. From there, we get an epilogue of sorts, recapping the player's deeds, both good and bad, similar to Fallout: New Vegas.

Now of course, I do understand it's a game, and just let it slide... this is supposed to be fun, after all. So that's what I do. Just let it go, and take it as it is: entertainment.

That for every decent normal hard-working civilian there are 10 bandits, 5 necromancers, 3 forsworn and 1 dragon...dang it′s hard to make a honest living in Skyrim these days...

Yep. This might be my biggest problem with the game. Not like I want to run around the map and kill everyone I meet, it's just that they've given plot-armor to people who have no reason to have it. And it never gets removed, even if they aren't needed for a quest anymore...

So in theory, could you make light Daedric armor by trapping a daedras soul to Glass Armour?

Sounds plausible. Unless ebony is somehow closer to divinity, so it's easier to imbue with daedric souls. Couldn't say for sure, of course.

Where are the apple trees? Heck, you'd need a few full-blown orchards to supply the volume of apples found in the game.

How is it that the Draugr are always packing a few recently minted gold Septims? For a race cursed to walk ancient, long-lost tombs as undead Nord zombies and mummies they all seem to be set with modern coin.

Apples... I'd give the 'imported from other regions' theory, but we are never shown importing ships or even docks for importing stuff. Well, there are SOME docks... I guess it could work :{o~

I always assumed that the gold you find on draugrs was just some money they had on their person whenever they originally died or were embalmed? Hah, or maybe they need the money to save up for the nice ebony weapons they have.

I never thought to look at the age differences of coins, though. That would be neat if you could find 'ancient nordic coins' that were worth a bit more than modern coins. Or at least worth something to a collector of such things who would pay you for the ones you find.

-The horrible NPC's.

Basically in order to succesfully roleplay I have to avoid settlements.

'Do you go to the cloud district very often, what am I saying..'
'I work with my mother at the vegetable stall, its hard work..'
'I dont claim to be the best blacksmith in Skyrim..'

Argh shutup-shutup-shutup!

oh god, I want to stab the guy who asks about the cloud district, or the other who keeps asking if I've considered mercenary work.
