It was only recently that I installed Oblivion on my HDD, before that I'd play hours upon hours from the disk, My disk still works and my Xbox still works, I'm pretty sure these games are designed with the game not being installed to the HDD in mind. I wouldn't worry about the disk "dying".
I've played Oblivion uninstalled for gosh I'll estimate around 800 hours. I didn't have any problems with the disk so Skyrim can be played uninstalled, it's just a matter of, if you want to risk your xbox over it. My Xbox was relatively young when I played Oblivion so I could risk it no problem, now it is certainly not the case I need it installed.
They have no source from Bethesda confirming that a day one patch will fix it, therefore that article is fail.
I'm skeptical of the article as well. Beth know about it, I've seen two devs read the different threads on this subject so we will get an answer on this, probably Friday.
