Did you guys hear? Kinect will change your gameplay experien

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 2:37 pm

Look, I like Kinect. It's convenient, not having to open the favorites menu. It isn't drastic, but it's pretty nice, being able to change your weapons without using menus.

personally, why not just call it Voice Support, and allow the headset to work as opposed to the Kinect - much better for Bethesda imo due to the multi-platform thing

correct me if I'm wrong tho - I haven't whipped out my xbox headset in Ages~ since way before Skyrim, And fallout!
Because of the Microsoft exclusivity deal. Its more than likely that the contract had some fine print that said Bethesda couldn't add voice support to the PS3 version. What svcks is that only the PS3 version of the game doesn't have it, because its already been implemented on PC as well. But with the PS3 numerous technical glitches, they should focus on fixing that first, before adding new gimmicky features. I feel like voice controls have very little impact, IMO.

Doesn't the title just piss you off? I hate having to see "Better with Kinect" every time I search up Skyrim on the internet. Saying shouts out loud isn't going to give you a lifechanging experience. God, am I sick of hearing about Kinect. Who else agrees?

I have to say that I disagree with this, I use a lot of shouts that I didn't before as I don't have to hit the main menu, then the magic menu, then the shouts menu to change my shouts. It makes a huge difference, ever been in a dungeon and hit the etheral form to aviod the swinging blade traps? Then go into the next room to throw fire breath at a high level dragur gang only to have etheral form kick off, because you forgot to change back to your favorite shout? Well with the Kinect Voice option, now I don't have to worry about it, all I have to do is say "Etheral Form" or hit the shout/powers button and say "FEIM" (or as many words as I need), then I can say "ally wait" run through the trap, hit the switch on the other side say ally follow, then when I see that pack of dragur, I just say "fire breath" or hit the shout button and say "YOL" (or as many words as I need). It is great... I don't have to stop the action as I run up the stairs to the tower, and I want to us Unrelenting Force to blow the bandit archer off the battlements. So yes it has completely changed the game play experince for me. Also, I can set a loot limit based on weight to value ratio's and when I search a corpse or any container, I just say "loot items" and it only takes the items that meet the criteria I set. To change from Axe to Bow, I can simply say "equip bow" and my charachter brings the bow up. I assume that you havn't actually tried the Kinect Voice commands yet, because the completely change the game and I am using things that I used to never use, because the took too long to get to.

You're headset has voice recognition software built into it?

Anyway, it doesn't bother me. They're trying to push their product as hard as they can without begging. If anything it just makes me chuckle, and then I move on.

good point
as beth probably couldn't make voice recognition software for skyrim, but if they did, it would be more beneficial for them :/

for me its kinda made skyrim more fun. i made a character just so i could test out saying the shouts. and before the kinect was out for skyrim i really didn't use shouts at all now i use them a lot. and plus i just like saying the shouts in the dragon langage. i think its fun learning how to say each word in dragon.

the only problem i have with it is some time my mome will accedently save my game or when i'm in the menue i'll be in say book and then all the suden i'm in weapons. stuff like that but other than that i love it.

I have that problem too, my kids like to watch me play sometimes, and they will be yelling the shouts... like saying "hit them with firebreath, Dad" then wham.... they have done it town a couple of times too, or made me do it.... like asking what that shout I used was called.... and then I answer them, then I pay the fine... LOL. It is still fun to use, and I too use the shouts a lot more than I used to.

That's funny because i actually enjoy the game more with Kinect. I honestly can't see why it would bother you? Just doesn't make sense to me.

I live in Texas and my kinect can't pick up Clear Skies. That last word is hard to say

Lok vaar Kor.
Trust me, saves you soooo much time.
I think they built it in so much you /have/ to learn the dragon tongue if you fancy using it :lmao:

The problem with speech recognition is that it still needs a lot of work. Get any SR package like Dragon Naturally Speaking and you have to "teach" it to understand your accent and then it still gets it wrong quite frequently. One of the biggest reasons for this is that you can identify a single word in 3 different sentences and they will all sound different. Contextual inflections in words, words like "anyone" being interpreted as "onion" due to accent and so on. Just try using one of those SR packages and be prepared to split your sides laughing at the results. You spend so much time proof reading and correcting mistakes, you may as well have typed it all anyway.

When it comes to games, you have to remain calm or it won't understand you, trust me, it's difficult to do in a firefight when your health is going down fast. Just think how many times you've hammered the keys, trying to stay alive. I still remember years ago where I was screaming at the PC because I tried a SR package to play a game and it didn't recognise half of what I was saying, mainly because I was shouting the commands too often in the heat of battle.

Give it another 15 or 20 years of serious work before it will be useful to the mass market rather than a fringe group.

Honestly, I understand your skepticism but kinect for Skyrim is brilliant and it's not just a gimmick,It helps a whole bunch. Quicksave is an invaluable tool ;)

I laugh at it if anything, and laugh at Todd even though he called those things 'gimmicks'.

He doesn't have any control over Kinect marketing and PR.

Well I don't mind it. Sure it's a gimmick that doesn't add much. But if it adds something they have to right to say it's better with it.

I do mind it. First it promotes kinect being something special when it only is a mic. Why can't I use my mic to use voice commands? If Beth would add eyefinity support but not nvidia surround I would rage even though I have eyefinity. If you could swing your hand to get your character to swing a sword I would be ok with that.

Even if you have kinect that doesn't automaticcally guarantee you get use voice commands.

I used too be an Kinect player like you. Then I bashed my knee off of a table corner.

I used too have a girlfriend like you. Then she saw me playing Skyrim on the Kinect.

Why would she want too? So she can wave her arms around infront of a TV screen like an idiot? Now it's even worse because you can do that and now yell at it at the same time.

Well.

I will talk to the game when it can talk back to me. I'm quite happy fiddling with menus and buttons for now (thanks cubase), and I'd only end up swearing at the thing if it got me killed.

Kinect would be awesome in Skyrim if it were to run Milo tech. :D

I like Kinect for Skyrim the equip commands are much easier by voice than using the menu imo also quick save and quick load

I "borrowed" my niece's kinect to try out Skyrim out of curiosity, and I have to say that the thing is utter garbage. I took it off after half an hour. It really is a chore talking to your TV and waving your arms around. It is so much better to just press a button. Maybe I belong to an older generation that cannot appreciate the thing, but for me the point of controllers is to be as un-intrusive to the gaming experience as possible. Kinect is the exact opposite of that principle. Total immersion breaker for me.

You can use the Kinect with Skyrim? Huh. News to me.

Next, you'll be telling me it has voice commands to sort by weight and stuff. That would be sweet if it did that.

*chuckles.

Yeah, the ads get annoying, but it's the 360 we're talking about. Ads are the selling point of the console now, not the games. Did you forget? :P
