Ok I'll say it... Skyrim is not that great of a game...

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 1:00 am

The dialogue has two big flaws
- There are issues with dialogue triggering. This includes overused lines in the game (arrow in the knee, etc.) and indtroductury lines repeated ("I work for Belethor in the general goods store.")

Yeah, the dialogue system (especially the background filler comments) could use some work.

----

On cave lighting... personally, I like the interior lighting in Oblivion / FO3 / Skyrim. Like CCNA, I'd prefer to be able to see the pretty caves. And, in general, where I'm going. For me, gameplay will always trump "realism" - pitch dark caves may be more real, but they'd be awful to play in. (As it is, I've used light spells and torches in Skyrim. Searching for loot and other details in the darker corners/etc.)

Dialog, that will always be weak as as long as they employ Voice Actors and have a budget for them. One of those two has to go. Or, they have to move the quest/general dialog to Text and NPCs generic utterances to Voice Acting.
This is not entirely true. Dialog is weak because Bethesda, for one reason or another can't seem to write a compelling story. Obsidian is a pretty good example of what good dialog + good voice acting can accomplish when you have the desire/talent to do it. Hopefully one day the folks at Bethesda will learn how to accomplish this. I love bethesda's games, but this has been a sore spot for them for quite a few years now.

It would have been nice to have a mix of "magically" lit caves for the tourists and some more realistic caves that were almost pitch black for the challenge seeking spelunkers. By forcing you to use either a torch or a light spell you change the game dynamic in favor of the monsters or npcs in the dungeon. This is a good thing. You can't effectively sneak with either and if you use a torch you lose the use of a shield or a more powerful weapon you could be using. By far one of the best dungeon mods for Oblivion was the Dungeons of Ivellon mod. When you first went in the dungeon was completely dark and you either lit the torches on the walls (something that bethesda should have done in skyrim from the get go) or you use some light spell or item. This type of atmosphere is NOT found in skyrim at all. I only encountered a couple of places in the entire game where i needed an additional lightsource and that was just cause i was making sure i picked up all the loot in the area. What is the point of having torches and light spells in the game if they serve no real purpose. A simple change would be to make caves without human npcs have their torches out as the default and make the npc have to light them up themselves.

I agree with all your points plus same kid voice for every child in Skyrim! Who thought it was great idea? Same voice in Fallout. Come on Bethesda tell me you used some of ur bosses child voice just to please him.

IMO, Beth are the best in the business at building stunning, totally immersive worlds. If they could only just take that next little step they are missing and have some depth and consequences along with choices that really affect the world, they would make what I feel would be the perfect game. They have ALL of the pieces and the tools necessary to do it, and they are in my opinion pretty close already. After all, it really only takes a little more voice acting and some scripting.

I think thats it in the nutshell. To gain a sense of accomplishment in the game the NPCs really need to acknowledge your deeds more in their random/generic dialogue.
They have done this sometimes, like with one of the important quests in Markarth where many of the citizens comment on it afterwards, but that is the exception rather than the rule.
Much the post-quest dialogue just isn't updated, like the guard comments about you being the newest member of the Companions fetching their mead even when you have completed the questline and become guild leader.
Sometimes they do the post-quest dialogue but it becomes mangled, like the Argonian in the Riften inn who has post-quest dialogue for two very different quests and switches randomly between like you and hate you responses whenever you speak to him after completing both.

Im thinking a little too much of the worktime was wasted on DLC preperation than main game finalisation.

Game just feels empty somehow.

I know if its your first TES youll think Skyrim is pure uncut joy delivered directly into each eyeball (hell...we all did on our first game) but youre only new once and the next one WILL dissapoint you in the same way!

All im asking is a little perspective.

Well I played all of the games since Daggerfall and find this one to be amazing. If you dont like it as much as the other titles you have avalid opinion as better is a subjective word. I would say don't let nestalgia take the place of subjectivity.

My opinion is that Bethesda got rid of all the aspects of Oblivion and Morrowind that made the game tedious to me and replaced it with fun. Are there some things that could have been done better? Yes. Could the guild lines be more in depth and a bit more challenging? Yes.

I am hoping that the DLC or expansions will add to these substantially.

So far this has been a great game and one of the best gaming experiences I have had in a long time.

But then you are severely hampering a viable gameplay feature. Players who like being sneaky would instantly flood the boards with threads complaining how Beth destroyed sneaking in Skyrim, what's the point of being sneaky if you cannot do it because you can't see a thing, only khajiits could be sneaky, I want to sneak DAMN IT!

I agree with all your points plus same kid voice for every child in Skyrim! Who thought it was great idea? Same voice in Fallout. Come on Bethesda tell me you used some of ur bosses child voice just to please him.

Oh, come on. Now you're just nitpicking. Children are so irrelevant and insignificant in this game that I couldn't possibly care about this.

Game just feels empty somehow.

You gotta be kidding me. This game is chock full of things to see and do and there is something different everywhere you turn.

I do. I wonder what other master storyteller game that these people are comparing skyrim to. Wheres the other rpgs that even come close to skyrim? If theres some out there that have a better story i bet theyre linear as can be.
i agree, and besides, the story is just one element to a game with lots of other important elements and i think bethesda game have decent stories, but the rest of what they do in their games is what really sets em apart, but not everyone gets a bethesda game, but they make great games.

Oblivion never "disappointed" me, and neither did Skyrim. So I'm not sure what your point is that you're so adamant about.

None of what the OP said is a solid criticism, maybe the guild lengths but they are better then what they were in Oblivion/Morrowind. I think Skyrim might be the best RPG of this current console Generation, well we'll see how it stacks up against KOA Reckoning.

I just would like someone to explain the point of these posts. Do you expect things to be changed? Because otherwise it just seems like a waste of time when theres 100s of other ones like it. Now a compliment to Bethesda on the other hand are much appreciated and always welcome imo.
Gee, I think so. There's future expansions which probably won't, future games which might well, and mods, mods, and more mods. And I like the game. Bravo, Bethesda. But no game is perfect, and yes I am hoping for improvements.

They still manage to make great games regardless such as Uncharted 3 and the Metal Gear Solid series.
