Introducing Kinect Support for 360 #2

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 3:21 am

Actually putting out patches that not only fix things, but add new stuff is comical? Christ people.

You may not agree with the kinect support, but not many companies would release it for free.
Not many companies would put it on after release.

The patch that voice commands comes with is not out yet.

I'll dust off the kinetic for the item sorting, hotkey equip and ally commands. I'll never need it to shout though.

Am i the only one who thinks all this motion control and kinect garbage is just... garbage? It never seems to be an improvement over the controller, and still vastly inferior to the keyboard + mouse. The video for skyrim's kinect support continues to support my conclusion. Bethesda should have put the time spent on kinect support towards more important things.

I hate that game companies are wasting budget and developer hours adding in support for gimmicky features like Kinect.

I would love to see a proper patch or add-on that has a menu overhaul, instead of some silly Kinect command for sorting by weight or value. Why in the world won't PC players be able to sort their items? This, to me, is a disgrace. Wii games, kinect games, PS move games, all of this motion capture technology is way too immature to be useful.

I once played an entire circuit of mario kart wii without picking up the wiimote at all. I got 3d place overall. The game practically played itself, as it would have to because motion control is so horrendous. I hate gimmicks. Hate hate hate.

And yet, if Bethesda had announced SPEARS, I'm sure the response would have been far more approving. Despite the Kinect offering more functionality.....

OH NOES! While level designers and art creators work on DLC, and while programmers work on bug fixes, a few other guys added some other free stuff!

I don't like Kinect = Kinect is for idiots = Bethesda svck.

Hilarious thread.

It offers more functionality for a very small percentage of people who own the game. Two entire platforms are being left out in the cold when it comes to this release, so I hardly think my lack of excitement is unjustified.

I will only state that we disagree about the Kinect adding in any functionality.

If voice recognition were added generally to all three platforms, then we'd be talking about something. As it is, it's a gimmick.

How does it work? I have all the right stuff and it won't seem to function.

lol, living up to your user name I see. Just kidding :) I expect it will be released next month or so.

Regarding the lack of PS3 voice function: we already know that MS has one month right to exclusive content so perhaps Beth can't reveal the PS3/PC's voice function just yet. Maybe several months later we will see similiar official voice functions for the other platforms. In fact I'd prefer to see several smaller DLCs released before 'the big one' as I'd hate to have to wait one month before it could be released on other platforms.

And while I'm not interested at all in Kinect you have to admit that making something like this and then giving it away for free is pretty awesome. If it were Capcom or EA they would have a price on it already.

So far we've had Hi-res textures, more kill animations, and voice function added. So what's next?

How about some bugfixes .... you know ... like in the "unofficial" bugfix mods.... you know... made by "non-professional"...
I know, iknow, i ride the "Fix the goddam game" wave but to me and a lot of other people it is 1st priorety.

O RLY?

Kinect sales = very high.

Skyrim 360 sales = very high.

The only way this affects only a "very small percentage of people who own the game" is if there's very little overlap between those two groups. This forum ain't representative.

If they were implementing it as separate head tracking, then I could have got interested in the news as it could find it's way onto the PC version at some point.
Voice commands, big deal.
If I want to shout at my screen I will just play BF3 instead, with a swear box sat next to me.

As you say, not necessary these to groups intersect. Looking at the core values of these two products, I see a lot of differences that could make the market overlap very small.

Kinect is Microsoft's answer to the WiiMote. It's a new device not aimed at core games with a social/family value. Excellent for mini and party games.

Skyrim: snadbox game that requires dedication and a lot of time to enjoy in every aspect, not something for the causals.

Skyrim sales are about 50-50 between Xbox 360 and the Ps3 and PC, not counting people who made digital purchases. So let's assume everyone who bought it on the 360 also has a Kinect. That would still mean a majority of the people who bought the game aren't able to utilize these features. And since we know that it isn't true that everyone who bought the game on the 360 also has Kinect, we have to assume even fewer people will have access to these new features. Kinect ownership doesn't even make up a third of Xbox 360 owners, so it's more likely that the majority of people who bought Skyrim for the 360 don't have Kinects.

Even if half the owners of the 360 version of Skyrim have Kinects, there still only about quarter of the population of Skyrim players as a whole. That still seems like a lot more people AREN'T getting something compared to the few who are.

I don't understand - are they going to role this out for the xbox 360, then for other platforms? Is that what it means when it says " Bethesda Game Studios has been hard at work on creating the first set of game add-ons that will be exclusive to the Xbox 360. This additional content will add new quests, locations, features, and much more to the world of Skyrim. Stay tuned for more details."

Or is it saying that the 360 will receive quests, locations and so on from Bethesda that will never become available on other platforms.

Because I understood that the xbox version had it exclusively for a couple of months only.

Anyone with a brain knows that the kinect is a failure. its been out now for a year and a half and there is still not a game that has been released that has made me think I'll need to get myself a kinect for that game. If you love dance or party games with friends then the kinect is a winner but if you like playing proper games that require long hours of play time the kinect then becomes a burden on your energy levels when at the end of the day most people put on a game to wind down after a hard day on there feet at work or studying in schools.if they dropped the price to about £50 I'd maybe buy one just for those rare times you want to play party games with a group of friends but not at the price that it is just now.it's just not worth it.

Doesn't Microsoft give some kind of huge incentive to promote Kinect Functionality too?

You know what would of been a great surprise? Making that Unnoficial patch an official patch, or beth hiring the guys that fixed their own game.

If that is the case, I expect this content to be leaked, sooner or later to PC anyway. You won't see on official sites but it will be very popular nevertheless, a sort of giant FU response from the PC community to Microsoft.

Mmmm... It seems like a bit of a bad idea to make it exclusive permanently... You'd lose more customers than you'd gain. Of course, as I am lead to understand it is free, so that is quite a moot point.

Oops - Can't believe I missed this. That content is already "leaked" to PC. A mod exists for voice controlled Thu'um on the Steam Workshop, and has done since before GameJam was publicly released (to my knowledge)

It's the voice command that is really in play here. That "Kinect" technology is just a spinoff from the main reason it was created for. That was NOT games, but for the commercial / business market. They just allowed it to expand into the gaming world. ME3 has had good success with this. It is the way things are headed.

EDIT: As a matter of fact it will soon replace the mouse.

No... You're kidding right? That is going to be so awkward. At least a mouse works and is guaranteed to work. I have enough issues with my phones touch screen not working properly, and for me that technology has always been really slow and laggy. It's been way more efficient to do things with older input devices than with kinect.
