I don't think people are giving Bethesda enough credit

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 4:06 am

Being invalidated when giving concerns ;p

Perhaps it has more to do with the same "concerns" being repeated again and again by the same people in ... often ... a somewhat less than constructive tone?

I can understand this from folks like the PSP3 players ... I'd be a bit pissed myself if I'd encountered the issues that some of them have mentioned.

But, I've seen more than a few people come on the board to discuss different areas of the game that could be improved ... if not for Skyrim then maybe for TES VI ... and they aren't usually attacked or had their opinion "invalidated".

And why would they ... most times they're discussing issues that many other players have also noticed.

But then there are those who seem to pop up and yap on at every opportunity with exactly the same "criticism" they've made dozens ... or hundreds ... of times before. And often not in an overly constructive way or in threads where others members might see their "critique" as particularly relevant to the thread topic.

And when these come across more as a "they didn't make the game the way I thought they should" whine than a "here's something I think could be improved" issue ... that most forum members either agree with or can at least see as a valid concern ... it can get "irritating".

Particularly when these are often just a matter of personal opinion ... rather than the "this is an indisputable fact" tone some use to express themselves ... or come across as having more to do with the "critic's" own issues, whatever those might be, than what most might see as a serious game related issue.

no cookie from me. imo its better in some areas, but on the whole they diluted the content in favor of glamor. having to wait 4-5 months for it to stop crippling my system does not earn much praise.

if this were my first TES/FO title then I would probably also be amazed, but its not.

this game can't hold a candle to FONV's faction+karma system. Nor can it compare to the uniqueness of the FO3/MW worlds.

Hell, for the most part NPC interactions were often better implemented in OB.

The guild quests in Skyrim are without question the weakest we have ever seen from Bethesda.

but by all means keep heaping the praise on them, then these symptoms will surely be exacerbated for the next release.

You don't get to decide that for anyone but yourself. I see no reason for such defensive posturing, if the game is made better by Bethesda taking to heart criticism from players, the game is improved for everyone, you included.

I don't think I was speaking for anyone but myself, but I certainly don't appreciate when people insinuate that I am blindly ignoring flaws because I don't complain about the game, when I don't find any flaws in the game to complain about.

When it's the same people giving the same concerns for the millionth time? there is a VERY fine line between expressing concern and griping on the same topic endlessly, without saying anything that you haven't said before.
And quite often, the exact opposite happens-people who are happy with those same issues are the "Beth Defense Force", "Casuals", "Console Kiddies" etc. So your point isn't exclusive to one group or the other

...and herein lies the crux of the matter. Some people will be bothered by some things that others aren't. Everyone is free to have their opinions, but the key to how nicely these debates go down is all in the wording

"bethesda, this is terrible" will instantly get on the nerves of those whose opinions differ. No mention of it being someones opinion, no constructiveness in the criticism, and disrespectful to boot.

"My idea for improving xxxx" better

"for me, such and such is terrible" opinionation (is that a word?) is acknowledged

I mean, someone made a thread entitled "major ideas for the next patch - read this Bethesda" and posted a constructive list of what they would like to see, instead of having a moan. They were acknowledged and thanked by Gstaff. Not a huge thing, but how many supposedly constructive topics which contain negative wording have had the same treatment?

A little respect can go a long way.

Good post, However i have noticed that no matter how constructive you are being or no matter how strongly you worded the typical " Don't get me wrong, I love Skyrim" disclaimer at the start of your post you will eventually be branded a "whiner".
All it takes is one poster who is allergic to complaining for the house of cards to collapse or one poster who has called Bethesda a complete bunch of [censored]ehawks, Both sides needs to be more tolerant of each-other & respect different opinions.

It's like Godwins law(well, Not really), Although a previous poster did use the phrase "contrarians" then proceeded to backpeddle for the next few posts i imagine that the term will stick, contrarions law is the ultimate way to invalidate en masse anybodies negative opinion about skyrim, A round of applause for that gem.

(Nice job MetalGod, Yet another brush to paint us "whiners" with.)

If people ceased from stomping on the faces of those who raise valid(or not) complaints & held back from replying in those topics i'm positive the complaints threads will be more civil on both sides, As it stands at the moment you need a full set of Kevlar if you want to say anything negative about Skyrim, it's not healthy.

Bethesda deserves praise on 2 platforms, but deserves to take some heat for one. Obviously the game is not perfect on the PC or 360 with bugged quests and the nirnroot glow stacking problem. However for the most part it is a beautiful game that provides hours of fun.

The Playstation version they should have done a much better job. Or perhaps asked 4J Studios to handle the port since they did a good job with Oblivion on the Ps3. Granted 4J was busy with Minecraft on the 360. Bethesda obviously did not care about the quality of the game on the playstation, but they were more than happy to accept the millions they made off that version.

After the amount of revenue Skyrim has generated, rest assured that the banks will give Bethesda enough credit.

I hear everybody talk about what Bethesda could have done better. Which is fine. But I would just like to say THANK YOU! to Bethesda you have made a game that is amazing. Sure it could have been improved in areas but all that aside I appreciate the work you put into makIng this game.

Not that there aren't already tons of these threads in the forums, but it's much better than constant complaints, especially when such complaints are spammy. I'm sure they appreciate their fanbase :vaultboy:

The problem with that argument though is that it's not exactly Bethesda's fault.

People in the industry, outside of Bethesda, who have designed games for other games, have talked about how the hardware of the PS3 itself is designed in such a way that a game like Skyrim is going to struggle.

I guess Bethesda could have delayed the PS3 release, or not released it for the PS3 altogether, but I imagine that if that happened, the PS3 crowd would complain just as much, if not more, than they are now with the current issues.

I'm not saying that it was necessarily handled properly, but it's not all Beth's fault on that one either.

Meh, its just the contrarian effect. Essentially, when people see something that is commercially and critically successful, they seem to want to do nothing but point out its flaws, when they are too blind to see all the good qualities of the product. I don't know why this is true, my guess is that it makes themselves feel smart. This is why I don't trust the user reviews on Metacritic, it just seems inversly porportional to how many copies the game sold, rather than the quality of the game.

Hmm, interesting. Is this related at all to the hipster effect?

Indeed it is the antithetical effect of hipsterism.

I think some people just need to learn to say "Fine, doesn't bother me but it bothers you. Lets beg to differ". The thing is though, I have noticed a more positive vibe on threads which dont appear to be a moany diatribe etc etc.

But hey, this is the internet. I save that kevlar for every time I point out that my immersion in Morrowind was broken by the "swoosh swoosh clunk swoosh" combat... *dons kevlar, sits down and waits*

It's not necessary, and wasn't then. The first thing you have to do is not post "zomg skyrim ruin tes 4evah", and instead post "For me, persoanlly, the design of Skyrim has taken it from my most anticipated game of 2011 to a spot collecting dust on my shelf. Here are the specific decisions and why they have impacted the experience." The second thing you need to do is accept the fact that while you may loathe a feature/option/decision, someone else is equally adoring of it, and will react as passionately. The third thing you have to do is learn when it's best to just disengage from a conversation because the other person has no interest in anything but "winning" or "being right". The fourth thing? don't be that person.

Four simple steps to criticize Skyrim vocally without asbestos underwear. Works for me all of the time. Of course, I can't exactly post impulsively, either. Too far removed from the disappointment to recall it all in a snap.

Yep. Skyrim is apparently perfection. If anyone makes a complaint they get called a 'moaner' or that there complaint is unfounded as he isn't bothered by it.
I know, look at the post above he responded to me. Lol

When I find fault with the game, I will express it.

That time has not come. I'm not going to complain about something for the sake of complaining about it, when there is nothing in the game worth me complaining about.
For you Skyrim is gaming nirvana.

I am not complaining for the sake of complaining on these forums I am stating what I have issues with.lol at your last part, there is plenty to complain about, if not anything else bugs and game breaking bugs.

Absolutely!

Good story and interesting quests are essential for these kind of games.

This should be criticized a lot. And Bethesda should be aware of this.

The simple thing would have been not to release it on the ps3 then. Of course people would have been upset but Bethesda could have been honest and said that they did not feel the system could handle it. However, they would have lost millions had they done that.

Also, the game has improved with patches on the ps3. Obviously they were capable of making the game more stable, but decided to release it with many problems and hope to fix it later.

This is not the first game they have released on the ps3. Before release Bethesda claimed Skyrim on the PS3 was getting a ton of attention and had reached a good place of parity with the 360. Obviously that was not the case.

I love skyrim and think beth did a good job but fell just short of greatness in this game and i think time constraints for a fancy release date played a part in this.

Skyrim is the best game out now and just as i did with OB, i play skyrim almost daily, faults and all...me and TES have a love hate relationship, i love and hate it equally :)

Can you imagine the bile if they did that? If anything they should have delayed the PS3 release, and explained why. Still, there would have been a tidal wave of negativity. Kind of a rock and a hard place on this one.

A Situation they helped create since they decided it had to be released on 11/11/11. Many times companies delay games.
