PS3 version can't be that bad...

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 3:11 pm

I have today gotten my hands on the PS3 version and have played around 3 hours and all my fears were false. It not only looks great, but more importantly it plays smooth. I was very suspicious about the PS3 version simply because BS had not shown us anything, but the Creation Engine is performing admirably; barely any stutters, great soft shadows, no noticeable slowdown.

All in all, I have to say that BS came through big time. At the same time I have to say that I have not played the 360 version, but let us put these niggles behind us: it seems as if BS has finally gotten to grips with the PS3 architecture.

I am very happy that it is a smooth experience, I hate the stutters in Oblivion, but thankfully, they are gone.

To all those still waiting, I can say that you can spend these days playing past Elder Scrolls games knowing that when you have the PS3 version, you can sit back and relax!

If there are any questions that I can answer I will!

1- How is the render distance ?
2- Are there flickering shadows ?
3- It looks that great ? Can it be as good as in the demo ? or is it worst ? or is it better ?
4- How about the Anti-Aliasing and the Lighting ?
5- How about the Performance ?

Can you please answer me ? Thanks. =D

EDIT: Also, as another guy said above me.. How about the AI ? Are they dumb like in Oblivion ? Or they are better, or maybe INCREDIBLY better ?

Awesome! How far does it zoom out? And does it stay like that permanently?
You are able to zoom out quite far, and yes it stays permanently.

I'm honestly not the slightest bit worried about the PS3 version looking bad. I have confidence that it looks just as good(or pretty close) to that of the 360 and PC versions.

1- it is not mind blowing, you can clearly see grass been drawn in, at the same time it has not bothered me at all, so I do not think it is an issue.
2- Yes there are, but seeing as most light sources are candles, it sort of makes sense...but yes, they do slightly flicker, again nothing to worry about.
3- I personally think it looks slightly better; better lighting, better textures ect. But it is basically the same.
4- I am sure that some will find the AA insufficient, but honestly I truly think it looks and plays great, same for the lighting!
5- it performs ten times better than oblivion, and that is what I love the most. The thumb-sticks are also finally great to move with; a solid framerate ensures smooth gameplay!
6- the AI seem to be a bit better, but maybe its the animations. I am not that far in though, but things seem alright...

This is okay for me... I'm not such a graphic complainer... i'm more with the gameplay and storyline...

Render distance bothers me sometimes, but AA and lighting i never care that much.. but i do like to see good lighting..

The thing that i was most worried was the performance, i hated Oblivion's performace... but as you said it looks ten times better know... And thank god the thumb-sticks ain't a pain in the butt to control now !

For now i just have a few more questions.

7 - Are there "poping up objects" ? I mean, it will slowly draw a tree or is it going to at some time pop up ? I hate "poping up objects"..
8 - Again about the render distance.. You said you can see grass being drawn.. but they start to being drawn at a long distance from you, or they start to be drawn at a close distance just like Oblivion ?
9 - How about the biomes ?
10 - And last for now... Did you used Bow n Arrow at a time in the game ?? Are they more realistic now or you need to shot like 10 arrows to kill a guard just like in Oblivion ?

Thanks for you patience. =D

I have both consoles, but I am slightly sus that PS3 will be not quite as good as xbox, as why have we seen so little footage? Either way, I don't think there will be that much in it, and some areas might even be better? i.e. water effects etc

There's no footage of PC game play either. Do you think the Xbox will be better then PC's? No. Microsoft paid them to only show 360 gameplay. Please don't give your opinions on what YOU think will be better. This isn't the thread to tell us you think the Xbox is going to be better.

I know that the 360 version's graphics were cut down to allow everything for the 360 to fit on one disc... Since the PS3 can hold more data per disc I would assume that the graphics are at least the same and I would hope that bethesda did the right thing and transferred more graphics to the PS3 than the 360 due to the fact that they could. However at the very least I see no reason that they would have taken more graphics out of the ps3 version...

Well, I was reading over on the Neogaf forums that one user over there has already said that it's frozen twice on him (360, installed to HDD) cleared cache but it's taking a long time to reload..

Only time will tell (Friday!) if the PS3 is any different from the 360 version.

The PS3 has the least powerful video card of the consoles, but the most powerful processor. Your probably going to get lower quality visuals, but background calculations will be done faster. I don't have a PS3, i only go on what i've been told and saw in its hardware.

I'll say what I want, lol. and yes, I do think the xbox version will run slightly better than PS3, and like I said, I have both consoles, so no agenda at all.

ps: how do you expect people to respond the OPs thread without saying what they think will be the case. :shakehead:

... I really hate when people post things like this (no offense). To me this is just like one of those amazon ratings that say "product arrived to me broken due to shipping... so i rate this product 0/5 even though i've never actually used the product and amazon is replacing for me for free..."

There are bound to be defects sure, but this is obviously a problem that shouldn't run rampant, you your self said that ONE user reported these problems. You have no way of knowing why its freezing, for instance my 360 will freeze randomly in just about any game it has in it just because i did a personal fix for the rrod... does this happen all the time for me? NO. but it happens... all you are doing is making people worry and stress about a purchase that they've already made or are planning to make in the next few days...

7- Nope, I have witnessed no popping up at all, it is all smooth.
8- I think it is longer distance than oblivion, but then again I have to say that it does not disturb me at all.
9- ...the what?
10- Not yet used them on humans, sorry.

Again, the best thing about Skyrim is that is plays butter smooth, and to me, that is what counts!

Appart from one floating tree and some pixelated snow textures and *dammit* square-shaped shadows.. It'll be awesome.

The mods already almost locked this thread because of people like you. Your opinion about the 360 version has nothing what so ever to do with this topic. M question was if they are different what would be different about them. You saying the 360 version will be better didn't answer my question, and wasn't related to my OP at all.

well if the earlier link is accurate, I might be wrong, as that alleged PS3 footage looked excellent.

They confirmed the PS3 will be the same at the xBox in graphics and content, from what I'v seen the PS3 has a bit better draw distance. It will most likely have a few more bugs considering it wasn't made specifically for the PS3, but I'm sure most of 'em will get fixed over time, and a ton in the first day patch! So no worries, I use a PS3 too.

Agreed.

Biomes i mean, Tundra, Fall Forests, etc... Are they great ? They dynamicaly change to one for another ? Can you notice their diferences, their own characteristics ? Is the weather that great as i saw in some pics and in the demo ?

LAST Question i promise.

You said you didn't tried Bow n Arrow on humans, but what about creatures ? If you shot on of them, does it seems that Bow n Arrow is more realistic now when saying about the damage etc ?

Sorry for disturbing, lol.. this is my last question.

That is true, but the PS3's CPU is also a bit different from standard CPUs in that it was designed to also be able to take on certain graphical tasks. Therefore, the PS3 is capable of handling any graphical settings the 360 is, really, because of its strange and unique (among the gaming world) CPU. For example, the PS3's CPU can handle MLAA (morphological anti-aliasing) and leave the AA load off of the GPU plus the PS3's CPU is adept at calculating other post-processing effects. It's powerful enough and capable enough to free up the PS3's GPU to focus on fewer things. It is not a standard CPU and this is why the PS3 is, overall, capable of just better everything than the 360, really... but it's reportedly difficult to design for. That's the trade-off, but the PS3 is capable of the same graphical capabilities as the 360 and even a bit beyond because of its CPU. Essentially, the PS3 has a flexible CPU that can simultaneously play some of a GPU's traditional roles. This is something the 360's CPU and traditional PC CPUs do not do. The disparity in power is still relatively slight between the two consoles, but the PS3 is more capable in both graphical capabilities and general processing capabilities. Obviously, it's not going to be able to do it all at once, but if the 360 can handle something, chances are the PS3 can handle it just as well (graphics included) if not a bit better. It depends on how well developers take advantage of the PS3's CPU and it's 6 available SPEs.

If that footage is of the PS3 version, and I have no reason to doubt, it looks fantastic. I'll be playing on the 360, and I already know it looks great, so I am glad to see that it looks so good on the PS3 as well. PC version has nothing to worry about, so everyone should be happy, because the game is going to look great, no matter the platform!

This. It looks much better than the 360 version.

Seti18 will be pleased.
I don't see how you came to that conclusion without a direct comparison to the 360 version

Not to mention the fact that it was a recording of a TV...

That's not true. The 360 version is about 3.5 GBs. There was plenty of leftover space.

And your wording... is odd.
