Come on Skyrim! Come on Skyrim! Anything other then a top 5 finish for this brilliant masterpiece would be a travesty :tes:

Haven't even heard of most of the games in the list, quite a few Japanese titles I've never played before.

Based on the few games I've had a chance to play extensively, I suppose I'd rank my favorite RPGs as follows, in terms of which games seemed to provide a better role playing experience:

1. TES V: Skyrim
2. Fallout New Vegas
3. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
4. TES IV: Oblivion
5. Fallout 3
6. TES III: Morrowind
7. Dragon Age: Origins
8. Neverwinter Nights 2
9. Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords
10. Ultima III: Exodus

Also some brilliant Action or Adventure games with RPG elements I really enjoyed, but might not exactly categorize as RPGs: Amnesia, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, Bioshock, Bioshock 2, Alpha Protocol, Deus Ex, DayZ, The Walking Dead.

These lists are always so amusing. The only thing I find them good for is when I'm trying to remember the name of some game I played years ago, that often may appear on such lists. Or just a walk down memory lane. :)

It's a decent game, but top 20 seems like a bit of a stretch to me. Top 30-40 perhaps...
And I've been so lenient already! In my own personal top 100, it would be in the top 10 or top 5.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance should be higher IMO. Underrated game. Don't know what the localization was like though, that is always the wild card. You can emulate GBA pretty easily btw.

Edit: IGN gave it http://www.ign.com/articles/2003/09/05/final-fantasy-tactics-advance-2?page=1 in fact.

Lol what? If any game should be called an RPG, then it should be Dungeon Master. Forget all the fluff in Baldur's Gate and Planescape. Dungeon Master was what RPGs are supposed to be: hard as nails, combat driven, number crazy, with enough story to keep it interesting.

Indeed, well said.

A lot of people have an awful tendency to completely overlook RPGs of the 80s / early 90s and act like later games such as Baldurs Gate and it's ilk defined the genre.

My hall of fame is 3.5, and its earlier iterations. Those are the golden books that started it all.

I really hate these kinds of lists by the "awesomely unbiased and insightful" gaming journos.

Who can honestly say they have no idea what to expect and what not to expect from the top positions?

*Anyways, it's IGN so it can well be ignored.

First of all, thanks for posting that, I didn't know IGN has this ongoing effort.

Too bad they made their list unqestionable by the time they haven't finished the first half.

Stating that the criteria in the ranking is which game "most accurately exemplify the tenants of the role-playing game genre" means they reward professionality and faithfullness (to the RPG genre), not commercial success. Skyrim is totally the opposite of that - shallow RPG / content wise, buggy with poorly detailed and implemented features, but sold expectionally well. So if IGN include it in the list, we have nothing to talk about. And I suppose they will, probably in the TOP5 ...

Still, I hope I'll find a few unknown (for me), but valuable (probably j)RPG which worth the time and energy to play.

Yup, they are just drawing them out of a hat. Mass Effect 2 chimes in at #57.

Isn't dungeonmaster a zoo tycoon style game where you have to defend your dungeon?

And you basically described Call of Duty with statistics. Not that i'm saying your wrong, but RPG is a genre to wide to say that your preference is the best, and Baldur's Gate and Planescape are what I would call great RPG's. Action RPGs for example are different to whatever BG is.

Just because the combat isn't great doesn't mean the game isn't.

A lot of people have an awful tendency to completely overlook RPGs of the 80s / early 90s and act like later games such as Baldurs Gate and it's ilk defined the genre.
Maybe that's because a lot of people weren't born in the 70's, how dare they have not played video games when they were five!

That's Dungeon Keeper. Dungeon Master is an old first-person dungeon crawling RPG.

It has a good chance of being number 1. It is the most successful RPG ever critically and commercially. Hell its considered one of the best games of all time.
