Dawnguard and Future DLC Discussion - Thread #30

Now that we have mounted combat coming I REALLY REALLY REALLY want blocking for dual wielding and blocking for spell in one hand and weapon in the other.

epic light armor perk.(even tho I have a mod for it)

More mage/battle mage designed armors.

craftable staffs.

Actually, the winged vampire lord stuff, when first shown in the gamejam video, caused a LOT of people to complain about why this wasn't in skyrim already. If anything, Bethesda is pandering the fanbase. Just look at them steadily adding features from GameJam into Skyrim:
  • Ranged killcams
  • Enhanced underwater visuals
  • Kinect support
  • Mounted combat
I don't know how flying vampire lords fit into the lore, but it sure seems that it's the next item on Bethesda's list of 'things we need to add from GameJam' list. I wouldn't complain :)

Okay, new info about Dawnguard. I've found a lot of new animation entries from DLC in patch 1.6. Key features:

At least one type of crossbows will be unique with unique animation - Dwarven
I actually only expected there to be on type of crossbow "crossbow". The fact that there will be ebony, glass, steel, etc. is awesome.
New dialogue gestures:
Defensive Hand;
Hand on Chin;
Welcome Hand.
These actually excite me, they'll make conversations better now that people won't always be touching their hips.
Transformation in a Vampire Lord!
I was pretty convinced this DLC would be about vampires.
Snow Elf Prince ascension burning.
I'm guessing that the Snow Elf Prince is still alive because he is an immortal vampire? Wasn't he on Solstheim? Maybe that's where the DLC will take place?

like in morrowind i liked it how you could wear armour and also wear a robe over the top of it lol.
More unique items similar to what Morrowind offered would be great, and the robe over the gear was a plus, also I want spell creation and all of the lost spell effects wince Morrowind, but all of this should be a small portion to a proper expansion pack.

Whats wrong with "Underworld"? I thought it's visual style was pretty awesome, Better then twilights...
I do love Underworld but for those that want that in ES no, ES should stay ES Underworld should stay Underworld.

Ugh, Vampire Lord is one of the things I sorely did not want to see come to Skyrim. Not that the idea is flawed, but I just got the impression that such a gimmick won't get the polish it needs to be implemented seamlessly into the game world.

Have faith, if you have pc the vampire mods will take full advantage of it.

This "Coffin Puzzle" thing reinforces the vampire-influenced DLC.

Maybe a little puzzle to unearth a long-lost dead guy or something.

I'm beginning to wonder if the Snow Elf Prince isnt a vampire or something? I know he was killed a long time ago in lore but what if he is going to be raised by the Thalmor?

Animations of crossbows now moved to folder DLC01.

The fact that they call it DLC01 is basically confirmation that there will be more than 1 DLC; hence the need to number it. Not that we didn't already know that. :P

I just really hope that we get crossbows outside of the DLC. I'll be buying the DLC for sure, I just don't want them to be too exclusive.

I think mods are highly overrated in terms of what they add to the experience. I honestly have more fun making them than using them. When I want to play the game, I stick with Vanilla. That's just a general problem I have with PC gaming period. I spend more time trying to improve the experience, because on PC there's always another boundary to push somewhere. That's why for simple recreation, I stick with consoles, the limitations imposed by those devices is proof that freedom is as much a curse as it is a blessing.

I think they're obligated by Microsoft to produce at least 2 expansions, as it's been stated that "The first Two DLC will be exclusive for thirty days". That to me speaks very plainly of an intent to make at least expansions.

Yes it was mentioned we would get three big expansion with things in between to keep us happy.

Beck they could add the crossbows in a patch, I am holing they do the same with spell creation and more spell types, and I am also hoping for the option to change your hair, beard, face paint, and dirt levels to be changed in a patch as well.

and to add to getting it earlier, i also like to think that the reason is because you Xbox players have to pay for online play...

I thought Xbox players only had to have a gold membership to play online games while purchasing DLC only requires an internet connection?

Primarily because there are no references to winged vampires in TES lore and because it's inspired by a relatively popular movie franchise.

Wouldnt be the first time elements of the Elder Scrolls series have taken "inspiration" from a popular movie franchise. Ever wonder what Oblivion would look like had Peter Jackson never made the Lord of the Rings into a movie trillogy?

I think they should add content where you are assigned by the leader of which ever faction you helped during the civil war to defend an outpost on the outskirts of Skyrim. They could make it where you can build structures and defenses and start your own town. Also they could implement some sort of trading and ship building. They could make it to where you can outfit your soldiers with better weapons and armor and make you defend trade routes from Skyrim. The main quest could be trying to stop some sort of freakish monsters that come out of the woods or hills or something. Its just an idea and I want to see if anyone else has any good ideas or if this one was worth putting on here.

Probably a lot more original and unique but I get your point. "Borrowing" from other IP's serves to lower the quality of the games in general.

Super stoked about the Vampire Lord thing. It's not like Bethesda has at all stuck to their own lore when it came to vampires, for example Skyrim vampires are supposed look like corpses regardless if they fed or not and they live under the ice of frozen lakes, according to lore of course. So then in that case why not add something new and exciting?

Well, we get to transform INTO the vampire lord...so what lore can back this up? I mean we have little lore surrounding as to who the vampires we have in the game are, and the fingers are pointing to the Cyrodiilic Clan.

Unless we can join a new clan, turn into a vampire lord while NOT a Sanguinare Vampiris vampire, then I would understand.

What lore backs up the absence of the traditional Skyrim vampires? As you've said there's very little lore concerning this current breed of vampire in Skyrim. Yeah, they're similar to the Cyrodiil flavor at the moment but it isn't established that this is indeed the same kind of vampire as was in Oblivion. The way I see it, vampires in Skyrim right now are a different breed considering their disease is a different one than the Cyrodiil version (unless Bethesda arbitrarily changed the name from Porphyric Hemophilia to Sanguinare Vampiris in which case that's [censored]). So if they are indeed a different clan of vampires, and I'm assuming they are, what's the problem with Bethesda adding to their lore and fleshing them out, especially considering they have next to none at the moment? They have room to expand on them if there's no info on them.

My point is Bethesda has ignored their vampire lore thus far and no one has cared, so why care now if they want to add something new?

Regarding vampire-lords, keep this in mind: Most of the books and legends concerning vampires in Tamriel are based on folklore and half-truths. As a result, there are many things not mentioned in-game about vampires that may very well be true. Case in point: in oblivion most npcs think vampires can NEVER go out in the daylight. In the in-game book, "The Locked Room" the author apperently believes vampires pass out in the daytime and only awaken when the sunsets. Perhaps vampire lords turning into monsters was just another aspect of vampirism that is unknown or misunderstood by the people. Vampire lords are rare, and who would believe some old wives' tale about a flying bat monster? It's very easy to add this into current lore.

I don't think the vampire lord is the same thing that was shown in the Game Jam video. IMO, it'll probably be Volhikar, not something completely made up.

Well, while there is no lore to back up the existance of winged vampire lords in current TES lore one could make the argument that there is no lore that specifically states that winged vampire lords dont exist rendering any objection to their implementation based on the lore void.

as far as vampire lords go mechanically, i think it's kind of dumb to assume the one in the game jam video is the one we'll be getting in the DLC. that was something somebody threw together in a week for fun and it was obviously unfinished. whatever's in the DLC will look and feel considerably more polished.

as far as lore:

Regarding [pretty much everything in lore that hasn't been seen in a game yet], keep this in mind: Most of the books and legends concerning [pretty much everything] in Tamriel are based on folklore and half-truths.
adjusted this a bit for you but - this. there's exceptions, obviously, like multiple corroborating stories about a thing, but pretty much everything is [censored] grandiose speculation until we as players witness it with our own eyes, especially for something as mythical as vampires and werebeasts.

using "oh it's against lore" as an argument against something doesn't really work nearly as much as people want it to.
