Why We Are Mad: The Thread

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 1:06 pm

As much as I love mmos and The Elder Scrolls universe, this may or may not end pretty. Pretty much every mmo other than Eve Online or WOW has flopped shortly after release. I really hope Bethesda does not screw this up and if it looks good I may even try it out.

There isn't a single released screenshot that shows anything hovering over anyone's head, question-mark-shaped or otherwise.
have you true reading them? Might be in there. And I am talking about the GI scans. Not the released screens for all to see.

The Ebonheart Pact between the Dunmer and the Argonians is mind-blowingly stupid, if anything the Dunmer would be FORCING the Argonians to fight at the time because they were slaves to the Dunmer, and even if they "abolished" slavery for the puposes of fighting a common ally, don't you think that'd be mentioned SOMEWHERE when the Argonians were complaining about slavery in Morrowind which takes place AFTER THIS GAME?!

Morrowind takes place hundreds of years after the events of The Elder Scrolls Online. You don't think things would change in that time?
You're also assuming ALOT. We hardly know anything about the lore of the game, but you've decided that you know everything about it.
This game isn't going to be released until NEXT YEAR. People need to stop talking about it like its the end of the world. Really, people need to get over themselves. Zenimax knows A LOT more about the game than you.

Okay, let me rephrase my statement.

Instead of "huge amount of info", lets say that there is a significant list of confirmed information about the MMO available out there.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link, so I'll just say there's a sizeable summary on the Neogaf site.

Mods, if its illegal for me to mention any outside site for info, please forgive me and delete my post.

There's one preview article. That's it.

That article has next-to-no information when you think about the scope of the game. I mean, we don't even know how combat works, beyond the vaguest of descriptions.

The fact that it's not being developed by Bethesda Game Studios is enough to make me discredit it. I mean, the same team has worked on ALL of the previous games, with Todd Howard having significant involvement in the making of each one (with only the exception of TES: Arena, which let's be honest, who really plays that now?). As far as I'm concerned, an Elder Scrolls game that has no direct involvement of Todd Howard might as well not be an Elder Scrolls game. The man has practically crafted the entire series.

Now, I'm sure someone will argue that since he didn't work on the first one, I'm totally wrong, but seriously... http://oyster.ignimgs.com/wordpress/www.ign.com/9109/2011/08/Argonian_Arena.jpg is what the Argonians looked like in Arena. Point is it's not exactly part of the series that we take seriously.

My other complaint about TESO is simply that http://cdnstatic.gamesas.com/bethblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/screen610.jpg DOES NOT LOOK LIKE AN ELDER SCROLLS GAME. Enough said.

He crapped on Arena and then proceeded to herald Mr. Howard. That doesn't fly with me. Sorry.

Come on you guys, if TESO looks like WoW then close the book and keep playing Skyrim and, of course, wait for the next TES game by Beth. If the mmo fails, nothing will happen at Beth(they are doing their own separate thing)

Anyways, all this overreacting is just pure insanity. Do you guys have stocks in ZeniMax Inc?

Zenimax holds the nuts on the franchise's trademark and all that legal stuff, doesn't it?

It isn't that hard to see them thrashing the lore if the game turns out to be a howling success. These are the same guys who sued Minecraft for using the word "Scrolls" in a game title.

A lot can change in 800 years. Hell, a lot can change in 50.

I don't see English people moaning about William the Conquerer anymore... Why would Argonian slaves in Morrowind talk about events long passed?

You obviously don't live near Quebec, or in the Southern United States, do you?

That aside, personally, the MMO market is dying. Everyone looks and points at how well WoW, instead of realizing that they're hemorrhaging players at about 1 million a year. LoTRO and DDO from Turbine had to switch to a (at the time) dreaded Free to Play Model. Guild Wars had to make full game 'expansions' rather than basic content to keep making money.

The big issue with most Fantasy MMOs is the perpetuity that it must have. They must keep making more and more stuff for it to keep the money flowing. But having grown up with old fashioned Fantasy Novels (long before they were 'cool') I can tell you that all Fantasy have stories, and stories have a beginning, a middle and an end. MMO's cannot end, EVER. Personally, I'd rather have a well crafted story with all three phases, with maybe a chat system to talk to my friends, if that, then an MMO.

And I've been playing MMOs on and off since EverQuest. I still have a WoW account, I play from time to time.

I don't think that the mmo market is dying. I personnally believe that the market for WoW and his clones is dying. This concept is so worn out that it doesn't attract many players anymore. Its time for some innovation, something new.

However: TESO will not be this game, since its just another copy of the wow-game-concept.

Honestly I think the next big thing is going to be to do with MOBA style games. I don't think games like GW2 really bring anything new enough to the table to boost the market.

You speak for yourself and only yourself. No one voted you as spokesman of this island, chief.

He speaks for me as well. So it's fine that the title says "We" and not "I".
And from reading opinions around the internet, he speaks for many people who are too disappointed over the announcement and uninspired to come here and speak for themselves.

The OP defenitely speaks for more than just himself. I am very disapointed in this announcement. It reminds me of the South Park episode where they [censored] Indiana Jones by putting aliens in the series. I would have rather seen this studio make a spinoff type game like FO-New Vegas, or have this studio work on DLC. I would have loved to see a new TES game in a year or two based on the new engine and made by a separate company than Beth.

Correct me if Im wrong, but the combat will be completely different. The exploration will be largely different. The skills/leveling will be completely different. Looting and picking up items will be different. The art style is obviously different, almost to the point where it isnt even recognizable as a TES game..... So what about this game is TES? The story? The location? Everything else, if I am not mistaken, seems to be completely removed or different. That saddens me. Hell, lets throw Darth Vader and Hitler in to the game and call it TES simply because it takes place on Tamriel.

I really wish they had just added a co-op option to Skyrim or the next game....that seems like a much more exciting experience to me anyway. The only exciting part about this game is that it will include the entire continent of Tamriel, which we havent seen in a very long time and I have always dreamt about. Im extremely dissapointed though that this is the way they decided to do it. Couldnt they have done the same with a singleplayer game like Skyrim? Release one land mass after another via DLC until the whole continent was available? God...just dreaming about it makes me ecstatic....but then sad....Maybe one day

And most of the people here defending TES Online are probably just looking to stroke their egos with an argument, like most of the bethesda forum members. Dont take what they say too seriously.

In a way, TES is OUR game. We have been here since day one, loyally purchasing and playing each addition to the series. I think it is perfectly understandable that we are concerned, worried, upset, or even downright angry. We dont want to see our beloved game destroyed by silly ideas. We have a right to voice our opinion, just as supporters of the TES:Online have the right to come here and beg for guns in Skyrim, TES motion pictures, and TES MMO games.

Do you mean Umrahel that bethesda has nothing to do with TESO????? because i find doubtful that Zenimax will be working in such a huge project based on TES universe and Bethesda is not contributing.....anyways your statement is valid the main reason why most of us are here is because the great joy we’ve had playing Bethesda single player RPG games and curiously enough the very same reason why many TES fans like me are reluctant with the idea of an TES MMO. Thanks for your replay....
It is not unlikely that Zenimax Online Studios, who is making TES:O, has been gathering information about the TES universe from Bethesda Gaming Studios' developers. Both studios are part of Zenimax and sharing of information and knowledge is common within a larger corporation. But ZOS not taking BGS developers away from BGS, they have their own team who is making this MMO. The BGS developers will continue to work on their own projects, such as Dawnguard.

I'm upset because if this piece of crap is canon, all of my hundreds of hours into TES games will be worth NOTHING because they'll retcon EVERYTHING I'VE LEARNED!

Also, to people defending restricting content on PURPOSE from the players to be SOLD as an expansion later. There is TONS of outlets they could go rather than restricting ALREADY FINISHED content for later.
  • Going to Akavir
  • Large event like WoW Cataclysm or Wrath of the Lich King
  • Going to Atmora
