This Is NOT An RPG

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 3:17 am

I can raise skills, levels, and progress to higher tiers of weaponry to fight increasingly difficult enemies, while running quests for powerful loot and money, so I can improve my character to do more quests that hold more challenge. Depending on my playstyle, I can be a master swordsman or mage, given time. Likewise, the race I choose affects my abilities and stats. Furthermore, the quests that I mentioned generally send me into dungeons, fighting enemies in an individual cell filled with loot better than what's found outside.

This is an RPG, probably moreso than it's predecessors. Just because they removed a few features, and steamlined it, doesn't change the genre it obviously fits into. They also added MANY features that are staples of the RPG genre (more non-scaling loot, meaningful crafting, marriage, more followers, etc.)

Try harder next time. Or don't try at all. Either way works for me.

100% correct.

Too many people complaining and crying about how horrible the series has become as how skyrim is such a failure of an RPG...

Yet you still post on the forums.

Leave the community if it tears you up that much.

Message boards are meant to give a game a sense of community and allowe others to share information and the like in order to further enrich the experience.

If I graded this game purely on the forum community you'd think this game was an equivalent to the runescape beta.

You make no sense. Message boards are set up for a reason. YES for a sense of community but for COMMUNICATION as well. This is where problems are reported and fans can put their opinions. If you cant see the reason why the OP is "miffed" its because you lack any sort of experience or intelligence. Things change, yeah, but some changes arent always for the better. mistakes are made and hopefully fixed. Its not like every decision betehesda makes is rock solid the perfect solution. But it seems like the majority here are OK with the current state of skyrim and its sad you cant see some of the things (NOT ALL) that arent right

And people are obviously missing your point here. They are taking you literally, about your statement about it not being an rpg. It just shows how intelligent the people posting here are( xbox on a table bullshiit? come on people)

Wow, you may be onto something. Someone says "this is not an RPG" and people reply to the concept "this is not an RPG" - how stupid people can be. It's like when I say it is sunny outside people miss the point I am making about politics in the horn of Africa, clearly they are the fools!

RPG or not, Skyrim continues the Bethesda tradition of mindless hack & slay play. This time around it looks even prettier and we've got an added combat element in the shouts presumably because there wasn't enough focus on combat before,.

How original and new this thread is.

Complain somewhere else since these arguments have been done to death. IGN would probably be the place for you.

I usually do not like to be rude but these get old fast.

While I disagree with the OP, he certainly has the right to voice his opinion around here.
Unless, of course, I'm misinformed and this board has turned into a private club where certain opinions are not allowed.
Did you pay a membership fee that allows you to voice your opinion under the self-awarded and confessed right to be rude while the rank and file has to bottle it up?
Didn't think so.

I had a similar feeling as I played this game. The automatic perks should have stayed in place while presenting us optional skill improvements too.

This doesn't preclude the game being an RPG though.

Thats not what the OP or I am getting at. The game is obviously an RPG. He knows that, I know that, and everyone else knows that

Action game cop out at its finest. GUTTED so much from Daggerfall and onward.

Go back to the drawing board next time and stop gutting features and dumbing down.

Very sad.
I choose to play the game taking on the role of a Nordic warrior who is Dragonborn, and spends his time farming and hunting. Hmmm, role? Role-playing-game. And what? I'm not railroaded into one playstyle? I can actually choose what role I want to play? Weird...

Seems like an RPG to me.

If I didn't say anything, how did I take your comment out of context?

Also, you didn't mean that people who are happy with the game are not smart?

Why not just critisize what ya don't like about the game, and elaborate on what you feel would improve the experience, all the while keeping in mind there's a good reason these games are left open to modding.

The OP doesn't accomplish anything with this thread. This is a waste of everyone's time.

I don't think people should be so critical of something without giving examples and supporting arguments. This is lazy, and wasteful debate.

I'm sorry, Skyrim is a RPG. This is a fact. If you don't like Skyrim, then I don't know what to say to that. Play Daggerfall? Play another RPG?

I can agree. It feels more like a way of life than a "game." So maybe we need an alternative for the "G?"

Of course It's not. Aplogists don't understand what RPGs are about:
Make up your mind, RPGs are not about role-playing, they're about spread[censored]s!
Incult morons...

False premise is false. You seem to believe RPGs should be stat based, and that would make the game less "dumbed down". But "stats" are actually a simplified mathematical approach to determine an outcome by reducing complexity to simple percentages. Imho, the most intelligent way to determine an outcome is to create a beautifully complex engine and then let "player skill" determine the outcome. Skyrim is the TES game that has come the closest to this ideal.
Stats are required to distinguish between different characters. An RPG is all about what you can't do, and that informs what you can. Without inabilities (which is what you get when it all boils down to player skill), there is no character distinction and it is not an RPG.

Of course! By saying "This is NOT an RPG" you must mean something else!!

I think OP said what he ment to say, not too many ways to read into it.

It's probably the most sold single-player RPG ever. They may take feedback, but they won't lay down and cry, you can rest assured.

Skyrim is an RPG. It's just not a very good one.

Yes, you can "go do anything" right from the start, but let's take a tally of how many quests can only be completed one way or people/factions that cannot be killed and then take a stab at defining "anything". I don't think it will take long to recognize that "anything" means "you have a selection quest lines that almost entirely ignore each other, or you can steal stuff and/or kill any non-essential NPC you want". The nature of the beast is that all that we can hope for is the illusion of choice. In world of finite resources, I get that. But some devs are better at finessing that illusion than others, and I cannot think of a single example of where Bethesda didn't drop the ball in Skyrim.

Fun game. Can't wait to get home and play some more. But I'll do so knowing that it really could've been a lot better and is receiving accolades that other shops probably deserve more.
