Bug List

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:52 pm

System Specs:
amd 5870 gpu 10.10 drivers
i7 930
windows 7 64 bit
6 MB RAM

Crashes:

I can't run this game more than 45 minutes without a crash. Most of the crashes will crash to desktop, but a few will BSOD. Some of the time I get freezes. There are frequent crashes in the beginning when shooting bottles with Sunny. Sometimes crashes when picking up objects. Crash when picking up the snow globe in the graveyard. 5 crashes or so when killing geckos with Sunny. Crash that deleted save files when fighting Powder Gangers in GoodSprings. Infinite loading when trying to read corrupted save files. I tried editing the config file to set the number of HW threads, but that didn't help. In all, I'd say I've crashed dozens of times.

Rendering Issues:

There's a bit of z fighting on the street signs for Primm.
While fighting the giant ants outside the Mojave outpost, I saw could see through the sides of the terrain.
I saw a large green (no-texture) ant model floating.
I saw some really weird green spikes in the terrain hundreds of feet high. (I had something similar with my terrain and it turned out I was stomping on memory. You really need to run something like valgrind or purify. Your customers are more forgiving than mine.)

A minor bug if one at all... The NCR scavenged parts from the quest Wheel of Fortune such as the NCR Computer Parts, etc... still show up in the Misc. tab from the PIPBoy screen after the quest is completed. They do not show up in any item transfer screens so you cannot put them in a container and you can't drop them either since they are still a quest item. It shows that they have a weight of 1 but I'm pretty sure they actually don't have any weight but my Misc. tab is cluttered as hell already and just wanted to bring this minor inconvenient bug to attention so I feel less of a pack rat. Thanks!

game freezes can't proceed with the quest: Beyond The Beef
I have to meet up with npc at 4pm - Chanucey (after finding investigator dead in his room)
location: bathhouse/steamroom
when i press "E" - talk to Chanucey - game freezes(only way out is to end the proccess in task bar),
if i stand next to him for less then a minute - game freezes,
Tryed to wait outside the steamroom for a while, came back - same result - FREEZE.
An other problem(dunno if its a bug or just me not finding the solution)
Brotherhood of steel, trying to isolate the virus, he tells me to check the terminals, i fund one with virus, cleared the particion, and he still said that we didnt capture the virus... tryed many times and checked all of the terminals/computers... but no result
Please let me know if anyone gets the same problems and does anybody knows if any of this will be fixed?

Quest: Debt Collector

I am on the step of going to Broc Flower Cave and getting bottle caps from Lady Jane's dead brahmin. When I enter the cave, I walk to where the brahmin is supposed to be but there's nothing there. (the Brahmin entity did not spawn)

I did previously explore the cave before starting the Debt Collector quest. I don't remember whether or not the brahmin corpse was present then.

I pre-ordered the Collector's Edition from Amazon and so got the Tribal Pack. While running around Goodsprings with my machete I encountered a VATS issue. When I enter VATS against a non-hostile target with my machete out I experience extreme lag and a 0% chance to hit. The mouse becomes very irresponsive and my framerate drops off to around 1-2 FPS or less. I can right mouse button out of VATS and the game returns to normal, however, bringing up the Pip-Boy once or twice after the VATS slowdown consistently causes a crash to the desktop that is caught and reported to Microsoft (i.e. not a blue screen). If I enter VATS using a firearm everything works normally.

Running Windows XP SP3 (32-bit), two 8800 GTS 320mb in SLI (Forceware 260.99), and have the latest patch installed (1.1.1.271). Dxdiag follows. I think that about covers it.

Good idea to have a central thread for this. :)

Biggest problem for me, right now, is random crashes and freezes. I've posted a DXDiag along with Windows Event Log entries http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1127610-fnv-doesnt-seem-to-like-7s-desktop-window-manager/page__p__16554504__fromsearch__1&#entry16554504. Generally, the game will either freeze up hard with a looping sounds, or just drop straight back to the desktop with a "Fallout:New Vegas has stopped warning" box. One rare lucky occasions, the game will drop back to the desktop, but will continue to run as an all-black screen in a window. While running in the window, I can hit F5 to get a quick save before ALT+F4ing the game. After each crash there are events in the Windows Event Log like the ones in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1127610-fnv-doesnt-seem-to-like-7s-desktop-window-manager/page__p__16554504__fromsearch__1&#entry16554504.

A player by the name of TempestKeep http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1127633-possible-random-crash-fix-win7-users-with-aero-theme-enabled/ that setting F:NV to run with "Disable Desktop Composition" helps with this, but it's still crashing on me.

I know these crashes are usually considered a random thing, but my one saved games is saved in the middle of the Legion's slave camp and faithfully crashes after standing round the camp for about three minutes. If any dev would like a copy of this save game, I'd be more then happy to get it to you. It's only a 3MB file, half a meg when Zipped, so email, FTP, carrier pigeons with USB sticks, whatever you want if it helps. :bonk:

Other annoying things:

1. NPCs never heal. Ever. A generic Goodsprings woman was attacked by geckos during the training missions, and a game-month later she still hasn't healed. She's been sleeping and, as far as I know, eating and drinking like the NPCs do sometimes, but hasn't healed at all yet. This isn't a big deal on nameless nobodies, but on quest givers and merchants, you just end up with one big empty desert after a while.

2. Passive mode doesn't seem to work with ED-E. When set to passive I'll frequently hear ED-E's "Attack!" music play, and turn around to see him charging off after some random wasteland critter. I've cycled him back and forth between aggressive and passive to "unstick" him, but he's still charging after enemies who haven't attacked.

3. The Four Eyes perk http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1129056-6-perception-pluss-four-eyes-perk-equals-5-perception-in-level-up-dialog/page__p__16556425__fromsearch__1&#entry16556425 level. This may be intended, or simply a jury-rigged way of getting it to work, but it could at least be noted in the trait's description.

Honestly though, all of the unhealing eye bots with S.P.E.C.I.A.L. deficiencies in the world can go unfixed if the game will just run without crashing. :sadvaultboy:

As mentioned before I'm getting audio glitches / bugs. When I fire my gun throw punches or any weapon audio is not played until 10 seconds later. If I unload a clip of any gun I well not hear the sound until seconds or even a minute later. Also dialogue is out of sync, when NPCs talk their speech starts late into the dialogue and their mouths are clearly out of sync, or there is no audio what-so-ever when they talk! I looked up what could be causing this glitch. Updated my sound drivers, I uninstalled reinstalled my sound drivers no go. I found this site http://www.prlog.org/11014661-fallout-new-vegas-crashes-graphics-glitches-no-sound-save-issues-solutions.html and one of the solutions was to play in windowed mode. When I play in windowed mode I have no issues what- so-ever with sound! So an issue I would like to see resolved is the audio problems I am having and the ability to play the game in full screen without the audio glitches! For now I'm playing in windowed mode and I hate playing in window mode!

Not really. The Devs know that there is a thread called "Bug List". If you look up at the right hand top corner there is a little box with a button called "Search". I you type "Bug List" into the box and click on "Search" it's the first thread in the list.

Yeah, and new visitors will magically know that there's a catch-all bug list topic, too! And magic fairies will come to our computers in the night and cure the bugs with their fairy wands!

Sorry, I may have gone overboard with my sarcasm there.

3. The space suit helmet is bugged and doesn't display male hair correctly (no idea about female hair). This is repeatable, but it doesn't always work exactly the same. Here's what it looks like optimally: http://imgur.com/yni3e.jpg . That's not my character's hairstyle, but I'm guessing that's an engine flaw and it's not a big deal. Here's what it looks like if I turn the camera a bit: http://imgur.com/GKZDH.jpg . Whoa! Where'd your hair go, guy? Looking a bit silly there, aren't ya? Here's what it looks like if I turn the camera the other direction: http://imgur.com/RE5wX.jpg . Again, this behavior isn't always the same, but it is definitely repeatable and happens almost any time I use the helmet with free-look. Normal third person usually looks fine, VATS is harder to watch but I'll keep my eye on it.

I've now confirmed that this bug shows up in VATS.

More bugs I discovered...

Should I post my entire list from the last thread? This really needs to be stickied.

The game randomly decided that my companions (Rex, Arcade) should go back to their starting areas instead of wait in the hotel room where I told them to wait. NPCs shouldn't just randomly decide to go home when they feel like it. I am well liked by the Followers and the Kings so that isn't the problem.

After going through a dialog about how Rex didn't like hats, the game crashed to desktop. When it did I noticed Apple was asking to update Quicktime, so I'm not 100% ready to blame the game.

Companions still give you their perks even when you tell them to wait in a hotel room somewhere.

I killed all the legion members at Cottonwood Cove. None of them gave me ears though. IMO all of Caesar's soldiers should give you ears when you kill them, not just the special ones that roam around.

I found a gold (?) mine in the wastes but aside from a little loot it was empty. The bottom of the mine had this chain link door with big fires on both sides and somebody was living there, but... Whatever it was went away I guess. Is that normal? I feel like I missed something cool.

I found two NCR glowing-one ghouls outside that same mine and neither of them gave me irradiated NCR dogtags after they died. Shouldn't they all have them? There was nothing to loot at all. Shouldn't they have NCR armor to loot too?

I can't examine Dr. Richards' patients in Camp Forlorn Hope even after I have talked to him a million times.

When swimming around near Hoover Dam, I only ever see a handful of fish near Cottonwood. Why doesn't the water have more? It's just weird to see like 2 fish near the dock and then the entire rest of the lake has no fish at all.

I am having an issue where I am unable to negotiate with the Great Khans on Boulder City Showdown.
I made sure i wore no faction equipment just a leather suit and sunglasses. i chose the negotiate option. Yet the Great Khans are listed as hostile on my radar and will shoot as soon as i approach. i tried sneaking with a stealth boy to get to Jessup but he is hostile. I have reloaded my save file restarted the game and nothing helps.
This is annoying as I ran into a similar problem when finding a sheriff for Primm, i opted to get meyers. I paid the 100 caps to get in and the door guard starts shooting me as soon as i get near the entrance. the guy turns hostile if i end the initial conversation event as well. I didnt bother reporting it since i figured my rep with the powder gangers overrides any option for that quest.
But seeing as how i should be neutral with the Khans having no altercation with them aside from the opening cinematic i had to find out and was certain this is a bug after watching a walkthrough vid that went the negotiation route.

my npc dissappeared. i still had his perk ( ed-e ) but he was gone. when i tried to acquire rex it said i had to release ed-e first. he did not return to primm. i had to go into console and kill him for his perks to go away so i could get rex. kinda a bummer really

It should be stickied. The OP/mod locked Grimmhounds thread and said new bug-threads would be locked as well. Didn't happen. People are still creating new bug-threads left and right, and this one gets lost within minutes. Sticky it I say.
Oh well, here's another bug:

- I have the 'Tribal Pack' and every time I launch the game, I get a steam-message 'Tribal Pack has finished downloading'.

Myself, I just can't play the game.
Get a nice CTD each time I'm out running over to shoot sarsaparilla bottles. If I'm lucky. Most of the time it's either a blue screen or a nice lockup, and I have to hit the reset button.

Symptoms are all the same. Play for perhaps four minutes, then all of a sudden the screen freezes, then starts blurring and flickering all over before going black. Audio usually keeps going just like normal, until I either get a BSOD (haven't seen those in a LONG while), or I just hit the reset button. My computer has managed giving me a CTD twice, but that was out of... eight or nine crashes. The rest were just straight to desktop.

Any news on anything? Or do we get to twiddle our thumbs and play other stuff while we wait?

Work around found for point 5 in my post http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1130833-bug-list/page__st__40__p__16574294__fromsearch__1&#entry16574294.

I was reading a whole bunch of info on graphical problems and I came across a post where someone mentioned that a small utility could be used to monitor graphics cards. I just so happen to have an eVGA graphics card and this utility is by eVGA and is called eVGA Precision, I'm not sure if it'll work for any other cards but it can be downloaded from the eVGA site.

Anyway it lets you monitor GPU performance and temperature and adjust clock speeds and what not so I installed it and tied it into my G15 keyboard. Default setting for the video card fan is 40%. One thing I noticed straight away was that FO:NV made the card sit at around 60C. As I walked around the temp went up to a consistant 72C to 76C, which from what I read is quite high. When it steadied at this temp it started to dump to the white screen as per usual and the fan didn't kick in to cool it down. So I manually set the fan to 60% and this had a big affect. Running around in game @60fps I can keep the GPU temp @ 62C to 63C and I haven't had a crash since.

So it seems that the nVidia drivers have killed the cooling or at least has the temp threshold for when the fan kicks in too high.

Edit: Sod it! Why is it that whenever things seem to be going well, 3 hours with out a crash or white screen, and I post what I think is a fix it goes and reverts back to what it was doing? Now I've gone back to crashing or white screening every 20 mins or so. :brokencomputer: It's still crashing and white screening even when the temp is 55C.

Radscorpions and ants glitch into hilly terrain even getting totally stuck. Pathfinding is also glitched.

Weird crash for me, started happening after looting the gas station just south of Primm (Mojave rest stop or something,) I fast travelled back to Goodsprings, stashed a bunch of stuff, sold up the rest to chet, came outside, then went into Pip-boy to re-bind my weapons, as soon as I pressed a number key the game instantly crashed. I had no problems binding stuff before (no problems with the game at all) but now almost any time I press a number key in the pipboy it's an instant crash. Very repeatable, svcks. I managed once to avoid this (cycled all my weapons outside of pip, cycled all the tabs in items, then tried binding,) but can't repeat, so every time I try bind a weapon it's a crash.

Going to try updating windows, will edit if this fixes it

edit: Updates didn't fix it :(

Fixed it by: Using steam to check integrity of files, found something needing fixing
Disabling AA

Worked fine, played 7 hours yesterday with no crash

Minor Bug
Wearing a T51-b Power Armor and sitting in the Sloan outhouse creates some graphical issues with the shoulder guards (Don't know if it's all outhouses or just that particular one... I'd imagine it'd be all of them). They are lower than where the actual shoulders are and clip into the character a bit.

Had "ballcap with glasses". Killed guy with same, when I looted him, it never showed in my inventory (I shouldve had 2, right?).

When I went to put my "ballcap and glasses" into a container, the invisible one suddenly shows up in my inventory.

When trying freeing the captives for the quest Booted, I killed Decanus and he just respawned. I reloaded the game and it happens everytime, so I'm sure this is a bug.

Another thing that may or may not be a bug is Manny Vargas' terminal is unlocked and has no karma penalty. Is this a bug?

-The most common occurrence of this that I've seen has involved the various types of scorpion enemies. They become lodged in the ground and vertically slide around tipped backwards.

You mean horizontally? Now that you mention it, I've seen this a couple of times. On the road from Primm to Mojave outpost, in the desert to your right I saw scorpions moving fast horizontally tipped backwards, sort of like a speedboat on the sand. :) And in the same general area I once saw a pink thingie sticking out of the road moving horizontally. My targeting reticle identified it as a scorpion.

12.7mm SMG is not accepting 12.7mm AP Ammo, possibly the 12.7mm Pistol aswell, checked only with the SMG (Basic and HP Ammo works ok)

I've had this exact same thing happen with Biker Goggles.

I have experienced the obvious scripting errors, the terminal in Nipton etc and numerous issues with enemies in walls/floors etc.

My biggest problem is the game hard-locking my system. It can't even CTD, it just forces me to hit the reset button which is not good for my PC. At first it was just all the time, I couldn't play at all until I set all my gfx settings to the absolute minimum. I then used the dll fix and could use slightly better settings. But ever since I went to vault 22 the game is completely broken again. I tried reloading old saves and ultimately starting a new game and still it just locks within a couple of minutes of me starting to play. Its behaving like my PC is overheating and freezing up, but it isn't. CPU, GPU, ambient in-case, MB and HDD temps are all absolutely fine. I just don't understand. It was fine for 20+ hours of play then suddenly I enter one location and the whole GAME breaks. I just don't understand unless the crashing was caused by a problem in the area and the crashing itself has damaged my game files. Tried re-verifying game cache and all that did was find that 1 file that it always thinks is broken.

It must be a fundamental flaw somewhere in the game engine that is causing this behaviour and so I assume that there will be fixes on the way.

Its like they built a house, called Oblivion, and some cracks appeared. They patched them a bit and everything was ok. Then they built a second floor on top called Fallout 3 and the cracks widenened and some new ones appeared and they patched it all up as best they could and just put up with the occasional leak in the roof or draft through the walls or whatever. Then someone else came a long and put another floor on top and suddenly the whole building started to crumble under its own weight. And it turns out that it was because they never got the foundation level and straight before they started. Come on Bethesda, stop flogging the horse, it's dead already. Great games, all of them, but the engine really has just gone way beyond its service life. Build a new engine from the ground up and get the foundations right before you start putting a house on it.
