Quest Markers, and why they should be discontinued.

Oh yes you will, chunkyman! You came into this discussion, now you will choose a side! :stare:

Right. What chunkyman thread should we be on now ... #151?? :twirl:

As for me, yes, I do miss the Morrowind days of giving you a general vicinity of a quest goal and the rest was up to you. You should have to earn those hard quest reward artifacts or quest goal. So, I am probably closer to the OP than I am with those flaming the OP.

What else is a game other than an extension of the imagination?
Fair point, but too much extension of imagination makes it a crap game.
Unless your saying Nethack is as good as Skyrim

Or you can have the option to use markers or not. Skyrim's system isn't perfect, but it's a step in the right direction in letting you choose to have markers or not.

I'd be fine with an option to remove the quest marker. Not sure I'd enjoy exclusively directions rather than a map marker and good old north pointing compass, but it's not something I'd go crazy over. Following a quest marker, to me, is different than opening the map, checking alignment, and then moving on. I also would prefer the map system to directions. Maybe it's me. But I see no reason to argue to eliminate any one option, as if it ruins the game or something.

Options I like - let's everyone choose the one they like. Doing it only your way, or mine, or someone else's, let's only some people have what they like.
Okay, first things first. I am the most important person in the universe so what I want is what I get. (Including Emperorship of Tamriel)
Secondly, the problem with the quest marker taking priority in quest design over a north pointing compass, a map and a brain is the fact you can apply a quest marker to either, but a map and utensils to only one (without being redundant and not very fun)

Not trying...I will blow it up!
You'd get along well with Lamar Smith :P

They should just add fast travel, magic floating quest marks, remove stats and many pieces of armor and dumb everything else down. Also get rid of that awsome spell maker. Also all other rpg elements.

The first two replies are incredibly stupid and show that they did not read the op.

I agree with you in every point. That is my one major compaint about Skyrim. The only thing that really buggs me. I want to have NPCs actually tell me where to go and not use those stupid quest arrows...

If you never had quest markers then people like me that are not massive rpg fans but do like playing skyrim would probably not enjoy playing the game as much as I do now. But with the option to use quest markers on and off just makes more sense . And also using fast travel when you want to. but by all means turn your quest markers off and enjoy talking and exploring your surroundings. But I however will leave mine turned on.

Which is why they should design quests like a traditional RPG and add questmarkers over the top.

Questmarkers can apply to all quests, hardcoe RPG options don't.

That's quite okay, I'm sure you've migrated on from other linear games where you've had your destination, "next adventure" clearly pathed out for you to explore and conquer. I really do not mind. More TES fans is more TES fans. I am, in the spirit of the OP, merely asking for options to my preferred style of play.

The argument I'm trying to make surely comes off as purr-snickety, when honestly, I am just trying to enjoy my style of play as I see fit. I'm honestly not after means of insulting whatever you find enjoyable, I just feel devoid of options consistent with previous TES titles.

Not possible.
You cannot play the game without questmarkers, it simply cant be done. Because there is hardly any dialogue, and certainly no directions.
That's an enormous exaggeration. There are a few quests that are hard to complete without checking, but I have them all turned off and only turn them on when I get stumped. I've done dozens of quests and used the markers a half a dozen times.

i've just realized part of the major problem with this whole marker/map system:

there is no option to turn off the marker indicating where I AM on the map. or, is there, lol?

No there isn't. Maybe by editing the ini? Hiding player location and disabling the quest arrows would make for nicer gameplay. If you leave the roads, that is :hehe:

Like Map Marker Overhaul used with Ayleid Steps in Oblivion, lots of "where the [censored] am i now?" moments

Well since they added voices to the game removing quest markers would increase the voice acting needed to direct the player to the quest, then you have the radiant Ai quest...
I myself would be happier if they removed the compass....as a PS3 player the only way that I can remove it is to remove the HUDD, which means removing my Health,Magic, and stamina bars. As well as removing the cross hairs, and the subtitles the "press X" places, heck I don't know if I'm hidden, or if taking stuff from a certain place is stealing...and well I enjoy seeing those things.

A remove compass feature will be nice, I can just quickly look at the map to see where the map marker is and head in that general direction, and I can fully explore without knowing whats in that direction.

OP makes some reasonable points, but I do feel that a lot of his problems can be solved by turning off the compass. To my mind, all the compass markers break immersion (and how on earth is my character supposed to know that all these things are there?). I don't see any RP problem with the idea that NPCs can mark locations on my mark.

PLEASE [censored] READ BEFORE COMMENTING. YOU CAN'T PLAY WITHOUT QUEST MARKERS IN SKYRIM BECAUSE THERE ARE NO DIRECTIONS IN THE JOURNAL.

Yes you can.

Most quests list at least the name of the location in the journal. Open your map, find the place, and go.
For those that don't list the location name...but only have stuff like "Talk to Otis"...keep a hand written log. Many players do that. For many games.

But yeh...we can't have them completely removed. Too many players depend on them and Skrim is all about letting the player decide how to play this game.

I don't recall any quests with "Talk to Otis" saying where Otis was at any point.

And using the map to chunder to the location is still a linear way of playing, the point is quests should be built around old school RP techniques and the quest marker should be added to them.

Off the top of my head there is one where you have to bring a shipment to somebody and the quest giver tells to where the guy is.
The journal just says "Give the shipment to Bert."
Something like that.

I keep a log and every quest written down there has a location.

Every quest giver that I've ever run into tells you where to go. The journal just doesn't record all of that.

Honestly, with the way that the physics engine blows things around, I've found it damn near necessary to find quest objects sometimes. Looking for something on the ground like it's a lost contact lens isn't fun. And it's nice when I just feel like being lazy sometimes. Otherwise it doesn't bother me to flip it on briefly to get an idea of where a quest is.

What I do object to, though, is the way the system marks places on the map before I've been there.

I haven't touched markarth or the area surrounding it, but because of quests marking the location it's pretty well filled out already. Don't like that.
