Just beat this last night. I was pleasantly suprised, actually - it was quite addictive. There's a real elegance in the game design, this time around. Literally everything in the game serves a gameplay function - from the crowds on the street, down to Ezio's costume. I also liked the slightly more open experience, this time around - it didn't come off feeling as repetitive as AC1.
That said, I did kind of miss the preparation missions from the first game. I think it might have been nice to have some optional side missions for the big assassinations to help you prepare and plan for them (like they had in the first game.) Also, being able to improve your Villa was a nice touch - but it didn't really take me very long at all to get everything there maxed out. For most of the game I felt a bit guilty going back to the Villa and passing by my architect, who no longer had anything to do. It was a nice feature, but I just wish it could have been fleshed out a little bit more.
I've also decided not to bother with trying to find all 100 feathers. I just looked online to see if it was worth the time, and the reward for all that work isn't something I'm interesting in enough to go through all of that bother. There's already a whole ton of collecting and finding things in the game - I think I'd rather have seen you get some more partial rewards for making progress towards that 100 feathers, rather than only giving you something at 50 and 100.
And I'm still not a big fan of Desmond. That's kind of a hard thing they're trying to do - it's really hard to care very much about a character that you almost never have anything to do with. At least in the first one, they'd pop you out of the Animus on occasion, to remind you that it's really Desmond's story, after all. This time around, there's only like a small handful of scenes that deal with him, at all. Kind of led to a slightly dissapointing ending - by then, I was really attached to Ezio and his story - it would have been nice to see what happened to him after all of that - instead he's just kind of left in the dust.
Overall, though, I was really impressed. I was totally hooked on the game, and I'll probably do another runthrough fairly soon - the plot is rather twisty and complex, and a second run ought to help me clear up just what was going on at times.
