Dont play Dead is Dead

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 9:10 am

If it feels like a waste to you don't do it. If you don't enjoy it, don't do it.
Okay. Maybe that's why I don't do it. I don't remember ever stating that i did...

So dead is dead means when you die you stop playing that character altogether right? I couldn't play like that. I play on Expert and I get killed all the time... and I think it's great.

I'm really glad I didn't try this playstyle, I've died stupidly, quite a bit.

Throat of the world has a nice view, let's see a better view by getting close to the edge. Thoughts that pass through my mind and I'm flapping my arms frantically, "I need to put horseshoes ont he bottom of my boots, my Horse never falls off a mountain."

Big room, walls lined with coffins, one decorated coffin sits in the middle of the opposite wall. Yeah, no way Draugr are gonna come out of all those coffins.I'll just run down the middle and smack the big dude climbing out of the decorated coffin. Final thoughts? "That's quite a lot of red dots on my compass all of a sudden"

Firebreath in town is so cool, all the ladies love it. Inhale.....Ex-guard walks right in front of you-hale. Damn, I just set a guard on fire, wonder if anyone will notice. Yeah, they noticed.

I have to say, a game is a game and saves are there for a reason! Of course a lower level character is more prone to dying than a high lvl toon who's decked out with great armor and blades and higher skill level. So, why would anyone play DiD style with a low level toon? o.0 I mean, there should be rules that you can reach at least lvl 25 or something.

Well, I play a game like Skyrim to explore every nook and cranny and do everything there is to do! I would never choose to play DiD style! Ever! LOL The notion alone is silly IMHO! (and no I'm not hatin', I'm just sayin') My game is immersive and intense without quitting when my toon dies.

I know how you feel. I've been there. I've done that. It's insane how much more logic it takes to play the game. It's so much more immersive too. Every kill feels rewarding just because you get to live for another second, minute, hour or day. I used to only play this way until my last character who was an Orc Warrior. It was fun at first and much more realistic, well, as realistic as a game like Skyrim can be. Then I got to level 54 and It started to take so much longer just to level one skill up, even by one point. So ultimately I ended up driving myself crazy and jumped off the face of a mountain. Suicide is the only way to avoid things like this. I can see why people would want to play like this, but me? No more. Thanks. If you enjoy playing this way, great. If you've never tried it. I wouldn't recommend it. It's fun, until you get so far that you can't die unless you fall off the edge of the earth. But, that's just my input. If you want to try it, or you absolutely love playing this way, go for it. I may not like it. But, we're all entitled to our own oppinion. Right?

This conversation is almost surreal, I are confused.

On topic, I agree with the OP, DID is way too frustrating in a single player environment. I played D2LOD religiously and dabbled in hardcoe and the only thing that made it bearable was that I had people to support me the whole time, without that support it just feels like I'm punishing myself, but to each his own and if it works for you more power to you. Personally I turn the HUD off if I want to immerse myself in the game more, but that does have its drawbacks.

Yeah i'm really enjoying playing without the HUD..it has some annoying issues, but it almost feels like for me the game is 'meant' to be played minus the HUD. It also causes you to be on your toes more as you don't know whether you're fighting a bandit, or a bandit plunderer etc.

I kind of like it TBH, there is so much impulse to pick up crap you don't need, I find this way I am less likely to do it because I might also pick up that basket or something too lol.

Makes me wish I was playing on PC as i'm sure there will probably be a bunch of mods that do a great job of tweaking stuff like this without leaving out everything.

im sorry if i sound like a noob but what's a DiD character?

To answer your question, relatively pointless "IMHO".

You play and if you die, the game is over, your move on to another character. It's pretty much Roleplaying, again... "IMHO".

Yeah. Human nature, it's great ain't it? You have it all and you throw it away because you can't handle it.

I'm not into DID as it doesn't feel quite on par with how I perceived old dice games. Always we'd work in parties and even work in pairs, and when you did find fatal trouble, there were usually some kind of "save roll mechanism" or trading in a lifepoint for some negative perk. Point is, I was never completely alone. Yet, there were of course the ultimate sacrifice at times, either for just fumbling badly with your rolls, or the GM fluking his own rolls - which had a tendency to happen if the "roleplaying spirit" was really low and we played like idiots - guess we deserved what what coming to us. But in Skyrim, and especially during the first playthrough, we have no idea about the scaling and who is weak or strong in what areas.

Like, Forsworn and Hagravens being super easy once you get up there in level, yet I found a word wall with 2+1 of these and I struggeled like hell with them. It sure didn't match my earlier experiences with them.

I've got about four hours of playtime now without the HUD, and have doing the 'heroes nightmare' type play on master for a bit...it's fun but can be really frustrating, i'm glad I don't user archery much as no HUD would make that horrible I think. The HUD adds a whole new level when you can't see your health lol, you just run the minute you start getting hit alot.

earlier this week i posted a thread about how great the DiD playstyle is and how it is the only way to play. at that point i was thirty+ hours in with a level 16 breton who had never tasted death..that was until i went poking around in a dwemer ruin and got 1 shotted by a spinning blade trap. what a lame way to go, it was the definition of anticlimactic and the deep immersion i had built up was chopped to pieces by some ridiculous trap. It was literally unavoidable i opened a door and it was right there-instantly killed without the slightest chance of surviving. I even had a decorted house in riften and had recently became a nightingale.all the steam was let out of the game when i opened that fateful door and i fear ill never get the same feeling from skyrim that i had predeath. I mean i dont want to start another DiD i put so much work into my last one and now the game feels a little boring. I think Dead is Dead ruined skyrim for me

I suggest that you pretend that that anticlimactic death was a horrible nightmare and then load up the last save game. Think of it as a warning vision.

Seriously, don't let a concept designed to bring you fun lead you in the other direction.

I've tried DiD, and the extreme feeling of danger was really amazing. Unfortunately, for me, RP > *, and having to cut a story short because of a death is a horrible waste of a potentially great character concept. I suppose I could run a DiD character in parallel with a normal, RP character, but I'm not sure I could play a non-RP guy. Maybe if I went for a generic RP build such as a paladin that I could replay over and over again.

Look most people don't get a "beautiful death". [censored] happens, that's what makes DiD interesting,

HEY! Just like Chester Copperpot from the Goonies; greatest and most famous treasure hunter in the world, offed by one of One-Eyed Willie's earliest tricks. Classic. You may not think it, but that was a good way to die. Relatable as well :)

word to all that

I don't even play DiD, but it's an interesting way to play that I haven't thought of. It just irks me that you pompous windbags like him thinking they're better than everyone because they have a rigid play style (not refering to individual builds, but the players ideas). I'm going to give my new character a try before I go on to DiD. I would use this one, but he already fell in battle to the first bandit I came to because I forgot that I couldn't absorb the damage like I could on my first playthrough :wallbash:

I'm still kinda stuck on the fact that you miss your decorated house...

I play to have fun, to entertain myself. If I thought a DiD run would be fun to play, I'd try it. Heck I'd even write a journal for the guy up to the point he was killed. Right now though, I'm just having to much fun playing and quick-saving.

Sims 3 is a decent enough of a game where you get to decorate houses

Deep immersion ruined by getting killed by a spinning blade chopping you to bits?

Do you understand what immersion is?
