I don't want anymore Fallout - I want more of whatever Fallout 3 is.
So in essence your agree that Fallout 3 didn't quite "get right" the spirit of the series. I think most would agree that FNV is closer to the original vibe.
Fallout New Vegas is bland. The story does not track well. You are shot in the head (OK.), but if I'm just a simple courier, a little guy, then why would I all of a sudden try and be the biggest bad ass in the world ? - Seems to me that this story is like a cut and paste job gone wrong. Nothing in the story feels connected to anything else and I don't feel connected to the character either (at level 14). Fallout New Vegas feels - pointless, or better yet, plot less.
Being connected to the character comes from choosing your “role.” It develops in relation to the choices that you make concerning the various factions.
That is what Fallout New Vegas feels like, a big mod. It absolutely, 100%, lacks the quality, character, depth of plot, continuity of story, and immersion of any of Bethesda game I've ever played. I'm a little disappointed, yes, but more than anything I'm just bored with New Vegas.
When you write, "absolutely 100%" you make it sound as if that’s a fact while it’s entirely subjective.
#1) - this game is WAY TOO MUCH RPG.
I'm bored to death with talking to the NPC's, especially since they have such lousy dialogue.
You do realize that many will not take you seriously after that statement. We play RPG's b/c they are ahem...RPG's
There is truly no opportunity to be tense or frightened of what is around the corner in New Vegas…
The subways, buildings, vaults of Fallout 3 were TENSE and the action was GOOD. Fallout New Vegas has about as much action as a retirement home. When the powder ganger surprised me, you know, I was so happy because I thought this game was going to really be something to watch your back over, but that was the only tiny bit of adrenaline I've had and I'm on level 14. Why are all the buildings and "levels" so easy to waltz right in and out of? No raiders trying to kill me, nothing to be worried about at all.
What difficulty level did you play on? The consensus is that FNV is more challenging than F3. God-mode came very early in F3. If I remember correctly, early on in F3 after getting some sort of powerful plasma rifle from Rivet City the challenge became rather trivial. Everything turned into a pile of green goo at the push of a button. I'm not finding FNV on the hard setting to be as easy.
Seriously, there is no action in this game at all. So don't worry about hardcoe mode. If there was any chance of getting shot then I guess it would be cool.
hardcoe mode is simply an added feature that some role players might like. I use it but am a bit ambivalent. It's slightly more immersive but whatever--it’s no big deal.
The gist I got from reading your opinion is that you either don't like or are not used to a more old school role-playing vibe. It's true that we don't see too many mainstream RPG’s today embracing that philosophy and what is more common are hero archetypes, narratives lacking ambiguity, gobs of unchallenging combat and/or repetitive exploring.
Sounds like Mass Effect 2 might be more suited for your style. I enjoyed it, played it numerous times on insanity but it wasn’t really an overly difficult game. I think where your argument falls flat regarding combat is that it's never really too tactically challenging even on the hardest setting. ME2 (a hybrid RPG) probably came the closest to nailing it but it certainly wasn't FPS hard--and that's as it should be because we predominantly don't play these game for their 1:1 combat accuracy.
