Don't defend Bethesda

Post » Fri May 18, 2012 11:01 am

You guys defending the developer are wrong and just making a case for developers to release a broken game to profit from it at a certain time, (Xmas) then take months and months to fix it till its able to play the way it should. Bethesda even stated they are taking the holidays off and won't get to Quest fixes till sometime in January maybe. That is terrible. So you have a bunch of people sitting there with a quest list that can't be completed while the developers bathe in the money. Yea its a big game, but its not their first and they shouldn't be given any excuses for taking so long with the patches. Taking the holidays off? I get a three day weekend where I work and that's it. So how about they do the same and start rolling those patches out now. This game is collecting dust on my shelf and will continue to do so until they properly fix it. I should sell it and wait for the GOTY edition a year from now when the MIGHT have all the problems fixed. I have better games to play that actually work, but congratulations Bethesda you svckered me out of my money. Enjoy it.

Try making your own game before you complain about how buggy it is. It is a lot of hard and painstaking work to get the code just right and try not to break other parts of the code.

Better yet, why don't you figure out a way to make the patches yourself and publish them to the community instead of sitting around and complaining.

The "a game this big" argument is a poor excuse. Bugs are very obvious and the product was released with the full knowledge of defects.
That aside, nothing has been as game breaking as say, fallout vegas. These bugs are very annoying, and detract from the over all play. Just wasted an hour and a half looking for treasure chests only to find out via the internet that since patch 1.2 they are no longer in the game. It stuff like this that hurt the game, In my playing I run into;
Backwards dragon I've yet to kill
Bought house in windhelm with the altar and bones still left behind
Treasure map useless since no treasures
Placing objects in whiterun home bounce all over up re-entry of house, weapon rack work?
Guild thieves bribe doesn't clear bounty and each guard asks for money.
Enchanted effects don't improve smithing or enchanting values
cann't load old save without new patch, no reversion and no surprise there, or real issue.

I could go on about little graphical things or have already forgotten. Yes, its a big game. Yes there are bugs. But I think the op is merely frustrated by the fact that this is becoming a big trend with games these days, and it seems developers or perhaps the publisher(bigger sinner) isn't learning anything from this. I work in the pharma industry, I would never repetitively get away with this.

I love the elderscroll series(wife loves it too and is cursing me as I type), but the 1.2 patch, vegas, star trek, all lead down a worn path. It detracts from what could be the greatest game experience ever. A gamer should not have to rely on the internet to find out if he/she is doing something wrong or its a bug.

1. The dev team put body and soul into this game for 6 years. I don't think we could really deny them some time off for Xmas. Who knows, maybe the time off will help.

2. Bethesda don't decide when a game is released. They are a developer, not a publisher. Last I checked, 2K are the culprits there.

I wish I got a three day, weekend, OP.

It does seem Skyrim has more bugs than Oblivion or Morrowind did when they were released. It's a tad disgraceful, but then I don't understand what it's like to be a game developer. I sympathize with them a little. However, I just wish they would hurry and fix everything up. Lack of finding major bugs has made me paranoid.

So all your saying is that Bethesda should not enjoy the holidays and work 24/7 on fixing their game? You already said it in your post, they relesed a game during the holiday seasons, Roger, got it. But a game this BIG, This complex takes times, even they stated that fixing one bug in a game this big could potentianlly cause havoc with the games code. I spent the 160 for the CE. Yea im a little upset, but it doesnt mean im not having fun exploring the world they crafted. Your the reason the game is collecting dust, your like the other idiots that blast bethesda for releasing it. Hey guess what you didnt have to buy it, but you did. So go play your other games cause yes there are other games that need to played or why not pop Skyrim in what ever console or gaming rig you have, Enjoy the 70+ hours that i know that isnt broken and shut the [censored] up. Enjoy your Holidays like Bethesda and everyone else is going to.
Well said.
Even though my gameplay is limited because of a few bugs it is enjoyable.

i also think they've missed some things in the game that they should add to it like when you sell an item it should disply the carry weight so we know otherwise you have to click on the tab then check then click back and so forth plus fixing marakoth cause i cant go there at all ................

Your over use of Hyperboles is quite degrading. If your Skyrim copy literally wont allow you to play the game because even more than 5 quests are legitimately broken, I will buy you a knew copy of the game. I know that you are pissed off because maybe you can't start a quest, or end one, but come on. The game has infinite quests, so why not level up your character instead of sit there crying over a few broken quests. Its the Holiday season, so I suggest you do what Bethesda does and spend time with your family rather than your virtual one. And who in their right mind would not defend Bethesda? They took 3 fricken years to make this game, and you are getting pissed off over a Holiday they are taking as a break? You are overly selfish, and in some ways very one track minded.

Coding while going to school and coding for a big name company is one and the same.

It is very much not the same thing, just as a medical school intern is not one in the same with an experienced neurosurgeon.

The fact that they are selling a product for money also invokes numerous other legal and moral distinctions.

Bethesda is still good in my book, anyone that expects a game not to have bugs is delusional, at least Bethesda is doing the right thing and getting updates out as it can to fix issues. Thats more than I can say from some other game companies
I'm delusional.

People have to remember that these forums arent a reflection on the whole userbase playing Skyrim.

There are millions and millions of people playing Skyrim right now, and these forums have 261,102 members. Thats for all of Bethesda games, so the number playing Skyrim out of that is alot less. So either way you cant get a true reflection of what the overall opinion of bugs in a game is.

Of course there are issues, but for every person who has bugs, there is another than doesnt. Its just the ones with bugs post on forums, while the ones who dont are happily playing

Your opinion, I don't think it's broken. Yeah, it has glitches and bugs, but I think Bethesda overwhelmed themselves with such a masterpiece of a game.

Bethesda even stated they are taking the holidays off and won't get to Quest fixes till sometime in January maybe. That is terrible. So you have a bunch of people sitting there with a quest list that can't be completed while the developers bathe in the money.
I'm happy they prioritized and organized. I've yet to find a quest that I couldn't finish, not saying there aren't any, but after 200+ hours, in this stage, I wouldn't mind finding one. Stuff like backwards flying dragons and resistances buggered up is more irritating than a handfull (out of [censored]loads) glitched quests.

Yea its a big game, but its not their first and they shouldn't be given any excuses for taking so long with the patches.
Massive game, a lot to consider. Why don't you apply at Bethesda and fix all our problems within a day. Gamers are spoiled nowadays, snapping fingers doesn't work. Now if you had some kind of constructive critisism (read criticism, not flaming)...

Taking the holidays off? I get a three day weekend where I work and that's it. So how about they do the same and start rolling those patches out now.
Just.. lol, I'll think of you when I have my 3 weeks off.

While I agree with you, it's probably many people's idea to actually play the game for the holidays. Snowy, cold setting in the game while it's actually snowing or white outside, entering an Inn with the fire going with the smell of their own fireplace burning firewood, while relaxing for the break and playing some Skyrim is probably what a lot of people had planned.

Do your resistances still work? How could they not have noticed that resistances were broken?

Yes mine work just fine, as do my dragons. My wife is a nord and still barely takes damage off a frost dragon. I dont have any resistances besides what armor gives me but I dont really notice either way.

Guild thieves bribe doesn't clear bounty and each guard asks for money.

Think thats WAI, its a bribe for them to 'look' the other way not to remove the bounty as long as you dont talk to a guard they wont ask. Unless you are referring to something else other than being caught by a guard and bribing them.

Enchanted effects don't improve smithing or enchanting values

I have +% smithing items, they work for me, I was able to improve my legendary beyond what I originally was able to (granted it was only a few extra def points but still able to do so)

I've talked with a friend in game design before and the people who actually make the game don't get paid as much as you'd think. Bethesda's publisher ZeniMax is the one profiting from the game's success rather than Bethesda itself from what I understand of the industry from the people i've talked to. I could be totally wrong and I apologize if I am. Bethesda will fix the problems and there's no use raging on their forums like you are OP. Take the time to read your post before you rage and think about how that will make you look and how much it really helps the community. Save it on a word document or whatever you please and come back to it in a day or two and decide if you really want to post it. Developers are much more receptive to calm expressions of displeasure with their products than they will be to flat out raging. The tone in your writing expresses a lot more than you think and what you did here was basically walking up to Bethesda's face and yelling incoherently at them. Games are bound to have bugs somewhere or another, crush one and another one will pop up as has been shown since patch 1.2. People who didn't have problems before do now. They'll get our problems fixed one way or another i'm sure.

I agree. there is no excuse for all the bugs and glitches. Ya the game is big, so what? It just means more work needs to be put into it to make it finished. A job that was not done. Defending bethesdas actions only shows the control they have. Its not the consumers fault that a corporation bit off more than they can chew. Yet once again the consumer is left hanging while the corporation gets bailed out. But they have all the power. They make the choices we all must live with. I do enjoy the game, what I can play of it. I also remember a time when games release got pushed to because of techinical problems. It svcked, I hated it. But what I hate more is paying for something that does not work like it should. Even some companues do it still to ensure user end performance in at its best... Gears of war 3 dlc for example. Not much of an example as the games are concerned, but a perfect example of how bethesda should handle the issue. Right down to a free, even if it is small dlc. Such an idea would not hurt them in the pocket, but most likley be a benefit in the long run. As far as not fixing the problems till after the holiday season, that is weak. As stated above how much time off to they need? A few days is more than enough, its not like we out a deposit on the game and they are waiting on a balance to be paid. Fix the dam game asap so forums like this are a thing if the past. The sheer number of complaints here has got to be detering sales. Look at the number of users and posts on skyrim vs any other game in the forum. Its sickening. the post im waiting for is bugs fixed, but that charactor youve been playing fir tgree weeks has to get deleted in order for the changes to take effect. That will be the day I sell skyrim and wait for the goty. If they even get a goty. want to exoress you iutrage on how bad this situation is being handled? Stop posting here. Do what I have been doing. When a friend askes "hey how is skyrim?" Be honest. I tell everyone. "it has the POTENTIAL to be the best game if this consoles generation. It just jas a lot of bugs that need to be worked out first. If I were you id check the forum for updates. Hold on to your $64.90 till after the holiday. That way all youll do os enjoy the game, not hate the glitches." Hopefully...

As I do agree that they should have not release it, and should have done further beta testing first, I do not agree with how you handled your post. Name calling and trash talking really will get you nowhere. For now we just have to work with bethesda and keep posting bugs. At least this isn't fallout new vegas.

Bethesda have made a franchise I've always wanted as a kid. They execute them in way that they're intuitive and full of life and role-play.

I know there will be bugs and I know I won't be told what to do, either.

I'M HERE FOR YOU BETHESDA. I KNOW YOU FIX THINGS WHEN THEY GET BROKEN AND IN THE END I HAD AN AMAZING TIME.

For all the folks making metaphors about other products, software isn't other products. You agree to the terms of the product, both written and social agreements, that software will inevitably have bugs, and that the developer will patch them over time.

if you are not aware of that or cannot understand that, i encourage you to reconsider purchasing software in the future. you're not going to find any software that doesn't launch with bugs and post-launch patch support. that is a fundamental part of software design and its not changing because you're butthurt over a broken quest.

get with the times or get a new hobby

I agree to absolutely nothing. How do I even know about the terms of the product until I unbox it and read the EULA? The law means there is no premise of assumption. It is not sufficient to assume that because I've bought games before that I ought to know what I'm in for. If you honestly believe that the hobby of gaming involves liking or lumping a poor QA of software then it's you who ought to find a new hobby. Not only is your (wrong) opinion insulting to people who are experiencing issues, it's shameful and suggests that being a gamer is synonymous with not having any consumer rights.

Software isn't other products, and that is exactly why a metaphor or anology is used because if it was the same thing you wouldn't be accepting it - that's the whole bloody point. At what point in the history of gaming and software products did it become the accepted practice to remain silent on known issues? Where is the line meant to be drawn? At a patch that breaks more than it fixes? What about a fix for a known issue that doesn't universally fix the issue but is treated as if it has fixed it in spite of mounting evidence to the contrary?

But it looks like there are complaints on both sides. More on ps3 though. What is a list of xbox issues are you guys having? And did you have it before the patch?

For video games the EULA is usually always the same. Some examples:

http://www.rockstargames.com/eula
http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/legal/wow_eula.html
http://www.ea.com/1/product-eulas

Cant find anything for Skyrim specifically online but its located in the back of your manual. EULAs usually dont differ from one game to another with very little changes based on the game/company. Almost every software you buy you accept the product 'AS IS'. If its a good company like Blizzard or Bethesda, they will usually fix issues if they are able to. Some games recieve absolutely no support even with bugs (someone mentioned issues with Sims 3). Patches that are accepted are accepted 'AS IS' also. The good thing, Beth is looking to fix the issues created by 1.2 with another patch, you can give them some credit in trying to resolve issues that some people are having when they try to play.

I think it depends on the model, my game on 1.2 runs fine, occasional freezes but nothing exhuberant or out of the norm.
