Overrated: Final Fantasy VI, all games by Bioware.

Underrated: The Longest Journey, Grim Fandango.
lol what? FF6 overrated? u do know how old that game is right? 1994. absolutely amazing for its time. and is argueably the best Jrpg out there to date. all bioware games being overrated i can agree with though.

nope fallout NV sold 5million copies in 1month and it happens to be my fav game on xbox360. anyone who shuns it is an idiot, thier loss.
And those who bought it complained it was a fallout 3 clone apparently. I dont see why people dont prefer NV to F3.

That's how everyone decides if a game is under or over rated. Every single person.
Not really, I like Bioshock, battlefield 3 and DAO. But theyu are overrated.

Portal is awesome though :(
It was ok, unique spin on puzzle games, enjoyed it at first before novelty wore off. But it dosent deserve a cult like it has. IMO it didnt even warrant a sequal.
Over-Rated: Assassins Creed, how did a fairly interesting premise for a game which even gave itself an in-game reason to literally explore any historical time-period ever become the [censored] atrocious waste of time and money that it is now?
Indeed. One game with ezio was enough. Brothrhood and Revelations dont add much to the story. Victorion London, fuedal Japan, Ancient Greece, list goes on. Plenty of interesting places, but noooo, lets focus on italy and ezio. Also imo I liked assassins creed 1 more before I found out about the time thing. I would rather it be about some assassin order effcting history (excuse to have different times) than 2012, templars, NWOs and aliens.

The most underrated is probably Vagrant Story.

castlevania SOTN

I like where some people's heads are.

Overrated: 95% of AAA titles. Many of them ARE good, but they're not "stand outside for 2 hours waiting for the game to be released" good. I think the only games that ever fully live up to the hype are Blizzard games. Most AAA games, even if they're very good, last a month. Blizzard games last many, many years.

Underrated: Too many playstation games. PS1 and PS2 have so many gems that are missed out on because people have this weird idea that to be loyal to their xbox means they shouldn't get a PS2 and play the classics. If I was going to recommend a system to someone completely new to video games, I'd probably recommend the PS2 since it is backward compatible. You can get every classic FF, FFT, chrono trigger, Mega Man 1-8, Castlevania: SOTN, Vagrant Story, Kingdom Hearts, Tekken Tag Tournament, Metal Gear Solid 1-3, and probably a number of other games that are classic but aren't neccesarily coming to mind as classics right now.

.

like i said, if they are too quick to judge it like that then their loss, they dont deserve it.

and this is the last time ill say it, deus ex 1 and system shock 2 are the greatest games of all time, if you shun them you are missing out big time. for those who liked fallout nv (or any rpg shooter) you will love these...

oh and one last bit of proof is deus ex 1 won over 40 GOTY awards, the most ever given.

i didn't like the inconsistent graphics style and it didn't feel like it had aged very well compared to Chrono Trigger.

Gears of War, Halo, COD, Morrowind, Street Fighter, Half Life all over rated. Assassins Creed too. I loved the first two, then they turned into annual cash cows and Ubisoft threw away a great idea and turned it into rehashed crap.

Overrated? The usual suspects - Call of Duty, Halo, etc. Not bad games at all, but blown hugely out of proportion because of heavy marketing and their popularity among the huge number of extremely caual gamers, i.e. those gamers that maybe purchase one or two games a year (usually a franchise game such as CoD or FIFA), and only ever play that.

Underrated? A few off the top of my head:

Strife
The Darkness
Condemned
Condemned 2
Alpha Protocol
Mafia

Pretty often, but at the very least I wish more people could figure out the difference between "rating" and "popularity". So many games that got pretty much perfect scores across the board almost everywhere, but are apparently underrated because they didn't sell well.

Graphics quality doesn't matter, but aesthetics/style does.

Only case of that I know of the top of my head is Alan wake. Even that sold pretty well though. Enough to get a sequal.

And and older game, not sure about reviews, but JSRF. Good game, dont hear much about it.

Under-Rated: I don't know, I've always felt that Call of Duty as a franchise doesn't get enough attention but that's just me.
oh and one last bit of proof is deus ex 1 won over 40 GOTY awards, the most ever given.
Isn't that proof that it isn't underrated?

If we're bringing out "proof" like this then I'm going to defend my favourite game ever GTA IV. It is one of the highest reviewed games of all time and it had the highest single day and seven day sales of a video game when it came out.

NOX is severely underrated

Agreed, it was my favorite game and I was upset that no one was on the multiplayer disk.

How is popularity not also a form of rating? Obviously if it's popular people think its good.

Billions of dung beetles eat crap, they can't all be wrong. Justin Beiber is supposedly popular.

Since in my opinion one of the most overrated game series ever is Gran Turismo I'm also going to add Grid as one of the most underrated games.
