Patch 1.4 for PS3 Discussion [merged similar topics]

Post » Sun Jun 17, 2012 4:11 am

The nature of the problem is that the game is tracking altogether too much information. People on the PC have found a lot of the horribly inefficient ways the game is tracking obsolete or redundant information (like re-applying a stacking of the Nirnroot glow/sound for all discovered Nirnroots every day; like keeping corpses and their locations/orientations/contents saved in memory far too long; or for ash piles, forever). The means of addressing this would be to reduce the incidence of such unneeded information (clear out zones more frequently, get rid of ash piles at cell cleanup, stop wasting space on crap like Nirnroot stacks).

As such, this isn't a method that "fixes" the problem. The problem cannot be "fixed". It can be mitigated and reduced (and, as the word they chose to use: optimized). Which will often (hopefully usually) result in the reduction or elimination of symptoms. But if the problem is tracking too much info, the only 'fix' would be tracking no info, which obviously isn't a solution. All that's left is that somewhere in between - tracking *less* info. And hopefully the amount of information that is actually tracked post-patch is now reduced such that the overwhelming majority never break the threshold that causes lag.

Yes, i believe they found that happy medium in New Vegas, I had least amount of issues in that game post patches.

There's just no pleasing some people.

Agreed. Even thought the game is in a better state today than it was at release, I feel there are more and more players complaining. The only thing I get upset about is the time it takes to get these tweeks to the game to us, but I ALSO understand from experience that it can often take some time.

It does seem at times that even if they produced a game, any game that is flawless there will be players that will not accept it. Skyrim is certainly not perfect, niether is Bethesda's track record for making stable PS3 games. I had no problems with Fallout 3, even after all DLC. Fallout New Vegas, however, was barely playable at times, then after a year or so I put the disc back in and many, many things were fixed or improved to playable.

Just to hear that they are there working is enough for me. In fact, my version of Skyrim(U.S.A. version 1.03) is very playable, and highly improved from release day( don't misunderstand that as saying it is perfect or doesn't need a lot of further work). I do also believe there have been many players, blogs, and websites, exploding with misinformation to even flat out lies about this version. Why anyone would do this? I can't answer that, but I can say it's out there, and right here on this forum and the forums of almost every game I've played since developers began even posting forums for there games discussions. Several decades ago.

To some, NO game ever, by any developer, will be complete..

SO then they should release the game with no disc in it, and mail us the discs when the game is playable, as i have NEVER had issues such as this other than Bethesda games. We are not being unreasonable thinking we'd be able to play the game when we got home after buying it. I didn't want to pay 65 bucks to NOT play a game for months to wait until they patch it to some degree of playability. They flat out lied about the "new engine", said a lot of attention was being given to PS3 version this time, I personally don't excuse them for any of this, it's pure trash the way they conduct business.

Even thought the game is in a better state today than it was at release, I feel there are more and more players complaining.

To be fair, for many here the game is not in a better state. At release, with the 1.1 patch, I experienced some lag but nothing game breaking, which disappeared after investing in an SSD; and was able to play two characters as expected for about 40 hours. Then 1.2 came out, and it's been a broken mess ever since. And for some like myself, who have not been able to really play since before the holidays, or even longer, even after following all of the tips and recommendations, the only thing that will really please us is a working game.

I have experienced hard freezes that require shutting down the console, the last one being right had installed the game data and patch fresh, after quitting from the settings menu during the Helgen prologue because the dragon didn't spawn. Prior to that, I had lost two years of protected PSN saves because a freeze put the system into an eternal file restore loop, requiring a Sony recommended OS clean install to fix.

So some of the complaining is warranted and understandable.

So while I applaud the tone and detail given with the update today, I'm still in a wait and see holding pattern; and am hopeful that the crash fixes with pathing and AI, among the other crash fixes which were posted in today's update notes, will address the freezing on the PS3.

There's just no pleasing some people.

Agreed. I just read the changelog for 1.4, and I'm impressed that they've sought to address such a wide variety of core gameplay issues AND quest issues in a single patch. I'm eager to see it go live.

Some people will never be happy in any circumstances whatsoever. They're like tiny little children in permanent tantrum mode... serve them brussels sprouts, they throw them on the floor and demand ice cream. Serve them ice cream, and they throw it on the floor and demand cake while screaming and crying. Serve them cake, and they throw it on the floor and whine about how tired they are and how they just want their blankie.

It's sad, really. Skyrim has alllll kinds of issues, certainly, but many of us older gamers (I'm 30+) have been waiting our entire -lives- for precisely this kind of game. I don't care if it's rough around the edges -- I'm enjoying the [censored] out of it. I'm pleased to see Bethesda's committment to supporting their product, and I don't really give a [censored] about anything beyond that. If something goes wrong, [censored] it -- I load a previous save, and if it happens again, I report the issue as a recurring error so they can address it in a later patch. There is nothing in the video game world that requires screaming and whining and crying and stomping one's feet like we see so often in these forums.

??? Upon release I could play for more than 5 minutes before a freeze and having to do a hard shutdown of my PS3. Patch 1.3 made the game UNPLAYABLE for me and many, many others so I'm going to have to disagree that the game is in a better state today.

I'm 42, and have been waiting my entire life as well. All the more frustrating that it's unplayable.

I imagine that if you had bought the game at release, and the guide, and an SSD to improve the loading times and frame rate, and got to play the game of your dreams as it was intended to be played for two good weeks...

And then the frame rate became a slideshow at less than 6MB; and poltergeists took over your house, towns and NPCs, throwing stuff everywhere, even into the sky; and then the console started freezing intermittently, to the point of having to reinstall the OS; and the "maid of skyrim" became your main and only character build; meanwhile, every other disc based and PSN game in your library worked as expected.

Well, I think you wouldn't be pleased about it either.

Some people actually saw improvement after the patches. Some people aren't experiencing lag at all. I, for one, am not one of them. I haven't played for about a month now. But I am happy for the people that can play their game because it is an amazing game when it works

That's great if you were one of the few lucky ones, but scroll back through the forums around the time 1.3 was released and you'll see that for the majority of people the game did not improve and/or it got worse. If you're having no issues, great, but I like you have not played for about a month because I didn't want to keep doing hard shutdowns of my PS3.

Im not saying that the majority saw improvement by any means. I was just saying that some did. I have the lag on mine and like I said haven't played for a month. I am just happy for my fellow gamers that get to play the game without issues

Gotta love it, patch isn't even out yet and people are already saying its not going to fix anything.

You guys got lottery numbers for me?

Now, please, continue with the echo chamber.

I'm trying to remain hopeful and to give Bethesda the benefit of the doubt; however based on what I have read from past games, having researched into these claims directly, one doesn't need predictive anolytics to be concerned.

The update today had a slightly different tone, and an increased level of detail before release, than with previous updates. This makes me feel that they are listening to the community, on some level.

Of course, that could just be wishful thinking.

Guys i'm wondering here what can you think about this phrase? "Long term play optimizations for memory and performance (PS3)"

Why they didn't use the word "Fixed instead of long term"?

Bethesda always with their game of words.

Same words used for FO3 when we had this problem that was never fixed.........
Maybe they'll delete this too.

No, that's you being some sort of literalist. If you're going to get spun up about semantics, you're going to have an --extremely-- difficult time in the real world. Just sayin'. The fact that they didn't explicitly use the word "fixed" doesn't mean one [censored] [censored] thing.

That's exactly what it means actually . Same exact lingo has been spouted before about past games about same problemo.

I'm not defending Bethesda by saying this, but even if they did fix the lag that occurs in this game it would not be smart to officially announce this patch application as a "fix", as that word is subjective.

But, between you and me, the effects of this patch are probably going to be about as vague as their description.

Well all i can think is "Why this is not marked as fixed?!" Lets wait and see, but regarding last promises from Bethesda I not buying this one too. (Hope i'm wrong!)

It's kind of funny. I remember Dark Souls patches having the word "FIXED" all over them. And that was for issues that usually never presented
themselves unless players made a persistent effort for it to happen. (dragonhead stone anyone?)

I'm assuming Bethesda is using this type of terminology because they want to stress that they are, quite literally doing what they say, they are
trying to optimize the system. I don't necessarily think they can fix it- and they may know this, but in the mean time they will try to optimize what
they can. Now it's alright if you want to speculate that notion, but that's what I assume is going on here. That's just my opinion.

Hopefully the patch will arrive soon and we can be sure of our thoughts.

Correlation is not causation. It's one of the first things you learn in college. The only way we'll know whether or not they've adequately addressed the issue is to wait for the patch to go live.

If only Bethesda were as conservative with memory usage as they are specific information.

Nice one, but think with me if the game can't be fixed they also can't be sold .When I buy something i expect that to work properly, by now I cant even finish the main quest of the game and I'm suffering from crashes lag issues and those dragons just dont want to attack me anymore.
