Meet the New Vegas Companions

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:03 am

Also, I'm willing to bet that Rex's companion side quest involves saving his brain. That and based on his dual colored brain, it looks like about half of that gray matter is already brain dead... O.o

I hadn't even noticed that...yikes.

Wonder if thats going to result in any strange character quirks?

(like Rex's previously mentioned "no hats" policy)

i know i was rather dissapointed when they replaced him with lily.

screw lily i love you marcus

I hear ya, man. :(

No Dogmeat? :( Don't get me wrong, a robot dog is cool and all, but I'd really prefer to atleast have the option of a regular dog. I just don't see myself exploring with a robo-dog. It just doesn't feel the same. Maybe it's a matter of style?

Yeah I'm also not overly excited about Cyber-Hound Mk. III, LEO Support Model, Serial Number B955883 (a.k.a. "Rex"). I have 3 dogs myself and I love the idea of a cyber-dog, but the brain-in-a-bubble thing is over-used and would bug me every time I look at him. It would remind me of a canine Robobrain. :P I mean, how do you pet a dog like that? Pet the Brain? Just wouldn't feel right, I must put that poor dog to death first-thing!

I wonder if Raul get his hair after you do his quest. That was some badass gunslinger hair.

I'm still waiting on an Asian companion. :o

Veronica looks like Rose from Two and a Half men.

*sigh* some people are never happy...

Here are some of my counterpoints in italics below:

im kind of meh on the companions.

*snip*

Better Healing – While Arcade is a companion, the player regains more health from all sources. unfortunatly its not to lickly that they would make the game that mutch harder than the base dificulty in FO 3

> His perk will be more useful in hardcoe since you have to eat anyway, you will get more HP from it and since stims heal over time, bigger chunks of HP at a time will be a better advantage...

Spotter – While Boone is a companion, hostile targets are highlighted whenever the player is actively aiming. thus negating the need to glance at the comase for pips, or even look at the screen and see that oh yah, thoes legion types are what you need to shoot at. . .honestly is he suposed to be the companion for morons or something?

> If you are sniping at a single target you don't really need this, but of you are at a far off distance like that Dinosaur head and you have to kill multiple targets before they close in your location and let's say they are attacking at night, then the highlights on those targets will be invaluable.

Perk: Whiskey Rose – While Cass is a companion, she and the player gain Damage Threshold when they drink Whiskey. Additionally, the player does not suffer intelligence loss from consuming alcohol and ignores the negative effects of alcohol addiction.AKA the companion that requires you to be in a drunken stupor during the more interesting parts of the game. . . I was wondering why MADD annouced a boycott of your game.

> There are no vehicles in the game so MADD shouldn't have any beef... ;)

Perk: Stealth Girl – While Lily is a companion, the duration of Stealth Boys is increased by 200% and all Sneak Attack Critical Hits do an additional 10% damage.Ok a bat[censored] crazy senial supermutant is going to give stealth bonuses. and if shes even remotly like my experience with Falks (who tended to go bat[censored] crazy when I was trying to stealth) im suspecting that one will end up negating the other realy quickly,

> I don't know about you, but when I'm in stealth position and everyone was shooting at Fawkes because he couldn't stealth, I was almost always safer and I still got the stealth hit bonuses anyway. With that said I'm sure the Super Grandma Mutant Lily, since she's Nightkin, will be able to stealth and with the advanced companion wheel options, will not go aggro on mobs you are trying to sneak past.

Perk: Regular Maintenance – While Raul is a companion, the Condition of weapons and armor decays 50% slower.ok lets review, you can now get repair kits, surplus weapons can be used to repare weapons, and Weapons decay slower if you raise repair skill which you will be smart to raise just because (A) you cant guarantee this guy will stay alive unless you intend to reload every time he dies and (B) you may not get this companion in the second place. . . can someone explain why decay is even in the game?

> Weapon and armor degradation is supposed to add more "role playing" realism to the game. With that said, if you don't like to repair stuff, then this may be the companion for you. Hopefully companions in general are not death magnets and you are able to keep them alive through an entire play through.

Perk: Scribe Assistant – while Veronica is a companion, the player can craft Workbench items through Veronica’s dialogue. ok so now im required to lug around all the other parts that may not be found when I want to make something. . . or I can just fast travel to where my workbench and parts pile is. . . never mind that most playthroughs I just ignored the craft crap.

> She may not have the best perk for you, but again if you intend to play hardcoe, being able to craft ammo on site instead of hauling your crafting gear to the nearest workbench will be far from useless...

Perk: Enhanced Sensors – while ED-E is a companion, the player can detect enemies at an increased range. Additionally, enemies will appear on the player’s compass and can be targeted in V.A.T.S. even when cloaked why do I have the sneeking suspicion that this will only realy be needed in one place

> Although the increased range will be helpful in most any situation where there are potential hostiles, I have to agree, I'm guessing it will be particularly useful against cloaked hostiles, like the Nightkin.

Perk: Search and Mark – While Rex is a companion, unequipped chems, firearms, and ammunition within a short distance are highlighted when you zoom the camera. At first I was thinking ok a version of Dogmeats ability that does not result in him going running off through minefeilds or off the map and out of sight resulting in him getting stuck in terain, then I realised that bascialy its searching for things while in zoom mode. . . Im suspecting that in reality it will be faster to just look for things the old fasioned way?

> True, most gamers, particularly FO3 gamers are thorough enough to clean out an area before they move on. Then again, maybe there was something you missed and you will be able to catch it with the trusty Rex-O-Vision [TM]. ;) Personally, I would have loved to have this vision to pick up all those stray Alien Power Cell ammo from the Firelance encounter, because that just gets scattered all over the place and the only sure way to get the accessible (and not so accessible ones) ones was to use Dogmeat...

I forgot about the "no hats" thing with Rex. If he has to expose his head, then so does everyone else! LOL

That's a good way to get shot by NCR troops.

Aw man...I just know I'm gonna pull a brain-fart one day and forget to take off some PA while fast-traveling to an NCR base

/snip/

Optimism is a rare thing these days...

About the companions themselves,
they look cool

I don't think I'll ever get used to the whole bubble brain thing for Rex,
I mean I understand his brain is a part of his background but it still kinda creeps me out

And Lily, I really want to grab her as a companion for my stealth playthrough (favorite playthrough)
but I really hope I can find some sort of helmet that fits a nightkin cause that upper lip thing is gonna creep me out

But they are all still good nonetheless

There were alot of times in FO3 where I searched through entire dungeons and ended up missing valuable loot that was right in front of my face, forcing me to go back after the fact.

Would have killed to have Rex with me back then.

im kind of meh on the companions.

to be honest my first reaction was ok they took the most annoying part of Fallout 3, and "improved" them by tacking on the single most annoying type of quest in games (the Escort quest) and then furtherstraqed on "perks", some of which seem questionable at best

/snip

holy christ, who *%!!#*! in your cornflakes?

this is why I stopped visiting NMA. there's always gonna be that select group of whiners and purists who find a way to be angry about everything. you don't like the companions? don't use them.

(EDIT: I was surprised to find out a word was not immediately censored. I've now censored myself. >< )

Agreed I'm playing as an Archealogist character similar to Indiana Jones and this would really help me make sure I collect all the things that "Belong in a museum!". I am not sure who else will get to come along and help me loot rare things for the Museum/House

It's even confirmed that you can get The Indie hat. I'm thinking Indie hat and something explorer etc.

I'm disappointed you can't have Marcus as a follower but I love both of the non-human choices it's going to be tough to pick just one. I hope ED-E is psychotic meatbag killer robot which might tip the scales for me. :gun:

I'm kind of pissed that Marcus isn't a companion. I guess
I'll go with ED-E and Arcade or Veronica.

She's a Nightkin, they're abit different.

I imagine having dark blue skin is more effective for blending in with the darkness rather than being green.

I'm not sure but on Rex's playing card included with the collector's edition, the sentence on the card that has quotes from the characters themselves seems to have a piece of dialogue from whoever gives you Rex (presumably The King) rattling off some sort of set of rules or some such, with the second one being that Rex "doesn't like hats or the people who wear them".

Maybe its just one of those things you need to be careful of
just like with Boone, if you plan on having him you can't go anywhere near a Ceasar Legion member.....well if you don't want the guy dead

That or starts randomly attacking settlers with headgear.

Heh.

It might not be a real requirement as much as it is a funny line signifying the dog's possible self consciousness about his brain being in a jar on top of his head.

On a sidenote, looks like ED-E was the companion Josh was talking about people missing in Primm in the demo.

Understandably, alot of people would overlook an eyebot floating through town since they were pretty much useless in FO3/a very minor NPC and couldn't be talked to.

I would choose ED-E and Raul on 1st walkthrough
Boone and Rex on 2nd
maybe choose Lily on 3rd walkthrough (I would have to wonder, since she is a Nightkin does she turn invisable when you are in stealth?)
