Anyone else prefer Fallout 3 to New Vegas

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 8:11 am

I loved, and I mean absolutely loved the unmodded 360 version of Fallout 3. Also, this is my first time visiting the forums since the release of New Vegas. And as of this moment I have not purchased the game (won't have the extra cash for another couple weeks...well I could buy it now but I have my eye on other things) so I cannot weigh in on this particular subject.

But I must say that with each negative comment I have read about New Vegas it makes me want to play it more and more.

Except for the bugs, but I'ved lived with that before and I guess I'll be doing it again. No skin off my back.

Also, I'm sure someone is going to take offence to this, but in my eyes Fallout titles can do no wrong. Haven't played a Fallout game I didn't love (Tactics included). So I'm sure I'll be enamored with New Vegas.

I played Fallout 3 the other day because I "missed it". I like the world better in Fallout 3. I like the improvements in New Vegas.

This may not seem obvious but after reading some of these posts I've come up with an idea. If you prefer Fallout 3 to Fallout: New Vegas, why not just go play Fallout 3?

What if you like NV plenty, you just like 3 more and have played it to death and back?

Sounds like a person in that situation might be somewhat screwed. I doubt Obsidian is going to change Fallout: New Vegas to Fallout 3: In Vegas.

I agree completely. I could never figure out how anyone survived in FO3. They didn't farm, after 200 years all of the preserved food would have been long-gone, and they didn't trade. Heck, it seemed like most of them had no contact with the outside world at all. For all intents and purposes they were still living in vaults. Vaults made of incomplete storytelling rather than concrete and steel.

Also you had places like the those abandoned stores and stuff that where just full of food and stuff and nobody scaved it yet. XD

That was one thing that kinda bugged me about Fallout 3...I didn't want to seemingly be the first person to loot every location in the game.

A few more locations could have been empty, but eh...that was a minor inconvenience for me because I understand the full spectrum of players a game developer must cater to.

I agree but we see the finished game in F3, which probably won't happen for quite some time for NV.

Really? Because I can name ALOT of bugs and glitches on Fallout 3, on and out of DLCs.

Nah, New Vegas is definitely much, much, muuuuch buggier than Fallout 3. Much!

In my experience, on an offline 360, anyway.

Once again the FO3 fans is mugged and leave the NV section because they have find out they are just TES fans.....

Anyone who said DC ruin is good definitely didn't explore all of it. Washington Park and the area which you save the Riley's Ranger is the only "decent part"; every other part is just swarm with enemy and that's about it. Metro is nothing since they are all one way tunnels.

Mmmm, I think FO3 had better overall content, but I like the crafting and stuff from NV. I was more than a bit peeved to realize how small and linear NV actually is, with virtually nothing in the way of freely explorable random locations. Especially after all the hype on how NV had more locations than FO3...yeah, there's more map markers, but they aren't anything but map markers. Many of them don't even have mob spawns. Hell half the map is walled off and unused.

Fallout 3 was massive and well fleshed out, with tons of optional content. Fallout New Vegas is point A to Point B and if you try to deviate from that you will run into mobs way above you because you're on rails and that's that. And don't worry about those empty, boarded buildings, the lack of underground, the few one hall two room dungeons, just stay on those rails and like it.

Interesting story, I like a lot of the new mechanics, but the world itself is pretty disappointing in my opinion. I like NV well enough, just wish it had been more.

I don't understand what your first sentence means, but... I explored every inch of the DC ruins. Every single inch. Multiple times with multiple characters. It was by far and away my favourite experience of the whole game, and more enjoyable than anything I've done in (the nonethless very fine) New Vegas.

Did you find the Ray Bradbury house? Or the clothes shop? What about sightseeing on the Mall? The Behemoth in Takoma Park? The booby-trapped preacher? None of this did anything for you, huh?

Isn't it funny how different people like different things?

From a both Fallout series and TES series fan,

I feel that FNV, except it not being as open-world as FO3, is kinda sloppy and lacks content as if hastily done.

so FO3 all the way for me :)

I do not prefer one over the other. Not unless I'm in the mood to play one and not the other. But then, that's not even limited to Fallout. Some days, I prefer to play some other game, maybe even on the PS2 or the DS that I've got laying around.

Ray Bradbury hose isn't exactly part of "DC ruin dungeon" and no, it doesn't really do a creepy inbreed cannibal story justice because it is too dam short.

Clothes shop? really? better than *any* shop in Vegas?

I did mention the Mall is good.

Takoma factory is poorly lay out despite it is "secret dungeon".

The booby-trapped preacher is not part of "DC ruin dungeon"; it is nice, but should a game be judge on *one* musing location? Or should I compare it with Chance's Map?

Downtown DC Ruin just isn't excellent dungeons like other peoples claim; Mall and area which the Statesman Hotel is in is good, but no Dojon La Grandiose.

I'm really into the capital wasteland, but I did enjoy New Vegas. I mean I don't yet own the game, but I'm borrowing from a friend who's X-box red ringed on him. The best thing I enjoyed about the Capital wasteland over the Mojave Wasteland was the endless gloominess that was portrayed by a direct nuclear fallout.
Following? I liked the factions that were in Fallout 2 and not in Fallout 3 like the NCR, Great Khans, & Caesar's legion.

The Vegas strip was an interest point for me, I liked taking the Lucky 38 for myself, and I liked having a reputation, I don't yet know how the companion system works out, but I've seen teaser trailers and game play demos before the game's release. I haven't yet played hardcoe mode, but I'm looking forward to it after my first go-around for the story-line.

So in comparison to Fallout 3 to Fallout: New Vegas, I like them both the same. But I like the Capital Wasteland better (Can't really determine my interest of NV because I havn't gotten the chance to explore through it all. But I do like it aswell.

i have to jump on the boat with the OP. The thing that first let me down was the fact that it almost looked like FO3 and i know you guys know what i mean by that. And also as said above me . Yes there were many more locations, but does a stick figure lean-to shack really count as a location ? That just has maybe two ammo boxes and a first-aid kit ?IMO they added to many markers that ultimitly made the map seem really small.

When i picked up a new quest late game it was so easy to finish that quest in like 10 min. Because there were at least 3 map markers within and inch of where i had to go. So that made me just stop fast traveling all together unless it was all the way on the other side of the map. And i cant believe im saying this but longer dungon runs would of been better (i say it this way because i was getting burnt out on dungon runs. I really liked playing outside for a change . But after about 5 caves i knew they all would be like that. Devs can get into a state or repeating things to much some times . Except mirlark cave that was awsome IMO . I loved the scuba diving :goodjob: hope there is more underwater quests. Just add in a harpoon gun and a few mutated fish. Maybe a shark thats now just a wall of teeth. I dont want to even get started on the condition it was released in . I'm not going there. (not yet at least). Because i always review anything i spend money on and we all get that right. But sadly alot of people just dont understand that.

Its sad that most devs seem like they dont even care (beyond the $$$) or put any pride into a game. To even polish a games anymore. I feel like now that im paying a dev to beta test their game for them. IMHO WOW hurt the game industry for the gammer. Because DEVS now knew we had more money to spend. And its blinded them to the one thing thats most important their fan base. And now just release unfinished games saying we will just fix/patch it after its out. Well enough of that . Its the one reason i just started playing FO3 tonight again . But the bonus for me is i totaly forgot to play some DLC,the pit and broken steal yet. So im out of here guys and im headed to the pit. I was thinking i might do that on purpose for now on. buy some DLC and just not play it all . Save some for a later date..

Last i would like to thank the OP for having the guts to post a topic like this . Its nice to know there are still some that will voice how they feel. Instead of keeping quiet ( so you dont anger the devs or something ) .Keep it up OP .

Im about to make my own reveiw soon and from experiance i taake screenshots of the things i talk about. I got tired of people saying "no screenshot it diddnt happen" many have cursed the day they have said that . It tends to leave them very quiet when there is a screenshot now . LOL . yep FO3 here i come :bolt:

Hey, you can like or dislike any or every one of the examples plucked from the top of my head, though I'm a little confused as to what you mean by "DC ruin dungeon", I was just talking about things to find in the DC ruins, don't really understand why some of them don't count, but anyway... I was primarily taking issue with your statement that no-one who'd explored DC fully could possibly like it. I did and I do. Opinions are subjective things, y'know? Downtown DC "isn't an excellent dungeon" in your opinion. In my opinion, it's bloody brilliant, amazing, wonderful, marvellous, fantastic, extraordinary...

I like peanut butter and hate Marmite. Others will feel the opposite. Some will like both, some neither. None of us is any more correct than any other. This is not a question of factual accuracy, but of taste. However, for me to posit that anyone who liked Marmite simply hadn't eaten enough of it to form a valid opinon would be factually inaccurate.

To jump from the personal to the universal is always folly.

Do you see?

maybe in terms of quests and gameplay fallout 3 was less buggy, but fallout 3 was not less buggy in it's internal construction (14 memory leaks :bonk: ), after fo3 was fully patched i still had a hard time playing it due to ctd every 20 or so minutes.

just wait on a few more patches, it's only been a month. if your on the computer, then learn how to make the game play more stable on your system by tweaking the fallout.ini file. i haven't had a problem with NV since the last patch came out... well after they patched the last patch that came out haha.

Do you see?

NO, not really.

There is the matter of personal opinion, but there is also subjective assessment you can do to see if Downtown DC Ruin is *good* or *okay* dungeon.

For example, most Downtown DC metro is a one way tunnel; you can argue a lot of "classic dungeon only have on entry and exit, but you can't deny the lack of divergence in most of them.

Takoma Factory is *poor* because: a ) it is *rail road* and make up of large unoccupied space; b ) right across the river, is the Nuker Cola factory which is ten times better (get keys from robot, take employee badge to avoid robot being hostile and passing the flooded factory floor).

Nuker Cola factory did not make Dojon La Grandiose because it lack of something like the "Legend of Star" quest chain to tide things up.

I think there is some ring of truth in that sentence. More of the same just doesn't cut it anymore - I'm fairly sure that even if NV was made even more like Fallout 3, people initially being all pumped up with Fallout 3 would still like it better and be somewhat disappointed with New Vegas. "Well, it's nice - but F3 dd it better." just as it is said now by some. Personally I think New Vegas is better in every possible way, but I also think it came out too soon after F3 and is much too similiar to it in its core.
