what weapons should be in fallout: new vegas

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 11:54 pm

Er, no. The in-game decription in FO2 is "This rifle has been more widely used by armed forces than any other rifle in history. It's a reliable assault weapon for any terrain or tactical situation." The one you quoted does not appear anywhere in-game.

It's not called that but something else, though, and is not 100% identical.

The FN FAL in FO3, is named the Assault Rifle. Just like how the "AK-47" is called the Chinese Assault Rifle. The FN FAL in FO3, just doesn't have the handle like the other FAL's have had. They are the same gun. There are plenty of examples of FN FAL's without the handle.

An in-game terminal calls it the R91, not the FN FAL:

The R Series of combat assault rifles was used reliably following the discontinuation of the M series in the early 21st century. The R series, produced by civilian manufacturer Stent Security Solutions, was made in many models and variations. The variation most common to the DC Wasteland is the R91 full-auto urban assault rifle.

This rifle was issued in the United States Armed Forces during the urban pacification operations and combat. Fortunately for our purposes, the National Guard had been fully deployed around the DC area during the time of the war. As a result, the R91 is readily available for those willing to search. Although nearly two centuries of scavenging has reduced the numbers of working units, the R91 remains a favorite of Slavers, Raiders and Mercenaries. This rifle can often be obtained from legitimate traders and arms dealers.

Like any firearm, the R91's effectiveness and accuracy can suffer without regular maintenance.

Maybe just the outer appearance is similar to FN FAL but it has major differences anyway.

Weapons mounted on vehicles.... fast moving vehicles, slow moving vehicles, armored vehicles, flying vehicles.... and any other vehicle they think of.

That's the gun's designation in the game. Not the actual real world designation of it.

Thing is, even if weapons like FN FAL or M14 existed in the Fallout world, wouldn't they be far too old to still be in use after all these years? It's as if we were to revert to using American Civil War-era weapons after the apocalypse.

If you got "really for real" realistic about what would happen to everything, virtually nothing would work. No old ammo would fire (well). All batteries would be long drained and dead. All rubber would have turned into dessicated little chunks (this would be very bad for a lot of machine that rely on rubber for bushings, etc.). That said, a well-maintained firearm can last an incredibly long time.

I'm speaking from the Fallout canon standpoint, not the real-world standpoint here. Fallout 2 has an FN FAL named as such, Fallout 3 has a similar weapon named R91. So both exist within the Fallout world. This means that R91 must be different in some way even if its outward appearance is very similar.

I like the idea of picking your own attachments. If nothing else, some more silenced weapons so I can be more of a sneak.

Hopefully the "schematic" based weapons of Fallout 3 are not included. Those were just rather childish and pointless, and added little value to the game.

Fallout's timeline split from ours in the 1940s, so weapons like M4s and Desert Eagles never existed.

Yeah but in Fallout 2 they had the Desert Eagle, FN FAL, P-90, and Miniguns all of which were invented after the 1950's. As long as it fits the universe then it's fine by me. Fallout was never meant to be historically accurate.

It's not an FN FAL it's a HK G3 variant, or more precisely the Mexican CETME assault rifle.

See a resemblance?

Anyways if everyone wants to get all picky about what a modern gun is, or keep saying that a timeline split just stops weapon manufacturing altogether, then why can't the game include the M60 or the M16? They were designed in the 50's so they would fit right in.

Maybe the M79 Grenade launcher as well? I can see how even that would be a stretch if we supposedly stopped using conventional weaponry altogether when our timeline split from the FO universe's, but why the hell not?

Even the PTRS-41 was made in 1938 if we have to sideline the Bozar/M107.

My point is, I don't care for the energy/plasma based weapons, so I don't use them, if New Vegas was to have a few modern guns, would that really ruin the lore for you? No one complains about old guns being in Modern Warfare

The FN FAL was not invented post 1950's. It came into service in 1953!

Because a lot of people still think that FO2's weapons were non-canon and were a mistake.

They want planks that shoot 5.56 rounds, I guess...

AFAIK DEAGLE was made by the Israeli for the army (or something like that). It isn't a big stretch to say they've gotten around to invent it eventually, split history or not.
Maybe they didn't know the awesomeness that is the .223 pistol.

Just saying.
