Why do you play on a console?

Post » Fri Jul 06, 2012 2:36 am

This is going to make me sound really dim, but I find PC gaming utterly bewildering. I know nothing about it and wouldn't know where to begin. Honestly I find the need to be buying regular upgrades and having to put them in yourself very daunting. That and reading forums where people are constantly speculating over whether their system is good enough to run the latest games. I like to skip all that uncertainty and know that if it says PS3 on the box I can play it without confusion or issue. Probably  That said it would be Elder Scrolls that made me switch if I ever did. I am quite (very) jealous of all the mods you guys get.

You don't need to upgrade constantly. That's a myth. My laptop is three years old and not even close to needing any upgrades - and yet it wasn't outrageously expensive. Plenty of RAM, decent graphics processor, decent CPU - it should be able to play most games for a few more years. The reason people usually have to upgrade is when they're trying to milk another year or two out of a bottom-end computer that's past its prime. Find a game they wanna play, so they add 1 GB of RAM to meet minimum specs. Two months later there's another game out so they get a new graphics card that just barely meets minimum specs, and so on.

Don't try to just barely meet minimum specs and you won't have to be upgrading every other month. On the other hand, don't waste your time and money dropping $3000 on some ego-boosting "awesome" computer. $1800 and I've got a laptop that will last quite a while.

This is true. I'm playing Skyrim on a 2007-era computer. On my computer Skyrim runs without a hiccup. No stuttering, and just four CTDs in seven months of hard play (and even those may have been mod-related). In fact Skyrim runs better on my antique five-year-old computer than Oblivion.

My laptop can't even run Oblivion without sttuters. Needless to say my laptop runs Skyrim like a 30 pound baby coming out of a 4'11" woman. I got FO3 and FNV but I spent more time installing and unistalling mods and modifying ini. files than actually playing the game and when I finally got all the mods running how I like I stopped playing the game. For me sometimes its just better turning on the Ps3 and just play the vanilla games. Much less time consuming.

I have a Toshiba Satellite from 2007 that I would still be using except there's some odd problem where the lower third of the monitor is just solid gray with no other output. Besides that apparent physical damage, I expect it would run Skyrim just fine even though it's five years old too. I really think the issues with constant upgrading only hit people trying to barely meet minimum specs.

I do not have a gaming computer but even if I did I think I would still use a controller similar to the PS3 controller and play o a big screen TV. I am just the most comfortable playing like this but I do hate the restrictions I have playing on console compared to how PC gamers have it.

You see for me, i have never played on a PC, save 30 mins of Morrowind and no mods, So I do not know how it truly is to play on a PC. I guess, what I do not know I cannot miss. I love Morrowind (X-Box version), Oblivion (PS3 Version) and Skyrim (PS3 Version) in their vanilla states. I do not long for any more, but once I open Pandora's box and play with mods, my addictive personallity will take over.

1. I don't won't to spend money to make my computer compatible to play games.
2. I use a laptop.
3. Because I want to play Halo.
4. My friends don't play PC.
5. Because I feel like it.

Because I couldn't afford a proper PC, though my friend built me a PC for D3 and sent it to me for free so now I have the option of playing it on PC (which I already have begun doing). :)

Can you have your friend send me one too for free?

It doesn't take much computer to run Skyrim on Ultra settings. I've got a 2009 Toshiba Qosimo, paid $1800 for it, and it runs Ultra just fine. 18" screen and an HDMI output to send to a TV. It doesn't take a $3000 desktop to get the best out of Skyrim.

Not hating, but that's an absurd price.

This^^ I've been saying all along. I spent around $550 on my current computer and play Skyrim on high settings. Probably more like $580... Computer was $498 and upgraded the video card for Skyrim.. $80 I think.

I thought of this but I can't justify spending $500 for a new computer when I have a laptop that can play most games, including Skyrim. Only the new stuff really is unplayable (ME3, etc.)

For me, I refuse to use Steam, Origin, etc. I refuse to be told I can't use a product I paid $60 for, simply because my internet is down. I live in an area with an aged electrical grid. Even the slightest storm can drop power. Even if my power flickers, on XBOX, I just have to reload. I know to save often and so I don't lose much. My internet can be down for days though. And that's just not acceptable to me. Last thing I want is to come home from work to find the internet down..."Oh, guess I'll just go play my Ogre Battle emulator...again..."

Got Skyrim for PS3 as a gift but probably would have gone that route anyways because the PS3 is in a room with comfy furniture and a large hdtv.

Yep, i'm a glutton for punishment.

Yeah. That's why, even for pc games I own, I go for the things that rhyme with "whacks". The extra protections are just a pita, but I suppose it's a small price to pay.

You can use Steam without being online. The only reason people hate Steam is because they don't like copy protection. After thirty years of PC games with minimal or no copy protection, gamers have come to view free games as their right, and they hate Steam simply because it's an effective means of copy protection.

How is this an absurd price, when (1) it's much more than a game machine and (2) I've gotten three years' basically trouble-free use out of it and expect to get another three for sure? I bought a 360 in late 2008 and it died something like a year ago. Complete RROD. Had to buy a used one, and who knows how long that one will last. The 360 itself is on its last legs, and I'll be using this laptop well past when the next generation consoles come out.

I would agree $1800 would be absurd if all I could do on it was play games, like a console, but given that I use it for everything under the sun, internet, email, games, writing, tons of things, $1800 for something I expect to get six years use from isn't bad in the computer world. I could have spent $400 on a laptop, but it would probably be useless for much beyond email, writing, and some internet by now.

I am used to the controls, AND THERE IS NO MAC VERSION!!!

To be more clear, I can't get the Computer version not only because it doesn't exist, but I wouldn't have access to it anyways. Been trying to get into computer gaming, but I just don't do it because it would be a waste of my XBOX360.
There are so may advantages to computer gaming, like console commands and mods, so I do wish it was this way for me
