Are women equally represented in Skyrim?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 7:48 am

Gritty realism is something I truly enjoy in games, books and films and would like to see more of. Unfortunately that would mean that in any kind of medieval style setting Women would be woefully underepresented by modern standards. I've no real opinion on the song, I've never even heard it, but in the Skyrim game itself women are very well represented, too well perhaps.

Modern games and films are almost obsessed with trying to depict women in an unnatural way in order to make them equal with men and its just silly to me. I love a strong female character in a story, as long as they are not robbed of their femininity and just turned into a male character with a male personality and male characteristics but with a pretty smile and boobs. Ripley from Alien is a great example of a strong female character who doesn't lose her femininity. Game of Thrones has a fair few strong female characters who retain their femininity too. Good stuff.

I used to complain about not enough women in Skyrim, then...(Wait for it) "I TOOK AN ARROW TO THE KNEE..." What a silly post.

So let me get this straight...someone wrote their own song. You didn't like it and asked him to change the lyrics because you have some paranoia about how sixism may or may not be in a "video game"?

Maybe write your own song, with your own thoughts, and your own feelings?

This is ridiculous.

I'm 64, and my wife would tell you that I will/can defend a woman's right to be at the forefront just like a man. I worked for the federal government for 40 years, and went to a lot of training over the years that supports equal rights for all - and I supervised women for at least 30 of those years.

However, I think at times like this, we should remember this is a game, not real life - so I can't find fault with Bethesda with what they did or didn't do to support women.

And although you're entitled to your opinion, threads like these really serve no purpose - my opinion - IN A GAME SETTING; after all, games are someone's explanation how they see things in an "other-worldly setting." And that interpretation is going to clash with many people's beliefs.

Now, we go to real life and I'll support you 110%.

E
I agree, although I understand where the OP is coming from, if you're that passionate about the issue then put your energy towards real life issues not fictitious ones.

The equal roles of men and women in TES games I have always found to break immersion. The women speak the same words the men do, have the same reasons for doing things the men do.

Also no sixuality. The everyday life of a man and woman contains sixual tension, possibly some flirting, men and women behave very differently when only around people of their same six than they do around the opposite six.

Men and women are different in wonderful ways, and this drive for digital equality in videogames has rendered those differences to just having different voice actors and character art.

The female Blade was a man. She does not behave or think like a woman in any way. Its as if they wrote the lines and story for the character before they even knew what six she was going to be. Thats not to say that she couldn't have been just as strong of a female character, but men behave brutish and make aggressive decisions that few females would make. This behavior does not make you a stronger person, its just a trait of aggressive men. Aggressive women behave completely differently.

So what about the wonderful traits, mannerisms, and behavior the common woman? There are few examples in skyrim. They exist, but it results in the game feeling like there are only 5 real women on the entire continent.

The Nords are a medieval based, conservative thinking, racist bloodthirsty bigot vikings. Gender equality doesn't really fit their agenda, yknow?

Clearly Bethesda is being racist against white people by making them all racists in their game.

"if you know any true sons and daughters of skyrim" -any stormcloak supporter, they all ask you to send sons and daughters of skyrim to the stormcloaks, women are represeted just fine in skyrim. as a man let me say those who attacked the idea of women being represneted are stupid  (even though it was just a song :whistling: )

Should take this topic to Jerry Springer. Could you imagine a woman on springer complaining about women in video games then they bring Tod Howard out and they are like "whatevah whatevah I do what I want!" Then they start brawlin on stage. Then Hulk Hogan breaks in and clotheslines Tod and legdrops the chick then rips his shirt off and starts posing.

Honestly I am confused by your argument. The game is set in a medieval setting where women do not have a great importance. Bethesda has actually done the opposite and made many a hero and JARLS girls. I feel like your trying to make the game a women driven world, which in fact it could never be. Skyrim is run by the Nords who value strength and bloodthirtyness. That does not fit the role of your typical women, although not everyone. Your argument is like saying the constitution was sixist, which although it didn't include women it wasn't. Women just didn't play a huge role in the lives of the ruling power in that time. This is not a modern day game, it is set in a past time, so past experiences take over.

Seeing as gender inequality is not an issue in society anymore

This is the single most ignorant thing I've read on the internet. Thank you. It's always nice to know you can see new lows each and every day. As a progressive this couldn't make me more depressed.

it doesn't matter where words come from unless they are inherently sixist.

While I understand etymology might not be everybody's strong suit, you're clearly not understanding how "mankind" isn't inherently sixist. The word came to be during a time when women were not considered equal. Think about it, it's not very complicated.

And I'm sorry for speculating LOLS LULZ,

You're losing me...

obviously if I don't have a degree in feminism I must be an idiot, can't just speculate on things unless I'm widely knowledgable on the subject.

That's not why you're an idiot, no. You can speculate all you want but what does that prove? I like to speculate on the effects of a healthy diet on the mind but it doesn't mean anything unless I've done any research.

And guess what, if there was a thread about hot mucly guys soiciety wouldn't have a problem with it

Really now. Ok. See, because I'd call those people superficial and call them out for exactly the same thing. Whose society are we talking about here?

nevermind that men have self-esteem too, they were in charge for hundreds of years they can deal with it.

Actually, I think it's most men's complete lack of self-esteem which leads them to their more misogynistic behaviour.

If you really get upset over people saying mankind or actor not actress maybe you should stop reading hidden meanings into everything.

Oh I was born upset, friend. But trust me, there's no hidden meanings out there. They're very loud and clear. And if there were anything "hidden", why is it in hiding? Is there something there which needs to be hidden?

There is MAN and woMAN. Two kinds of Man, so Mankind. I fail to see the issue with it

That seems more your problem than mine. You know, "I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you" comes to mind here.

i think this sums up everything perfectly. i mean, im a man, i dont particularly care about women getting more equality (who doesnt enjoy being the dominate gender?), and i dont think skyrim is sixist. but this? this is just pure ignorance.

Thank you for at least chipping one chunk of misanthropy off my cold, black heart. This thread is one of the least encouraging bits of humanity I've been a part of recently.

The problem with these kinds of suggestions are they are usually laced with man-bashing by angry illogical feminists and that only women deserve equality.

Let me give you an example in the gaming world. Maeiv Shadowsong dying after killing Illidan. She then said something about not being able to live without her prey anymore, and so she died or something. This made some feminists angry because they somehow connected this to the implication that women cannot live without men, so they call it sixist. If that is not crazy enough, they are completely blinded by their own rage that they forgot Maeiv is actually a strong female npc, chasing Illidan, a man, who is running away from her.

So why even bother listening to special interest groups who keep touting equality, yet only help women? Equality should be for everyone, why only women? It's almost like you live in your own paranoid world where you think everyone is against you and everything is done to slight you. That doesn't mean the devs of Skyrim are sixist. It means you all like to get angry for no reason, and should seek professional help.

Let's take a look at your post. Your thread title asks, are women equally represented.

You are upset that the dragonborne song did not include women in it.

Then, you say that as you play the game, there is a strong npc in the past named Gormlaith Golden-Hilt, and that there are some women in Skyrim that work harder than the men.

So the fact that there is a good representation of women in the game in the form of Gormlaith Golden-Hilt and many women who hold important positions in Skyrim, is completely negated simply because the Dragonborne song doesn't have women in it? Do you see the problem here? Now you think having women in a song is more important then actual strong female npcs in the game.

Oh, and this is pure gold, you even had to coin the term Lazy Stupid Racist Alchoholics for the men. You obviously have no respect for men in real life, and you act surprised why you get such backlash from the male population. Your post is already laced with man-bashing and you are ignorant to it.
Further evidence of your low opinion of men is that you seem to be ok with this sixist stereotype that only men can be lazy stupid racist alcoholics and women can't. In the name of equality, why is there no equal representation of lazy stupid racist alcoholics who are women? Why is it always men?

The reason is the same why there is no equal representation of women in anything. You cannot have everything 50/50 for the sake of it. It's illogical in a gaming world in terms of lore and story.

To be honest I play the game for what it is and it never actually occured to me to think of the game as being possibly sixist, racist or anything else until I saw this thread. I really can't see how it is either like it's been said there are female characters equal in position from beggar to Jarl in Skyrim. In TES lore there have been emperors and empresses that have been good and bad (I recently bothered to read "a brief history of the empire" in game). I think if there had been purposeful sixism it would be noticeable to more people.

Exactly. There is already good representation of women in the game. But apparently we are all wrong because the dragonborne song doesn't include women.

It's unfortunate that women's rights classes seem more interested in misandry, making men the enemy. Not sure how trashing the opposite six makes your life better.

I deleted some posts. They were not "awesome".

Personally I think there is good representation of women in the game. But then again, although sometimes the way females are treated, or merely attired, in a game might make me roll my eyes slightly, I just can't get worked up over it. It's improved so much over the years anyway.

I should clarify - I am a female gamer. :)

Then explain. The way I see it there are two genders, male and female, man and woman. Man being common to both words makes mankind a good word to describe them as a whole. I guess I could see someone having an issue with the use of mankind if they are looking at man and woman as two completely separate words. But I see them as the same word, with a slight change in one to indicate gender. Would you prefer humankind?

The Leader of SKyrim is the Jarl of SOlitude, whom took the throne after her husband died. Yes the Leader of SKyrim is a woman.

I think you are simply overanolysing a song that was made with strict guidelines. When TOdd Howard requested the Skyrim song, we wanted a song that made sense in Norse, rhymed and could be translated into English and still Rhyme. I dont think this had anything to do with women vs Men and more the difficulty of making the song in a way that would sound and feel epic.

I'm a girl and i honestly don't really mind it at all. Skyrim is set in our equivalent of the medieval days, a time when both genders had different taboos. men did not cook, and Women did not fight. It actually makes me feel more immersed when i hear comments about how strange it is for a Woman to be out and about. Although in Skyrim case, i can see how both genders would be a bit more merged. It's a harsh land where only the strong can survive. A Woman's husband has a very real chance of not returning home every time he goes out, and the Woman must be able to provide for the family in that case.

I think all this PC stuff is a bunch of crap, people are way too sensitive these days. i laughed my ass off when i went into Caesar's legion's camp, "This is no place for a Woman, go back to the kitchen"

Isn't it interesting, though, that the word "woman" is nothing more than "man" with a prefix? As though it suggests that women are just a part of men? Maybe women are a rib of men!

In western countries, equality is the norm, maybe I'm just stupid or you misunderstood me.

Woman has the word man in it, Wo-MAN, MAN, MAN-kind, same as the reason dog is the default not [censored].
Man is just the main word for the race of man, if that is considered sixist then so is calling someone an actor not Movie-Star

Speculation much?, Besides, I was talking about how (rightly so) critiquing women on their looks is considered poor form, yet calling men weedy or ugly isn't as taboo
