I agree that TOS will probably damage the Elder Scrolls name, evidenced already by the devs complete lack of respect for the existing lore.

Hey write me a ten volume history of Tamriel starting from the first year of the first era and covering every year of every era up to the events of Skyrim.

Hey, everybody constantly complains about TES becoming "mainstreamed" which is supposedly ruining the game, so if this really hurts the credibility of the series, they may go back to a more traditional TES which could be nice. You never know.

We needed this. This series needed this. It was time for TES to branch out and try new things before it was too late.

A pretty ridiculous statement. The series has been going from strength to strength with each release. This is demonstrated by fan reaction (generally), commercial results and even Zenimax's own PR. To coin a phrase: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I see no argument that TES 'needed' an MMO 'before it was too late'. It seems obvious that Zenimax simply wanted to jump on the MMO bandwagon because it can be extremely lucrative, and because they are sitting on one of the most popular franchises in gaming right now.

or because of the millions of fans who want an online TES game, and i wouldn't say TES has followed the " if it ain't broke don't fix it' motto or they wouldn't have striped so much of the previous TES out of Skyrim. Us PC players are very very lucky and can ( and have already) modded everything they took out and put it back into the game, viva PC !!!!

Which is a good thing. Like Matt Firor said in a recent video interview. That means we care. Some gamers would accept anything thrown their way as long as it has a TES label on it. That kind of thinking devalues the standard.

Imo, that is very true. The point being - they would except anything ES. That is how gamers have become - many of these "hardcoe" fps, mmo, etc. gamers, - brains are fried, as if they were on crack - which they are in a sense - "game crack". They will take it no matter what it is - as long as it is "shiny", per se.

Also, people keep bringing up lore - while there may be a lot of lore in the ESO?, imo it will not be near the quality of an ES game. Also, most MMMo'rs look forward to meeting online and batling - not, reading books about ancient times, classes, etc. etc. etc.

ESO - IS A DISGRACE TO TES - IMO!

You're entitled to your opinion, but you can hardly claim that those of us who are more open minded towards the game have had our 'brains-fried'. Apart from the people making the 'TESO is going to kill WoW' threads- most of the pro-TESO people are cautiously, or in some cases purely, optimistic due to the new time period providing new-lore, which you have no way of knowing if it will be of poor quality - and indeed Bethesda is helping with this aspect, the ability to explore Tamriel with friends, and for some the MMO facilities such as massive PvP, which IMO is well contextualised in the Cyrodill conflict. And isn't the beauty of TES that everyone plays differently? You say MMO player look forward to meeting and battling, which is true, and there will be people doing this, but for many of us, we'll take advantage of the books, quests and stories (which should be included as they have said they are transitioning everything that makes TES TES, I.e. The books) which can, if Bethesda lends a helping hand and the MMO aspect is developed at expense of this (as in they put story first), provide us with an intriguing, isolated from the main franchise bubbled, new I sight into Tamriel.

However, it could, just as easily, be a failure. For instance, the artwork I've seen is horrible - like something out of Disney, but I'm hoping the limitations of the Hero engine could counteract this artist's rather odd TES vision. The MMO raiding aspect could take precedent in development, leaving everything we love about TES, the lore and immersion, behind in the dust - but if they've asked Bethesda for help with the lore, I can't see why this would happen.

The point is, many of us have our own constructive reasons for why we aren't straight out hating it. Ironically, you talk about us liking it because our brains are fried, but you haven't come up with any real point on why the game should svck, just theories about how an MMO could ruin TES. I understand at you're concerned, but you, and the person your quoting, could be a little more constructive, and a little less patronising, in the future.

I havent seen any evidence of "millions of fans" wanting a tes mmo. Its quite the opposite in fact.
Some would like a possibility to play multiplayer coop TES, but not a mmo.

As long as they are looking at this from the perspective of building an online Muti-player Elder Scrolls world and not a mainstream MMO they should be fine.

By this I mean focusing on what TES is and not on what the MMO world has seen success with. It is very feasible for this to work, and work very well. Provided they focus more on TES and not copy the modern MMO template.

There are alot of things in the modern MMO that are good, and alot that is horrible. There are alot of things in The Elder Scrolls line that made it unique and brought hardcoe MMORPG players steadily back to their single RPG's because of it. If they capitaize on that it will be a great thing for the TES series and MMO's.

If they try to make something with the intention of beating WoW at its own game it will be a mistake.

I would argue the going from strength to strength with each release - I still prefer Morrowind to Skyrim by a lot (by about 2500 hours at the moment, in playtime), and I would argue that they are simply getting easier for the masses to play, and still very different from what they've normally played, and this makes them get all excited. It could just be me, but I find a huge amount of people and critics praising parts of games I don't like nowdays - I know several reviews that praised Skyrim's lack of "useless skills, unnecessary classes and pointless weapons" that were found in Oblivion. Oblivion itself was praised for factors removed that I enjoyed from Morrowind. I think this is opitimized for me in the Diablo 3 reviews - "Diablo 3 has removed the need to specialize your character (in stats and skills) on level up, and the game now does this for you. We think this is a great improvement , it is now up to your equipment to decide your specialization".

I almost choked on my food when I read that, it's exactly why I hate D3, in practicly those words, and it's being praised.

I find the majority of large game series are getting easier to play, and this is not a bad thing for most. Many find it more enjoyable, but I will always be playing my Diablo II and Morrowind.

Even if TESO tanks badly, Zenimax cannot ignore the huge success of Skyrim. If anything, they will learn that there's still a much viable market for single player sandbox type of games that can be tapped for huge profits.

Dont think it possible. This game sells well, and only time will tell how far they get. Worse they can do is like the rest, massive initial sales and after 2-3 month empty server. But thats normal! I dont think they get more than 2 mill like SWTOR but its something between 1-2mill.

Relevance?

And I'd like to see these "lots of people" who now no longer trust BioWare.

I'd also like to see their maturity level, because if they no longer trust a game company because they tried to branch out and it wasn't "OMG AMAZING!" (even though it's still successful), their opinion is rather meaningless.

That's like hating the entire Mario franchise because you didn't like Mario Paint.

I agree with you.

A lot of people on these boards like to speak about trust in a game company as they were people that we count on to do something for us. They talk about a series as if it only has one "proper" way to be executed. They refer to franchises not like stories, but like a line of toys, where certain features are expected for ages X-Y.

It's very sad.

Game companies are companies, they are like factories and they churn out games as products. Expect them to create more than one, and more than one type. Just beacuse a particular series, or even a single game in a series, isn't something you like, doesn't mean that the whole company is useless. Generalizing to that extent is just juvenile.

Also, game lore is as much a story as any book, movie, or play. They branch out from one medium to another, and a good story can make the jump into all sorts of variations. TES has books, CDs, and games. The fact that they want to make another, new type of game is a good thing, not a bad one. If you don't like this game, that's fine. You don't have to play it. But if you don't like this game, it has in no way destroyed any of the other games in the series. Skyrim will still be there, so will Ob, Mor, Dag, and Arena. Whichever one is the "true" tes to you, it's still there.

And you know what? TES: VI will arrive too, just like it would have if TESO were never created. I wish people would stop acting like this experiment is going to poison the water at Bethesda game studios and make that development team somehow incapable of coding another game.

Goodness.

After waiting 5 years (?) for a new TES game, I was hoping that the resources from Skyrim's success would lead to more robust development and a stepped up pace for new content/sequels. If this truly does not divert resources or otherwise have any impact on the continued development of the single player franchise then I am not concerned and wish them best of luck, despite my personal opinion that a TES MMO is a huge mistake and compromises the core experience beloved by players of the franchise.

The fact that it's being produced by Zenimax Online offers some but not much consolation, seeing as how they share a bank account.

Its only a mistake if it fails. If I like it then its a success. I play both MMOs and TES games. If they can merge the two kudos to them
