The Skyrim Dead Is Dead Thread

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 4:25 am

Brother Cinco, I humbly enter the Valley:

Og, an argonian rogue, a confirmed and unrepentant cynic, out to determine if the world really isn't worth saving. He's traveled far enough to get tangled up in the strife in Sk'rim (in my mind, argonians have difficulty pronoucing "y"s.), and sees this struggle as the perfect microcosm to study whether mankind deserves a savior. He, by the very nature of placing himself at the whims of strangers and their needs, has already unwittingly started to prove himself wrong, and by his own actions. While trying to determine if the people are worthy by seeing what their motivations are for needing his help, he himself is actually doing the selfless things a cynic disbelieves. This ought to be real intersting. Level 10 so far and just spending time around Whiterun watching people, interacting with them and trying to see inside their hidden agendas, with a bow in one hand and healing spell in the other.

Good luck all, post updates often, and feel free to add your characters to the Graveyard, linked in my sig. (not just for the dead, but for the Dead is Dead)

-Gunny

I was having such a good time with Baro'thor's magic attacks that I decided to make a pure Mage and put ole Baro up on the shelf for a little bit.

Shazzui
High Elf Mage

Shazzui's tale begins in the land of Morrowind in the middle of a group of Dark Elves. This situation would appear to be a fatal mistake on Shazzui's part except that instead of being scared, he stands tall with confidence as one of the Dark Elves approaches him. The Dunmer hands Shaz a satchel and then embraces him in an almost fatherly hug. He whispers a few words to Shaz and then turns and walks away without looking back. The remaining Dark Elves follow the first and leaver our young hero all alone for the first time since he can remember.

He begins his journey towards the College of Winter hold in the Province of Skyrim. While he already knows a few basic spells and incantations, his desires require much more powerful spells. Wearing nothing but a simple cloak and hood and carrying only the satchel given to him by his "father", he appears to be an easy target for bandits and thieves. They quickly realized their error but by then it is too late. Shazzui encounters slight resistance in his journey to the College for mages until he spots a group of soldiers surrounding a group of bandits. He edges closer, careful to avoid detection and then realizes the two sides are the warring factions the Imperials and Stormcloaks. Shazzui gives a slight chuckle and can't believe his luck. He had studied maps of Skyrim and after a quick mental review of the surrounding area, he notes that Helgen is the closest Imperial stronghold so that is most likely the destination of these troops. He quickly rubs some dirt on his face, gives his shirt a few good rips, and chars the edges of his pants with a minor fire spell to give him a better chance of blending in with the dirty Stormcloaks soldiers. Just as the Imperials are loading the prisoners on to a wagon, Shazzui steps out of the forest and yells "Death to the Empire!"

As Shazzui is coming to, he notices they are rapidly approaching the gates of Helgen. He can't believe his luck! He had planned on having to infiltrate the stronghold on his own but here they are, carting him in like they were expecting him. As Shazzui is counting his graces, he adds one more to the list as he notices it is none other than Ulfric Stormcloak sitting next to him! Shaz starts to think this has to be more then luck: it is fate. After all his years of training and preparation, the man he was sent here to assassinate is sitting right next to him! He starts chuckling to himself as the cart comes to a halt and they are pulled out. They bring them over to a chopping block and after executing one man, the guard points at Shazzui and tells him to kneel. This is not going according to plan, thinks Shaz, and just as he is about to have to drop the disguise as helpless prisoner, it turns out his luck was only just beginning with the discovery of Ulfric. Right as the executioner raises his axe, a drago streaks across the sky and sprays a gout of liquid fire across the stronghold. Shazzui sees his chance and bolts.

He tries to find Ulfric in all the madness so he can complete one of his tasks but he is nowhere to be found. Shaz thinks to himself that would of been too easy and a part of him is thankful that Ulfric managed to get away this time. He hardly has time to think this though because there is still a dragon to escape from. Shazzui makes his way through some of the now burned out buildings and finds his way into a cave, with a little help from a Stormcloak. The easiest way to now find Ulfric will be to follow this man and "join" their cause, thinks Shaz. It is all unfolding in front of him...

I gotta say this Idea intrigues me... I might play 2 concurrent characters, one DiD and one normal.

I have yet to play the game but my copy will be arriving tomorrow (I hope) so we'll see.

Name: Turyel
Race: Altmer
Age: 18

Turyel is a spoiled arrogant kid who always got everything he wanted from his parents. Son of a powerful mage and an Auri-El pristess he's been trained in the arts of magic since childhood. Now his father wants him to be as powerful as him so he sent young Turyel to the best place to study magic in Tamriel: The College of Winterhold.

Being a powerful and influencial man in Summerset Isle, Turyel's father arrenged his son's trip to be as safe as possible. A very confortable carriage, soldiers to escort him and even goblin slaves to do whatever the prince's heart desire.

Approaching the southern border of Skyrim the caravan was attacked by orc bandits. The soldiers were killed and the slaves ran away. In the middle of the fight Turyel used a scroll of invisibility to escape but now he was alone and lost in a barbaric land.

After walking for some hours through the forest he found the road again and followed it hoping to find some trace of civilization. But unfortunately for Turyel the civilized people he found were imperial guards ambushing rebels in a crossroad. Turyel threatened the guards demanding they escorted him to the nearest town, offering good money for protection but it was all in vain. Their orders were to arrest the rebels and whoever happened to be with them. It looks like young Turyel will have to pull another magic trick out of his sleeve if he wants to get out of this alive.

Morndas, Last Seed 17 4E401

I can't believe in what just happened to me. How come those imperial bastards dare to treat me like that? As if being attacked by orcs and barely escaping alive wasn't enough, I was mistaken by a rebel and arrested. As soon as I get the word to my father those primitive monkeys will pay dearly. For now I must rest. After escaping execution in that stinky little nordic village I ended up in another crap hole called Riverwood. It's amazing how these barbaric towns all look the same. From there I went directly to Whiterun, a place that seems a little bit more civilized. I took a carriage to Windhelm wich is just south of Winterhold, my final destination.

Unfortunately the trip to Windhelm costed all the gold I had left after loosing almost everything to the bandits. Fortunately I had some trash I earned from a blacksmith in Riverwood who asked me to send a message to the Jarl, or whatever they call their leaders in this gods forsaken place, as if I had time to bother with their petty matters. I just said I would do it so he gave me directions to the nearest city. I traded those "gifts" he gave me for a night at the local inn. Tomorrow morning I'll leave to Winterhold and end this nightmare once and for all.

Tirdas, Last Seed 18 4E401

The carriage man in Windhelm was chargin 50 septims to take me to Winterhold. Good thing I stole some potions and books that were laying around in the room I rented at the inn. I sold these items at a local trade and left to the College of Winterhold.

(Spoilers of the College of Winterhold quest line bellow)

Spoiler
Arriving there I met Faralda, the college Gatekeeper. She asked me to cast a healing spell on her as proof that I'm a mage. What an insult to my intelligence. I didn't know the spell but that's because I've never had to heal anyone before. At the end of the day I had to pay her 30 golds for the spell. It sounds like a good scam to take money from new students. I'll report her to the Arch-Mage as soon as I get the chance.

After this unpleasent first impression I met Mirabelle who showed me my quarters. I changed clothes and headed directly to my first class with Master Tolfdir. After some tedious theoretical lecture we headed to a nearby digging site of an ancient nordic ruins. As soon as we entered the ruins I felt some sort of strange power in that place and I had this urge to find out what it was. I discovered a secret passage to an unexplored section of the ruins. There I had a vision of a member of the Psijic Order, an order of mages that disapeared centuries ago. Now I was sure something very powerful was hidden in those ruins and I had to find what it was. It had to be mine.

I went deeper into the ancient temple and fought draugrs left and right. The more I destroyed those undead beasts the more powerful I felt. After avoiding traps and destroying monsters me and Tolfdir reached a great chamber where a powerful mage draugr guarded what seemed to be some sort of magic orb. I defeated the undead mage and Tolfdir asked me to tell the Arch-Mage of the College about my findings. In the way out of the ruins I found another curious thing, some sort of wall full of text written in an unknown language. It didn't seem to be as important as the orb so I left it behind.

The Arch-Mage was impressed by my story and asked me to talk to the librarian, maybe he had a book about this strange artifact. It happens that the librarin is an orc, now that is something you can only see in Winterhold. Nothing's coming easy to me in the last few days and this wouldn't be any different. It seems that the books that contained the information I need were stolen by an ex-student called Orthorn and he's living with a group of dissident mages in a place called Fellglow Fort. Tomorrow I shall think what my next step will be, today I must rest once more.

Uthmir
Nord male
Level 8
To Uthmir who did many great deeds, such as slay a dragon near whiterun, and drink lots of mead.
His venture into Halldir's Cairn was his last, he slew the undead fiend, and yet, fell himself.
Falling down, and down, through Halldir's trapdoor to his death he fell just a bit too far.

PS. Such a [censored] way to go. I opened the trapdoor after beating him and fell straight through despite the boards there for you to hop down on and to my death.

That's about all you can do. The same can be said about the age verification system. Granted, there is and will be less than genuine posts. Some people will reload and continue playing. Some will post a fake character, out of the blue, just to get their name in the Memorial. Some will post when their dies, yet continue to play. There is nothing you can do to regulate that. You have to take things at face value. The dishonest ones are the ones that have to live with the fact that they are doing wrong. That in itself is penalty enough. You just have to keep going and know that what you post is true.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sonoura pressed the button and the gate opened. I'm not sure if the clue was genuine or a coincidence. Still, I took the chance and it payed off...This time. Continuing through the dungeon, we faced several different enemies. She moved very slowly and with great caution. Taking a few steps and scanning the ground, walls and ceiling for any sign of a trap or a place where an enemy might by be hiding. Continuously throwing Cryo Bob, out in front, she advanced through the passages.One by one, and sometimes two or more at a time. Bobby performed well. More often than not, it took several CBs to clear an area.
By the time we reached the end and faced the final boss, Sonoura was level 25 and a Master of Conjuration. She was able to call up, not one but two, very powerful Bobs. I kind of felt sorry for the final boss. He never stood a chance. Sonoura didn't share my pity. B&B pinned his ass against the wall and it was just a matter of time. Much the same way Sonoura was was pinned at the start. She cheered the boys on, as she striped down to her underwear and ran around the room yelling "Sweet revenge!"
Hmmm...Still not quite sure what all of that was about. :shrug:
After the, almost tragic, encounter with the first sphere, Sonoura never took any damage. We left the place, with over 6 hrs invested and a lot of doors and chests unopened. She just refuses to pick a lock, no matter how much I try to persuade her. It's below her evil dignity to accept such a "Task of the peasants" as she calls it.
She is now level 26, after advancing through the Mage Quest. It involved another dungeon, with similar enemies. These however, were not as powerful nor were there that many. It was a breeze. Sonoura walked through it, humming evil tunes and doing her nails. All the while, summoning her two new additions to the group.
Conjuration Spell spoiler-
Spoiler
Dremora Lord
She named them, The Dueling Banjos. Why, you ask? Because they will ____ anything. :evil: Those guys are bad and she loves it. :clap: She also pick up a couple of Illusion and Alteration spells, that she can train outside of combat. Plus the well known, Invisibility Spell. This should prove to be handy, when coupled with the DBs. No more hiding. She will be able to watch the action, first hand.
Now, it's off to find some stupid Staff. She is growing tired of the Mages. She is about ready to kill them all. I convinced her to play along a little longer. She REALLY hates being "Little Miss Helper". If this doesn't pay off soon, and pay off big, I don't know that I'll be able to stop her. She got wind of this mage, that could be beneficial in her evil plans. Plans that she isn't even telling me about. All I know is that it has something do do with Sonoura...
TAKING OVER THE GALAXY!!! MOOHOOHOOHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!
I couldn't enjoy playing on with my old lizard knowing that I want to do this. So I started my new character!
Name: Delekhan
Race: Khajiit
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Smuggler/Thief/Killer - everything to make some money, no questions asked!
Difficulty: Master
Some basic rules: Of course dead is dead, no fasttravel. I try to eat and sleep, but well, it's not binding for me.
Background:
Delekhan is a Khajiit who grew up in a rich merchant’s family. However, his father became too powerful for some people, so his family was killed in an “accident”. The whole mansion of the family burned to the ground. Nobody came out alive. This evening, Delekhan hat an argument with his father, so he was in the tavern, drinking to forget his anger so he was the only one spared by the flames.
Having lost all of his family, his life changed dramatically. The enemies of his father were so powerful, the family name was buried together with everything else concerning the merchant so he had to hide and did have no access to any of the family’s wealth, which was taken away anyways.
Being robbed of everything he ever loved, Delekhan didn’t know what to do. He tried to make some money on the street, just to get barely enough to still his hunger, never enough to make himself a living. One day he met some smugglers. It seemed good and more importantly fast money and he recognized that he seemed to have talents that were very suitable for this kind of work. Due to his former education he could speak very well. He also got some knife training for self defense back when he was a teenager. It didn’t take long for him to grow to a known figure in this business. This of course brought him some unwanted attention from the authorities. During some bigger shipment of moonsugar, he was trapped by the cityguards and managed barely to escape. So he lost everything again! But he did not give up. Since his new name was well known in his home country, he could not start anew here, so he took the money he saved in his secret stash for situations like this and went off to the north in the hope of a new start.
An old friend told him that Skyrim is a fast expanding market for moonsugar and Skooma.
Unfortunately, the Imperium does not like some cat selling drugs to its citizens, and while trying to cross the border he walked into an ambush that originally was not made for him…and that’s where the story starts.
Question: Is there a point where like,
"Congratulations, you win!"
I mean is there an end goal in Skyrim to accomplish as your DID character? Since Skyrim is a never ending game, is it just a matter of go until you meet your inevitable death? Or did I miss an instruction post about like a Hall of Fame where characters who do survive till the end become immortalized? Perhaps beating the main quest without dying is the goal, or...?
Joining in. :cool:
Anja ("Ahn-yah")
Female Nord
Pure mage
25 years old
Anja was born on the road, somewhere in Skyrim. Shortly after her birth in 4E176, Anja's family traveled south into Cyrodiil to join the reconstruction efforts that followed the Great War with the Thalmor. (Anja's mother, a pious woman, insisted this was Mara's will.) So Anja grew up in the heart of Tamriel, working alongside her mother in the service of the poor, and working in her father's bookstore, built ten years after their arrival in Cyrodiil. This was a happy life for Anya, who was content with serving her parents and learning about the world through her father's books. But in 4E199, the 23-year-old Nord began to have dreams of her snowy homeland, increasing in frequency and vividness as the months passed. By the year 201, Anja's mother had conviced her husband to let their daughter journey to Skyrim, believing her years of dreaming to be of divine origin. And so, accompanied by a family friend, Anja rode north to Skyrim, where her true life would begin.
Welcome aboard the DID train. Good luck with your char.
DID is not for everyone. It forces you into a type of playstyle that is not common among some. I commend you on your effort. The main thing is that you enjoy the game. That will trump DID any day of the week. At least you tested the waters.
I couldn't enjoy playing on with my old lizard with knowing that I want to do this.
Kick ass! :toughninja:
Question: Is there a point where like,"Congratulations, you win!"I mean is there an end goal in Skyrim to accomplish as your DID character?
There is a Hall of Fame, in the FONV thread. That may be what you read. I think Gunny threw that in to encourage people to accept the challenge. I briefly entertained the idea about incorporating it into the Oblivion thread, but that thread was just started on a whim. A whim, played off of and inspired by the guys at the FONV forum. I don't look at it as a 'Final Goal" type of thing. For me, it's more about 'How you play" and "How it makes you feel".
Don't get me wrong. Completing a questline, is a very noble accomplishment, indeed. It doesn't even have to be the MQ. FONV had an end and had challenging DLC content added. Most people were mainly playing the DLCs anyway. So, with FONV having an actual ending, and the extra content, it was easily viable to set up an end challenge.
You're right. Skyrim doesn't have an ending per say. I guess you could look at the MQ as such, and some simply start new characters, at that point. Then again there are others that play for months on end and never take on the MQ.
Acadian has a cahracter in Oblivion, named Buffy the Bowgirl, with almost 800 hrs logged without the MQ. That's not playing a committed DID character, but Buffy has never fell in battle. That is quite the accomplishment.
So I am curious. What do you do when you meet a Frost Troll and you are only a level 6? I tried several times to kill one at this level but just plain ran out of inventory and magic.
Well, that's how my first character died. :P
But my second character was pretty much the same build, except heavy armor instead of light, and the same level the next time and I succeeded.
Really you can replace "frost troll" with any enemy, and it all comes down to planning. So for me that means carrying a minimum supply of potions. So if I get low, I know better than to press on in a dungeon or uncharted territory or I'm just asking for trouble. In fact, that's exactly why I died the first time to that frost troll. I was low on potions, but I thought I wouldn't encounter anything worse than wolves on my way up to High Hrothgar. It goes to show that you can never get too comfortable, which is the whole point of DID for me.
I'm glad to report that despite that misstep, my second character Nero (Redguard) is progressing very nicely. Ronan made me feel like light armor wouldn't be enough for a pure warrior type, so I ditched any inclination to sneak and focused on heavy armor. I realize now I would be fine with light, I would just have gone through maybe 1.5x to 2x the potions. Because I'm still focusing on two-handed skill, Nero is a beast when it comes to dealing damage.
I've even been taking a few risks and stepping out of my comfort zone a bit. Nothing too drastic. Nero now has three dragon souls under his belt. All in all, I feel I'm doing pretty well and unless I get impatient again, I think this DID run will not be so hard as I had originally predicted. I'm also doing some light RP and setting some restrictions, like no lockpicking or using any magic whatsoever (including the freebie spells everyone starts with), and no poisons because he's a Redguard who shuns anything but direct, physical combat to fight his battles (along with dragon shouts because he is dragonborn and I could not possibly avoid the temptation to abuse shouts as much as I do now, I love 'em!)
But now the problem is I'm getting antsy to try something new. :P
I may start another character or two concurrently. I really want to do pure mage, because I've never done that before in any game. I also still want to go the stealth route, possibly an assassin. I love stealth in games when it's done properly, but I've never been a big fan of how stealth is done in Bethesda games (one thread I read a few hours ago about enemies giving up a search after being shot up several times is one major reason why...) Still, the perks for sneak and pickpocketing look really nifty, so that's a plus!
RIP Ronsvik Red-Beard
Died level 10 from a fireball out of nowhere launched from a hagraven.
Really disappointed because I spent so much time creating his backstory.
Anyway make way for ivreath orethi
Dark elf who is very aragont, likes to travel alone. Doesn't like to be told what to do. Not evil, just an arsehole. Just in it for the money at the end of the day.
Spellsword, an all rounder really.
Main skills: destruction, conjuration, one hand, light armour. He's also going to make all his own weapons and enchantments
Today i died. I was level 19 when a level scaling of boses finally caught me. I was killing bandits in a fort in one hit with my greatsword, laughing as they were no match for me, when the chief of bandits just cut my head of in three hits. The sudden change in difficuillty supprised me, and i didnt noticed my health was going down so fast. I had a adventure of my life with this character, exploring beautifull world and figting evil monsterrs. This game seems like it has been build for DID, just needs some mods to tweek leveling.
Lets drink to the memory of Wiliam, level 19 male, true nord of heart, slayer of a tree dragons, giant frost spider, hagraven and some imperials and thalmors, and to the memory of a true friend Faendal who sacificed his live, savind Wiliam from icewright.
Progress:
Spoiler
Anja has defeated her first dragon and has discovered that she is Dragonborn. (All of this is overwhelming in itself, so she's keeping her head by focusing on the affairs of the present moment, such as the purchasing of a home in Whiterun and learning the duties of a Thane.) She hired the Dunmer Jenassa on her first visit to Whiterun, knowing that if she was to meet the demands being placed on her, she would benefit from the company of someone stronger and more experienced. Though initially startled by Jenassa's lust for battle, Anja hopes to be a humanizing influence on her newfound friend.
